A partnership with the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme to End Child Marriage, UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation and the UNICEF Office of Research - Innocenti, the STAR Initiative (Strategic Technical Assistance for Research) to end harmful practices aims to strengthen evidence generation and learning. The initiative has three areas of focus: evidence generation, evidence synthesis and research dissemination and uptake.

We conduct evidence reviews to
answer critical questions and identify
research gaps.
Ending child marriage and female genital
mutilation (FGM) requires a robust evidence
base to inform programmes and policies that
will improve girls' lives. Through
comprehensive technical research support
and coordination, STAR catalyses efforts to
generate, synthesize, and utilise the highest
quality evidence for action.

There is growing global recognition that violence against women and violence against children, and in particular intimate partner violence against women and violence against children by parents or caregivers, intersect in different ways. As global evidence of and interest in these intersections continue to grow, strategies are needed to enhance collaborations across these fields and thus ensure the best outcomes for both women and children. In response, the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), the UNICEF Innocenti – Global Office of Research and Foresight, and the UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction hosted by WHO’s Department of Sexual and Reproductive Health, partnered to coordinate a global participatory process to identify research priorities that relate to the intersections between violence against children and violence against women. While priorities are important, the way in which these priorities are determined is also crucial, especially for ownership, contextualization and use. Inclusive, participatory research-setting, such as used in this work, serves to promote a diversity of voices – especially from low- and middle-income countries which have historically lacked representation – and minimize the risk of bias when establishing research priorities. This report describes the process used to determine the priorities for research on the intersections between violence against children and violence against women, and the top 10 research questions identified.

An abbreviated version of the Equipping Parents and Health Providers to Address the Psychological and Social Challenges of Caring for Children Living with HIV in Africa report, this technical brief documents promising practices in critical services related to the psychological and social wellbeing of perinatally-infected children in Africa. Interpersonal violence – in all its forms – has a grave effect on children: Violence undermines children’s future potential; damages their physical, psychological and emotional well-being; and in many cases, ends their lives. The report sheds light on the prevalence of different forms of violence against children, with global figures and data from 190 countries. Where relevant, data are disaggregated by age and sex, to provide insights into risk and protective factors. Note: National police statistics for some countries record lower homicide levels than the statistical estimates shown here (which are derived from World Health Organization analyses for the Global Burden of Disease 2010 Study). The Government of Rwanda has advised that they consider the statistical estimates in this table to be too high (official letter). WHO is currently undertaking new analyses for overall homicide death rates for Member States, which will incorporate substantially greater use of national police statistics, and expects to release these at the end of 2014. UNICEF will then update its estimates of homicides of children and adolescents accordingly.

African countries are facing the world’s worst teacher shortage. To shore up the deficit and achieve universal primary education by 2030, 6.1 million primary school teachers need to be hired in Africa alone. As COVID-19 exacerbates pressures placed on education budgets, it is crucial that the deployment of quality teachers in Africa is driven by a quest for equity, effectiveness, and efficiency, since no child should be deprived of learning opportunities because of the school they attend or their area of residence. UNICEF Innocenti is seeking to expand the evidence base on teacher deployment in Africa in order to identify how the deployment of qualified teachers can be optimized to improve equity in learning outcomes. While the equity of primary school teacher deployment is the intended focus of this research, pre-primary teacher deployment will also be analyzed.

Up the Ratios is a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the gap in STEM education for underprivileged students by providing free, high-quality learning opportunities in robotics and other STEM fields. Our mission is to empower the next generation of innovators, thinkers, and problem-solvers by offering a range of educational programs that foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. At Up the Ratios, we believe that every student, regardless of their socio-economic background, should have access to the tools and knowledge needed to succeed in today's technology-driven world. To achieve this, we host a variety of free classes, workshops, summer camps, and live lectures tailored to students from underserved communities. Our programs are designed to be engaging and hands-on, allowing students to explore the exciting world of robotics and STEM through practical, real-world applications. Our free classes cover fundamental concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in these critical areas. Through our interactive workshops, students can dive deeper into specific topics, working on projects that challenge them to apply what they've learned and think creatively. Our summer camps offer an immersive experience where students can collaborate on larger projects, develop their teamwork skills, and gain confidence in their abilities. In addition to our local programs, Up the Ratios is committed to making a global impact. We take donations of new and gently used robotics parts, which we then distribute to students and educational institutions in other countries. These donations help ensure that young learners worldwide have the resources they need to explore and excel in STEM fields. By supporting education in this way, we aim to nurture a global community of future leaders and innovators. Our live lectures feature guest speakers from various STEM disciplines, including engineers, scientists, and industry professionals who share their knowledge and experiences with our students. 1. INFORMATIONAL BRIEF Harmful Practices How can evidence accelerate action to end child marriage and female genital mutilation?

2. We conduct evidence reviews to answer critical questions and identify research gaps. Ending child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM) requires a robust evidence base to inform programmes and policies that will improve girls' lives. Through comprehensive technical research support and coordination, STAR catalyses efforts to generate, synthesize, and utilise the highest quality evidence for action. INFORMATIONAL BRIEF The team We build capacity to support practitioners and policymakers in accessing and using evidence. The STAR team offers in-depth methodological and subject matter expertise to UNICEF and UNFPA regional and country offices supported by the UNICEF-UNFPA Global Programme to End Child Marriage and the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation. Thematic areas include: child marriage, female genital mutilation, adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights, social norms, social protection, gender and child protection.
