Cash transfer programs in Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania led to increases in household productive activities like livestock ownership, crop cultivation, and non-farm businesses. They also increased adults' participation in agricultural work, livestock herding, and non-agricultural businesses. For children, the programs increased participation in some economic activities like agricultural work and livestock herding, but decreased participation in paid work outside the household. The programs did not significantly increase children's involvement in hazardous work or work exceeding international standards on work hours.

There is growing global recognition that violence against women and violence against children, and in particular intimate partner violence against women and violence against children by parents or caregivers, intersect in different ways. As global evidence of and interest in these intersections continue to grow, strategies are needed to enhance collaborations across these fields and thus ensure the best outcomes for both women and children. In response, the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), the UNICEF Innocenti – Global Office of Research and Foresight, and the UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction hosted by WHO’s Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health, partnered to coordinate a global participatory process to identify research priorities that relate to the intersections between violence against children and violence against women.
While priorities are important, the way in which these priorities are determined is also crucial, especially for ownership, contextualization and use. Inclusive, participatory research-setting, such as used in this work, serves to promote a diversity of voices – especially from low- and middle-income countries which have historically lacked representation – and minimize the risk of bias when establishing research priorities.
This report describes the process used to determine the priorities for research on the intersections between violence against children and violence against women, and the top 10 research questions identified.
A partnership with the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to End Child Marriage, UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation and the UNICEF Office of Research - Innocenti, the STAR Initiative (Strategic Technical Assistance for Research) to end harmful practices aims to strengthen evidence generation and learning. The initiative has three areas of focus: evidence generation, evidence synthesis and research dissemination and uptake.

But by nurturing, expanding, and modelling these capacities, children can better understand and interact with the world around them, and realise their unique potential.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.

Cash transfers helped families to
pay for schooling costs:
When a household receives
PSSN funds one of the
conditions is to make sure
that they spend the money in
buying school uniforms,
shoes, pens, exercise books
and other school needs. The
fact that PSSN has taken
care of school requirements
has reduced the burden on
children. Children now get
time to rest and revise what

Conclusions
• Expansion of the household enterprise increased child
engagement in farming, including some forms of harmful
child labor.
• Child engagement in work outside the household mostly
declined.
• School participation improved.
• Beneficiaries do not necessarily perceive child
engagement in economic activities as a negative. It can
also be a source of pride and an opportunity for learning.
• Heterogeneity across countries (context, program design).
• Future research: child time use (sleep, play), learning.

Policy implications
• Closely monitor impacts of cash transfer programs on
child time use, including not only child work but also
school participation, play and sleep.
• In case of impacts on household entrepreneurial activities,
complementary policies should be considered to enhance
positive impacts and limit potentially negative effects on
child labor.
➢ Information campaigns to emphasize the importance of
child schooling.
➢ We would encourage testing the effectiveness of such
interventions alongside cash transfer programs in similar
settings.
