The hot sun beamed off Remi s body as sweat ran down her skin like rain drops.
Today was the official beginning of fall and the sun has yet to show mercy on any
soul living. And to make matters even worse the A/C unit was out of order which
meant every one in Lakeview Apartment would have to suffer from the unbaring heat.
Sitting on the stoop of her apartment Remi watched as cars drove past her with
their windows rolled up as she sucked on her fifth pop cycle of the day. Her milk
chocolate skin was hidden underneath an all white Nike viser with he box braids
sitting in a high pony tail. The pink tank top she wore was slightly wet from all the
sweating she was doing while her blue denim shorts stuck to her body like glue.

Going inside of the bathroom Remi stepped in the shower letting the hot warm

her favorite song her mother used to sing to her before she died.
Its been seventeen years since her death and although she never got to meet her

3. Scientific Management (850 Words)
It could be said that Fredrick Winslow Taylor s scientific management theory is still
significantly relevant to management practices the 21st century. By analysing both
critics and advocates of Taylor s theory, we are able to gain a comprehensive insight
into Taylor s contribution to the improved productivity, higher efficiency and greater
consistency in the current business world. In conjunction with this, suggestions have
been made that scientific managementexercises poor working conditions,

Taylor s theory.
Today, there is increasing evidence of scientific management becoming dated as we
become more focused on incorporating ideologies of modern management
approaches. Chowdhury claims that, There is much truth in the saying that every
living practitioner is prisoner to the ideas of a dead theorist. (2000, pp. 21). It is

one of the reasons for this different perspective as seen in this century is discussed by
Grint, Management theory, especially American management theory, has generally
been construed to represent this rational development towards a more effective
system over time. (1997, pp. 48). Due to gradual changes in management practices, it
is evident that Taylor s theory is arguably becoming less significant.
By examining Taylor s theory and its impact on business management practices today,
it is evident that there are still supporters as well as increasing critics of his concept.
Whilst there are indications of successful implementation of his practices in
businesses today, there are also many negative facets of his theory regarding its
impact on the employee. This research suggests that although scientific

Many criminal justice professions require candidates to possess strong oral and
written communication skills. The essence of communication is the conveyance of a
message from sender to receiver. Often times you will find that there is interference
that may hinder your communication with the receiver. In the communication
process, the parties involved engage in certain unconscious behaviors that direct the
flow of communication. There is a step by step process that can be broken down
into a communication model. The process begins with the sender. The sender of the
message is the party who had an original idea to pass along. The sender breaks down
the message into concepts that can be accepted by the receiver. Between the sender

The persuading style of communication involves information sharing and acceptance
techniques. Interviewing is an example of the persuading style. It is really a matter
of a police officer is attempting to persuade someone to reveal information that may
be against his or her best interests in a court of law. The problem solving style of
communication is a very beneficial and productive method. Police officers attend
crime watch meetings and community awareness meetings in an effort to resolve not
only the problems with crime but also with situations that foster an atmosphere for
criminal acts to occur (COMMUNICATION: WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH,
Chapter 1pg 7). The benefits of using different communication styles are the different
responses that you get from each one. I believe that persuading style is one of the
most effective because interrogation officers often get a witness to admits something
that they never saw and get the accused to admit a crime that they may have not ever
committed. One problem with the persuasive style of communication is that it is not
always productive. Communication exists on two levels: verbal and nonverbal. The
importance of communication styles in Law Enforcement Verbal communication is
not only comprised of the spoken word but of the written word as well. Reports,
memoranda, and directives are all vital to the transmittal of information within a law
enforcement agency. Verbal communication is very important due to the many reports

describe mindfulness, as a way of life that is peacefully perceptive, deprived of the

technique a fragment of myself is allowed to observe unrestricted by my thought

My new body of work is a continuation of the work I have initiated earlier this year. It
consists of a series of large canvases where I am painting a distorted enlarged self. I
paint with oil colors on Italian linen canvases. This paint layer gets built up in a
traditional lean to fat technique. I used to paint women portraits, but I gradually

understanding about how the body alone is a vehicle to convey emotions and how

The dichotomy exists throughout the article, which were the benefits vs. the threat of

