There are two main types of hypertension: primary/essential hypertension which has no clear underlying cause, and secondary hypertension which is caused by an underlying condition affecting the kidneys or endocrine system. Primary hypertension can develop due to several factors including genetics, high salt intake, low physical activity, obesity, insulin resistance, and problems with the renin-angiotensin system or sympathetic nervous system. Causes of secondary hypertension include endocrine conditions like Cushing's syndrome or Conn's syndrome, renal issues such as glomerulonephritis, and other rarer causes.
