The energy industry is rapidly evolving to take advantage of renewable resources and Western Power is embracing new technologies that will improve service and reliability to our customers. New and improving technologies such as solar, wind, wave and most importantly batteries are changing the way we think about the delivery and storage of electricity. One of these developments is the microgrid, which is essentially a small scale power grid that can operate independently (in ‘island mode’) or connect with the main electrical grid – think of a small suburb, or estate, that shares electricity and the cost of the infrastructure. A microgrid needs to control the flow of electricity of low or medium voltage, but does not need connection to a centralised generation or transmission network. Western Power has trialled the world’s first microgrid project that combines wave energy, solar (photovoltaic) energy, a desalination plant, and energy storage that connects to our large electricity network.

Two areas where carbon emissions can be immediately reduced are lighting and water delivery systems. Upgrading to LED lighting can reduce energy usage from lighting by 20% and allow facilities to close coal power plants. Installing turbines in water delivery systems can generate electricity from water flow and pressure, offsetting the large energy usage from pumping and treating water. Several case studies show upgrades to LED lighting and installing turbines in water systems achieved large reductions in energy usage and carbon emissions along with payback periods of 1-2 years.

Low cost, high performance fuel cell energy conditioning system controlled by...TELKOMNIKA JOURNAL
Fuel cells are an important option for the generation of renewable, efficient and environmentally friendly electricity. Although there are commercial applications in the industrial, residential and automotive sectors, it is not yet a mature technology and requires much research, particularly to reduce its costs to a level competitive with other technologies. This research is currently focused not only on the structure of the cell but also on the additional elements and sub systems required for its implementation as an energy solution. In this article, we propose an electrical energy conditioning scheme for the Formic acid fuel cell (direct formic acid fuel cellor DFAFC). This fuel cell was selected for its high performance, and low cost in low and medium power applications. The proposed system consists of a direct current-direct current (DC-DC) regulator supported by a power converter controlled by a Cortex-M3 ARM processor. This CPU is used to propagate a static neural network trained with the non-linear dynamics of the power converter. The power circuit is modeled and simulated to produce the training parameters. The neural network is trained externally and runs off-line on the processor. The results show not only the regulation capacity of the control scheme but also its response speed to sudden changes in the load.

FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS OF A GRID-CONNECTED PV SYSTEM FOR HOME APPLICATIONWayan Santika
The objective of the present study is to provide technical and economical analyses of a grid-connected PV system for a small house located in Bukit Jimbaran, Bali. The peak load of the house during observation was 390 watt and the daily electricity consumption is about 4.7 kWh. HOMER, a renewable energy system software developed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), was utilized for simulation and optimization. The house will be installed with a
grid-connected PV system which includes PV arrays, converters, and batteries (optional). The investment cost of the PV arrays is 3000 USD/kW and their lifetime, derating factor, and ground reflectance are 20 years, 90%, and 20%, respectively. The PV sizes to consider are 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 kilowatts. The grid applies a flat rate of about 0.1 USD/kWh.
The surplus energy of the PV system will be fed into the grid with a net metering system in which the meter run backward
when the excess energy is being fed into the grid. However, the sellback price is zero if energy sales exceed purchases. The converter costs 1000 USD per kilowatt. The economic inputs required by HOMER are the annual real interest rate and the lifetime of the project, which are 7% and 20 years, respectively. Results show that the proposed grid-connected PV system is technically viable. However, the grid-only system is still the most cost effective choice based on the net present cost (NPC) with the current price of 0.1 USD per kWh. The cheapest choice for the grid-connected PV system is when the PV and converter sizes are both 0.5 kW. The NPC of the PV system is 3,823 USD and its related cost of electricity (COE) is
0.209 USD/kWh. The renewable fraction of the system is 38%. Sensitivity analysis were also conducted with some scenarios such as reduction in PV prices, electricity price increases, and CO2 penalties.

The document discusses renewable energy sources and power infrastructure for the Hawaiian islands. It finds that Oahu can meet its 40% renewable portfolio standard goal by 2030 using wind, solar and biofuels without needing an undersea cable from Maui. Currently, sufficient renewable resources cannot be accessed from other islands in a cost effective way. However, an inter-island cable could become feasible in the future if key assumptions change. The document also outlines renewable potential and development plans for smart grids on the various Hawaiian islands.
This document summarizes the status of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) applications in Malaysia. It discusses that between 1998-2002, Malaysia successfully completed several pilot BIPV projects totaling over 400kWp installed across various buildings. Key lessons learned included addressing issues like roof leakage and lightning protection that are prevalent in the tropical climate. While BIPV system costs in Malaysia have decreased significantly, costs remain relatively high compared to other countries due to components still being imported and lack of local market. The government is now working to further develop BIPV through new programs and a national steering committee on renewable technologies.
This document summarizes information on solar power plant costs in India and Germany. It discusses how solar power plants are necessary in remote areas of India to improve standards of living by providing electricity. A comprehensive study on battery energy storage systems for renewable energyIRJET Journal
The document discusses battery energy storage systems for renewable energy. It begins by noting the increasing global demand for energy and dependence on fossil fuels, which are limited and cause pollution. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind can help generate clean electricity but storing this energy for later use poses a challenge. Battery storage systems can address this by storing renewable energy for applications like electric vehicles and the grid. The document then examines different types of battery energy storage technologies, classifications of electric energy storage systems, and the use of batteries specifically for renewable energy storage and electric vehicles.
The document discusses the development of smart grids and micro-grids as electrical networks expand across time zones and climate zones. Renewable energy sources like solar and wind have introduced instability that requires electrical grids to function differently, termed "smart grids." Micro-grids are defined as handling under 50MW of power within a community and are interconnected with the smart grid. The document proposes several micro-grid projects including bidirectional control centers between battery storage and solar farms, battery storage for night lighting powered by solar panels, increasing solar panel efficiency, and using excess heat from solar panels for HVAC. ATMs are mission critical machines for financial institutions and convenient online banking sources for the
customer. Ensuring that the ATM is online 24/7 is a crucial for the banks. The probability of downtime of the
ATM at night is greater as compared to day time because of uncertainty of efficient load conversion. A
generator is required not only for smoother functioning of the ATM but also for the avoidance of downtime.
Moreover, a generator of 40 KVA at the Bank Alfalah Fortress branch and 100 KVA at Baghbanpura branch will
run the whole branch during the day serving the load of 50KW and 55.4KW respectively for the branches and

branch operational hours. Post installation, the generator's operational hours and fuel consumption reduced
tremendously.
The installation of the solar plant freed Bank Alfalah from the hassle of appointing a human resource to ensure
the ATM link remains online during the night and the generator is running effectively to run the ATM during

This initiative by Bank Alfalah and UBL will largely gain on brand equity for adapting to green
solutions. They have gained recognition at a national level through press for its green initiative and
paving way towards the direction of becoming the environment-friendly bank in the financial
services industry and setting a successful example for other financial institutions. Following their

“We have found a way to make running ATMs increasingly cost-efficient and energy efficient for
UBL, and we hope to be able to do the same for many others in the future. The smallest things make
the biggest differences and the conversion of ATMs across the country to solar power will generate