An Author s Credibility In The Academic Discourse Community
The academic discourse community has certain expectations about an argument
which make the work convincing and credible to members of the community. Before
the work is even considered however, the community has expectations of the author.
The author must fulfill these expectations in order to be considered credible or
convincing. Some general criteria for an author in the academic discourse community
include having a voice in the work, credentials and experience that make him or her
qualified to write on the subject, a sense of professionalism about them shown in the
tone and diction of the work, and a balanced view of all sides of the issue. In the case

The delayed and half hearted attempt at a thesis is not a good feature of an
argument according to the academic discourse community. The second error that
Cave makes is that he looses his voice in the paper as a whole. Short though it is,
Cave still manages to stuff no less than eleven sources in his article. While a wide
variety and scope of outside sources in not intrinsically bad, on the contrary it
usually is desirable, summarizing the sources rather than having them back up his
own ideas is where Cave goes wrong. There are 21 paragraphs total in Cave s
article, only 5 of which contain his own voice. At a scanty 24% appearance rate,
the academic discourse community would be sure to note the lack of the author s
voice. Both the tardy, weak thesis and the overkill of sources as compared to Cave s
own voice make the reader question his credibility as an author.
A strong voice of the author is present in John E. Calfee s article entitled How
Advertising Informs to Our Benefit . First, Calfee has a clear and strong thesis that
appears early in the article. His statement, ...the truth is that people find advertising
very useful indeed shows the clear position that he has take and appears in the very
first paragraph of the article. This early evidence of voice reassures the reader that
the author is confident and knows what he is talking about. He goes on throughout
10. The Gritty World Of Crime Fiction
In the gritty world of crime fiction, a detective must be prepared to face any
number of gruesome and impossible challenges that come with living in the
traditional urban landscape. One of the most difficult challenges is the detective s
never ending fight to keep control in a chaotic society, and a serious threat to that
authority is the ever dangerous temptation of the women in his life. Crime fiction
uses a division of female sexuality to take power from the women of the novel and
give it to the men of society. Women in crime fiction novels are commonly depicted
as either sinners or saints in crime fiction. Although crime fiction is is good at
provoking thought about moral grey areas, the same treatment is not extended toward
the females in the genre. In the mind of both the authors and readers, there is a black
and white view of women and how they should represent their sexuality. The first
archetypal womanthat most associate with this genre is the femme fatale, a woman
who, according to Hard Boiled Ideology, is an aggressive, sexually avaricious, and
dangerous and are perceived at first ... to be highly desirable, and are later
discovered to be perverted and immoral (Ogdon). An example of this can be found in
Dashiell Hammetts The Maltese Falcon, with Sam Spade s love interest, Brigid.
When Spade first meets Brigid, he notices how she approaches his office with
tentative steps and her timid smile and uneasy eyes (Hammett 4). In this first

depending on which you choose it can drastically change the way you perceive life
as a whole. Each person, as an individual, has their own choiceon how they view their
personal life; however, they should know the differences between the two. How most

Despite the fact that communication is very much a part of our everyday lives, it is
not always easy. For a number of reasons young people, mostly teenagers, can
experience challenges in their communication with peers, parents, teachers and other
important people in their lives. Sometimes, just talking through communication
problems is very valuable and can benefit you in determining how to make some
positive changes. At other times, you might need to do some work on altering the
way you communicate by determining different ways to give messages to others,
whether it is face to face, on the phone, through email, or by text. The goal of this
literature review is to examine collected works to provide an overview of
communication, including communication styles, types and skills. As well to discuss
possible applications of communication as it relates to adolescent development, social
skills temperament, and adolescent leadership.

DNApolymerase. One of the main functions for DNA polymerase is to allow the

caused by a genetic mutation that occurs before the transcription and replication

capitalizing on the current sentiments and issues. By typifying Fagin as the absolute

Exploiting society s negative attitude towards the Jewish community, Dickens creates
a realistic and recognizable character the Jew with an inner life that motivates and
complicates about crime and profit. The inherent bad guy, Fagin refutes the popular
idea that being a crook is romantic, exemplifying a dirtied, unromantic miserable
reality (34) of London s hell.
The satanic symbolism associated with Fagin relates all Jews with evil and
decadence, promoting contemporary anti Semitism. Introduced as an old shriveled
Jew (105) with a toasting fork in hand, Fagin is a blatant representation of the
respectable old gentleman (104) Lucifer. In the figure of the crafty old Jew, Fagin
demonstrates Jewish villainy s role in offering innocent minds to a corrupt world,
encouraging others to thieve (488). As Oliver Twist complicates and matures, the
Jewish caricature becomes increasingly unsympathetic and manipulative, leading
society to fear and despise his type. When eventually arrested for his role in Nancy s
murder, society congregates in a judicial zoo to observe the caged animal the Jew and
criticize his immorality.
Though the reader may initially have been inclined to sympathize with the old Jew s
predicament, Dickens s bias exposes readers to Fagin s deception. Strengthening the
anti Semitic atmosphere is Dickens s deliberate decision to dehumanize; he
repeatedly uses an

