3. Classification of PUMPs
Positive displacement
Here energy conversion (SP -> WP) is done by actually
displacing the fluid by rotor or piston
e.g. Reciprocating pump , Gear pump, Vane pump
Rotodynamic pump
Here energy conversion (SP -> WP) is by rotodynamic
action of rotor
e.g. Centrifugal pump, axial flow pump ,mixed flow pump

5. CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
It converts mechanical energy into hydraulic
energy (pressure energy) by virtue of centrifugal
force
Flow is in radial outward direction
As water moves outward from center of impeller
centrifugal head on water is increases

7. IMPELLER
The impeller is the main rotating part that provides the centrifugal
acceleration (& hence force) to the fluid.

8. Casing:
The main purpose of casing is to convert kinetic energy into
pressure energy. Casings are generally of three types:
a) Volute : Used for higher head, eddy currents formed
b) Vortex : [with vortex chamber ]Eddy currents are
reduced.
c) Vortex chamber with guide blades or diffuser ring
d) Circular : Used for lower head.

10. HOW IT WORKS??
1. When motor switch ON, impeller
starts rotating,
2. due to centrifugal effect water
available at eye of impeller moves
outwards & vacuum is created at
eye of impeller which is filled by
fresh water from suction pipe
3. Vanes gives kinetic energy to
water
Volute casing reduces velocity and
converts into pressure energy
