Understanding by Design is a framework for curriculum design that is oriented toward developing student understanding and focuses on "Big Ideas" in content areas. It has the potential to help educators unpack standards and help students develop deep conceptual understanding. However, challenges include giving educators time to implement it and making it a long-term initiative that involves all stakeholders. Moving forward, it could be improved by addressing differentiation for both high-ability and special needs learners to ensure high-quality learning for all students.

Online learning provides students unique learning experiences tailored to their individual needs and learning styles. It allows for meaningful collaboration between students and engagement with real-world problems. Forty-four states now offer some level of online or supplemental online learning programs for K-12 students to use for enrichment, remediation, or distance education. Online learning environments encourage the development of 21st century skills like problem solving, communication, and information literacy that are essential for students' future success.
Presentation Nabushawo Harriet Mutambo to EADTU conference OOFHEC2017
(1) This study examined how the Makerere University eLearning Environment (MUELE) can be used to improve interaction among distance learners through an activity theory approach.
(2) The researchers found that MUELE has the potential to enhance interaction through its affordances like media, navigation, and accessibility features. However, tensions emerged within the activity system including a mismatch between instructors' constructivist approach and MUELE's social constructivist design, heavy workload for online facilitation, and lack of clear online policies.

The Tools of Engagement Project (TOEP): On-demand Discovery Learning Professional Development, a SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grant (IITG), will be highlighted. TOEP provides a convenient, focused venue to experiment with social media and the latest web-based instructional technology tools. This presentation will feature the project implementation, which is currently running Phase 3, and will discuss TOEP’s potential to become a sustainable SUNY-wide resource.
The project’s overarching goal is for faculty and staff to become more adept in embedding relevant technology tools in their instruction. Self-directed activities encourage familiarity with freely available online instructional technology tools. The TOEP website systematically introduces the rationale for tool use, and then skillfully navigates users through discovery experiences to build skills in using relevant tools. Faculty are also encouraged to network and share ideas with faculty at other SUNY campuses through the TOEP Google+ Community.
TOEP Fellows were recruited from partnering campus to “spread the word” and provide mentoring and support for the growing participant pool. Fellows will be on-hand to share success stories, challenges and lessons learned. A selection of faculty will also be available to share their experiences as participants and awardees. They will discuss how they engaged with the project and strategies they acquired that have influenced their current teaching strategies.

This paper builds on research directions from ‘activity theory’ and ‘learning design’ to provide ‘facilitation’ for students standing within decision making related to selection of web 2.0 tools and university provided web-based applications for supporting students activities within problem and project based learning. In the area of problem and project based learning, facilitation is the core term and the teacher often has the role as facilitator or moderator instead of a teacher teaching. Technology adoption for learning activities needs facilitation, which is mostly absent. Sustainable adoption might be facilitated based on tool appropriation with activities associated with courses and projects. Our mapping of different tools in a framework is reported based on interviews, observations, narratives and survey. A direction towards facilitation process for adoption is discussed as part of future scope of work.