The tragedy of commons is a term originally used by Garrett Hardin, and occurs
when individuals neglect the well being of society in the pursuit of personal gain.
Easter Island is a result of the tragedy of commons by all of the deforestation. In
result of the most extreme deforestation in the Pacific, the community that lived
there had to search for further food. Because of all of the deforestation most of the
species living in the trees became extinct there as well. Garbage heaps show that
seabirds and shellfish declined over time, and the six species of land birds, including
two rails, two parrots, a heron, and a barn owl, went extinct. Says Peter Tyson. Also
according to his article, the only animal that was still around
24. A Clean Well-Lighted Place
When one thinks of time, they mainly think about what they will be receiving once
the designated time falls. A minute can last what feels like a lifetime to some, but to
others it can feel like seconds. How a person feels about life can determine how they
spend it and feel about others. This is showed in Ernest Hemingways A Clean, Well
Lighted Place. In the story, an old, deaf man is observed by two waiters, one
young and one old. The young waiter is in a rush to get home to his wife, while the
other just wants to let the old man drink in peace. They talk about the old man, how
he is getting drunk and attempted to kill himself a week prior. The young waiter
would say how he wished the attempted suicidewould have worked so that he could...

After the old, deaf man went home the two waiters began to talk. The older waiter
explained to the young one how it was he who lacked all the things young people
had, such as confidence, joy, and youth. The older waiter then explained, I am of
those who like to stay late at the cafe. With all those who do not want to go to bed.
With all those who need a light for the night. This shows how the cafe was
symbolic to the lonely, to the ones who need a well lit cafe to soothe their
loneliness, to stay up late and sleep in the daylight. While time was determined by
being in a rush or not, loneliness makes time feel a lot longer than to those who are
full of joy. Ernest Hemingway s A Clean, Well Lighted Place explained the reality
of time and how is it thought to be. While to those with lives full of joy, a minute
can feel like a second, but those who are lonely see a minute equivalent to a
lifetime. The young waiter in this story wants to get home to his wife, and pushes a
sad, deaf man out of his pleasant cafe. The older waiter on the other hand felt the
loneliness of the old man, because he too was lonely. So to some, time can be
fulfilled with their everyday lives, but that doesn t mean

Determination of the Hardness Numbers for a Range of Metallic Alloy their
Subsequent Correlation to Mechanical Strength
For the following assignment a laboratory session took place where a hardness test
was conducted on a range of materials named sample A, B and C. The aims of the
experiment are to establish the hardness number for a range of carbon steels using
standard hardness testers in accordance with the relevant British standard, to develop
an understanding of the relationship between the material strength with the said
parameters and to gather the test result and determine whether the materials are either
low carbon steel, medium carbon steel or high carbon steel. A report will be
produced based on the laboratory experiment and the results found.

Background on hardness testing
Hardness is a characteristic of a material and should not be confused as a
fundamental physical property. As stated by the metals handbook hardness is defined
as the resistance of metal to plastic deformation usually done by indenting the
material. It s the ability of the material to stop itself from being permanently
deformed when you apply a load to it,

Comparing The Charge of the Light Brigade and the Defence of Lucknow by A.
Tennyson
Introduction
Both poems The Charge of the Light Brigade and the Defence of Lucknow are
written by Alfred Lord Tennyson. (1809 1892).Both of these poems are related to
two battles in the 19th century, both of these battles concerned the British which
were praised highly in the poems as you will discover later on in my essay. When
writing these poems Tennyson was very proud of the British for their bravery, he
describes this in both the poems The Charge of the Light Brigade and the Defence of
Lucknow .
The Charge of the Light Brigade involved the British, French and the Russians it was

