makes them appreciate the handwork they completed to get accepted into the school, but also how to

persuasive because Bagchi was an alumni of the school that he wrote to which gives him credibility,
he used humor to grab the reader s attention and he stated facts about the school, which attracts the
audience s sense of logic. The author was inspired to write this essay because he experienced college
the same way all freshmen will experience college. He went through the same exact struggles that they
are bound to go through at some point in it, so he was motivated to help them survive school and stick
with it no matter how tough it gets. He consistently emphasizes how magnificent the rewards are if
one finishes all of college. One of the reasons this essay is rhetorically persuasive is because of his use
of ethos. Bagchi attended UC Berkeley to study Finance and Public Policy which increases his
credibility because he knows exactly how the freshman class feels and what they are going through.
Consequently, advice from someone who has gone through the exact same thing is a lot easier to take
in. It is hard to tell students how to succeed in school if the adviser did not go through the exact same
thing. For example, if someone tries to give a friend advice on how to deal with a breakup and that
person has never been through one, chances are that it would not be that profitable advice because
they do not know how it feels to go through a heartbreak therefore they cannot relate to them.
Credibility is important when writing an essay, but so is grabbing the readers attention. Bagchi uses
many examples of pathos throughout the essay to appeal to the reader s emotions. For instance, he
incorporates humor by advising the students to ignore the Instagram alerts of kids postponing higher

When I first entered college, I had thought that I wanted to major in Biomedical Sciences. The reason

Throughout the book I recognized the character s transition to how the house was built. Navidson
tended to become more brave and willing to take risks, however Karen was frightened through the

When I first saw the title and abstract to the articles required for this class, I read with disbelief the
idea that anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN) can be seen as having positive effects on an
individual. To me, this was a foreign concept and had never crossed my mind. The exploratory studies
required 18 (AN) and 30 (BN) participants who have been diagnosed with AN or BN to write two
letters; one to their disorder as a friend and the other as a foe. From these letters, the researchers
analyzed and coded certain phrases and then divided these into pros and cons. While I believe this
study contains many flaws, it is interesting to see how they can describe both the positive and negative
aspect of their disorder. After reading through the articles, I began to understand the perception of
control and power that these participants may feel. While it may be maladaptive behaviors, as an
individual with a mental disorder, they believe that they are gaining something distinct from their
behavior whether it be the feelings of superiority of succeeding in losing weight where others have

many forms, and its consequences have proven dire several times. The definition of racism varies
depending on the dictionary, but the common theme throughout all definitions is one of intolerance or

to classify humans based on their behavior, mannerisms, social ideals, ethnicity, age, faith, skin color,