It began on 1st July when 1700 men under the command of Sir Hendry Lawrence,
who was killed at the opening of the siege. On the second day of the siege,
Lawrence was wounded by a bullet which came through the wall of his bedroom.
During the middle of July there were about 10 deaths of the British a day.
I am now going to discover the similarities and differences the two poems together in
the rest of my essay by using quotes as evidence.
The Charge of The Light Brigade consists of many common techniques, for example
Tennyson uses repetition to convey the message to his readers:
Rode the six hundred
{Stanza s 1 4 The Charge of the Light Brigade}
Rode the six hundred has been repeated many times in the poem The Charge of the
Light brigade, this is just some of the techniques used by Tennyson.
The verses above have maybe more than one explanation as shown below:
The word Rode in the verse suggests that they were calmly galloping along not
running or screaming in fear. Rode itself is a nice peaceful word and can describe
them almost perfectly.
The other suggestion is that the number of the Calvary shows that there were only six
hundred of them and possibly thousands of the opponent army; Tennyson shows us
that only six hundred of the English took on thousands of the Russians to show their
27. The Rump Parliament Essays
The Rump Parliament
That the Rump Parliament had absolutely no achievements at all to its name is a
strong statement. As a governing body setup by the remnants of Pride s Purge, the
MP s that remained were all wanted there originally, indeed by the very man that
would eventually dissolve them Oliver Cromwell. So something had certainly led
Cromwell to become increasingly disillusioned with the Parliament he in sense
created. This essay will examine these reasons and just what achievements the Rump
succeeded in.
In needs to be understood just why the Rump were there at all. For what purpose had
they been created in the first place? They would surely have a set goal that had not
been met by previous parliaments. In essence, ... Show more content on

There has certainly been no invasion of England since, so is the defence of a nation
not an achievement for the Rump? They had seen a threat and dealt with it swiftly
and efficiently.
The actual members of the Rump too need to be examined. They had been left by
Pride s Purge from the parliament which stood without election since 1641.
Considering that people would not enter Parliament until at least their thirties, and
that the average life span was approximately forty five, it can be inferred that a
number of members were close to the end of their lives. These people may not have
always had Parliamentary matters on their minds, having to brave still harsh
conditions, some did not even attend.
The Rump faced stern opposition from domestic enemies also. It was attacked by
extremists who wanted the revolution taken a great deal further, and also by
Presbyterians and Royalists who wanted Charles II brought to the throne. This claim
was well supported as popular memory of his father s execution remained sour in the
mouths of contemporaries who saw him as a martyr.
The Rump did delve into social reform as they had been required to do so. They
made every effort to rid the country of extremists and dangerous sects, arresting
leveller leaders and putting down cults such as the Ranters. Acts were passed against
adultery and blasphemy. It can be argued however that these can hardly be labelled as
achievements. Laws
28. Similarities Between Girl And Girls And The
Chrysanthemums
The stories: Girl, Boys and Girls and The Chrysanthemums discuss the controversial
issue of gender inequality, feminism and sexism. Through these stories the authors
were able to prioritize the unfair treatment women had been submissive to since the
early ages. These three stories contain similarities and differences.
The most significant similarity between the three stories is the role their female
protagonists plays. In the stories, the actions and words of the main characters
reveal how society consider men the dominant figure and how women s job was to
take care of the children and the household tasks. The three stories shares a
patriarchal society in which people believed in the idea that women gain self worth,
productivity and respectability from domesticity. Elisa Allen from the story The...

In addition, the stories put emphasis on the social criticism brought upon the female
gender. For example, in the stories The Chrysanthemums and Girls the way women
dressed was key to determine the morality and decency of them.
In the story Girl the concept of feminism is observe through the mothers believes
and ideas. An example would be when the mother gave her daughter life lessons on
how to grow up to become a respectable and decent woman. These lessons included
emphasis on women s image, character, identity, domestic roles and sexuality. In
others words, the mother connotes and reinforces the gender roles established by
society s stereotypes. In the story The Chrysanthemums feminism and sexism is

How much profitable does the loyalty programs prove to be, for a customer centric

Hence a company should first figure out the basis of customer s buying decisions
before building the loyalty programs in order to serve them in the best possible
manner.
The article Listening ain t enough stresses upon the fact that customer loyalty cards
are used to generate information about the customers in order to serve them better by
developing products and services according to them. But these alone are not enough
for gaining advantage over the competitors. Trained staff with a heart to serve the
customers with customer centric approach could help in gaining the advantage.
A similar research Loyalty in Retail: A strategic success or a management failure
states that successful loyalty programs do not exist in vacuum. The loyalty cards
provided by the retailers are compared to the hammer. Just as a hammer does not
build a house, a loyalty card does not build customer loyalty. Customer loyalty has
been used as a strategic approach in increasing customer value and thus providing a
good customer experience but it doesn t work alone. A brand value has to be created
in which involvement of the staff, quality of the products, knowledge about the
customers etc. are required.
Shoppers Stop s customer loyalty program is called The First Citizen (Annexure X)
and Pantaloons customer loyalty program is Green Card Program (Annexure XI)

Funding For Sexual Research
Resistance to sex research has caused large misunderstanding about our human
sexuality. This resistance has been shaped by our society s moral views. Our society
s perceptions have greatly influence the type of sexual research conducted and the
funding that has gone towards sexual research. This has overall influenced the
outcome of sexual research has had.
Society s perception on what men and women are supposed to do sexually has
largely effected sexual research funding. When Dr. Kinsey first sought funding for

Sexuality in our society is not something that is easy for most people to talk about.
Dr. Kinsey and his assistances showed how our human emotions can cause a listener
to react to a speaker when interviewing about intimate questions. For example, When
Dr. Kinsey s assistance were interviewing him and his wife about their sex histories
there were a couple times when the research assistance showed surprise on their face
when the speaker answered unpredictably. This can cause the speaker to feel
uncomfortable and change how they answer further questions. This happened when
Dr. Kinsey and his assistant were taking the history of a rather unpleasant man. The
man they were interviewing had sexual relations that were rather inappropriate for
society s moral views, such as having intimate relations with under aged children.
This caused the assistant to become uncomfortable and storm out. In reaction to the
assistant leaving the speakers answers slightly changed as the interview finished up.
Due to these sensitivity issues regarding sexual research, researchers have needed to
adjust experiments accordingly. If our society had less resistance regarding human
sexuality it would be easier for researchers to listen without reacting

In order to successfully launder money three processes are needed: placement,

The Merging of Cultures During the New World Discovery
The voyages of the Iberians marked history. The discovery of the new world meant
the unification of two old worlds. These old worlds had different beliefs, attitudes,
language, and values. The culture of these two worlds would never be the same.
The native peoples of America at the end of the fifteenth century ranged from the
simplest hunting fishing gathering societies to highly developed civilizations with
urban and peasant components. In spite of these notable differences, they were alike
in that they had all developed from the level of pre bow arrow hunters without
significant contact with other regions. There high civilizations were based on

These people grew corn, yams, and other roots for food; they knew how to make
cassava bread, to spin and weave cotton, and make pottery. Columbus wrote, They
invite you to share anything that they posess, and show as much love as their hearts
were in it . The impression to the European scholars was that the ignorance to money
and iron, and their nudity was due to the fact that these people were holdovers from
the golden age .
The Indians were organized into class societies (with few possible exceptions among
the more rudimentary societies) and the poor were ground under the heel of the rich.
This system was sanctioned by the Indian laws and customs, and based on the
inequalities of land ownership.
The poor lived in miserable huts, did all the labor, and enjoyed none of the
amenities of life, except indulgence in the forms of escape from misery and relief
from oppression that characterized many other peoples in Europe and Asia.
The peoples inhabiting America in 1492 were divided into many hundreds of
language groups. The following main groups may be distinguished:
1.The Nahua speaking peoples from Central Mexico to Nicaragua.
2.The Maya: Yucatan and Guatemala.
3.The Chibchas: Central America, western Columbia, and northwestern Ecuador.
4.The Quechuas: the Andean mountains from southern Ecuador to northern Chile.

33. Importance Of Propaganda In Journalism
Propaganda Propaganda regards truth and reality. It is deceptive, purposely less than
honest, biased, devoid of a sense of fairness. It attempts to manipulate someone s
ideas, actions and attitudes. Propaganda can be used in journalism by manipulating
the story to be exaggerated or simply false. A journalist or public relationsspecialist
could use a false or photo shopped image in a newspaper/webpage to sway their
audience into thinking the subject of their story is true and not to their audiences
knowledge it has been manipulated.
Semantics Semantics studies how words came to be and what they mean. In a
journalistic setting when covering a story, be sure of what you are actually portraying
and what you re trying to say. There are clear distinctions between what reporting,
inferences, and judgements are.
Communitarianism Communitarianism has emphasis on society and the larger
majority of a group. In journalism or public relations and individual would look at
what brings people together. For example (fiction), covering a story about how MSU
s Homecoming parade brought helping hands together as participants prepared to rain
proof their floats last minute, which made for a successful homecoming parade. A
non Communitarianism could have reported how the rain ruined the parade and
many townspeople were outraged by the cities/schools decision to cancel the parade.
Libertarianism Libertarianism has emphasis on the individual. In public relations, by
having a libertarian

Throughout time, the progression and evolution of snowboarding has increased

snowboarding relies on two people, Jake Burton and Shaun White. Jake Burton back

Two accountants recently told me that the IRS is questioning (as they tended to do

on the basis of whether or not profits are made on a sustainable basis.
Most obviously, one of the main issues facing our industry is supply and demand
too many people willing to work for low wages in an industry in which there is too

37. Taking a Look at Human Trafficking
No nation is immune from human trafficking. Even the most powerful nations are
not immune from modern day slavery. The main contributors to human trafficking are
governmental corruption, economic and social crisis within each nation s
borders.Globalization is the development of an increasingly integration marked
especially by free trade that transcends nation state boundaries. Human trafficking
represents a highly and interconnected world because as the world evolves and
people become more connected, the transfer of people both voluntarily and coerced
is becoming more prevalent. Human trafficking is a very lucrative business that
extends beyond nation state boundaries Human trafficking represents a highly and
interconnected world because it is tightly connected to the worlds economy, and
ironically is caused by the gap of the wealthy and poor even though it has been
present for centuries the government is just beginning to address this common
problem.. Globalization seems to have played a major role in the rise of sex slavery
and the sex trade but has also played major roles in efforts to stop it. Human
trafficking is the trade of humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual
slavery, and forced labor. Forms of human trafficking dates back to at least to the
1400 s. In the 1400s through the 1600s the first signs of human trafficking were
seen. The African slave trade is an example of a form of human trafficking. During
the slave trade Africans were captured and sold

41. Aristotle Virtues
There are two kinds of virtues: moral and intellectual. Intellectual virtues are learned
by experience and time, whereas moral virtues are learned by habits and practice.
Virtues are not given to us at birth (nature); we have to make our own effort to train
ourselves to be virtuous. In the next few paragraphs, Aristotleemphasizes how
pleasure and pain play an important role in how our moral virtues are developed. To
explain he uses an example of a glutton and a temperate person and the pleasure/pain
of food. Then he talks about how many people could be just but that doesn t
necessarily mean that they are virtuous. He proceeds to talk about his three criteria to
determine if a person is virtuous. First criteria is virtuous people know that
42. Slated by Teri Terry
Slated is a novel which questions the concepts of terrorism and governmental
control. I think this was a relevant topic choice because there is a worldwide
problem of terrorism, as well as a small amount of governments misusing there power.
Slated is a novel which is well written on an intriguing concept. The author, Teri Terry,
questions topics that we don t usually think about. These concepts are mainly
terrorism and governmental control.
Slated tells us the story of someone who has undergone the process of Slating. The
society revolves around the act of Slating, the process of removing someone s
memories. The government in the novel are misusing their control, not staying with
the official rules they had set. The process of Slating was no longer a way to remove
criminals; it was a way for those in power to choose the people they wanted, and
how those people would act. Slating is not an idea which everyone agrees with.
There are people who are against the process so much they are prepared to set bombs,
killing innocents.
The novel is set around 15 years after the Coalition government was formed. When
two parties, supporting opposite beliefs came together. One side supported harsh
punishments of criminals, whilst the other wanted these criminals to be given a
second chance. The concept of Slating was a compromise that researchers accidently
came across. As time went by the government began to abuse the power they held.
The process of Slating no longer
43. The American Colonial Period
The American colonial period refers to the years 1600 1776, in which Great Britain
sent colonists to live on the east coast of North America. During this period the
American people went from dutiful British citizens to rebels who rose up against
their mother country to gain their independence. This period was formative in both
our legislation and literature, setting a precedent and groundwork for their
contemporaries and descendants. In my opinion the core of colonial American
literature can be summed up in three themes: Morality, enlightenment, and
transcendentalism. The founding fathers had a vested interest in moral conditions
and standards. Colonial America started with many religious castaways, including
Puritans and Quakers, notoriously conservative and strict in their ideologies. These
were the seeds that were sowed when these groups were isolated and began to self
govern. With the political upheaval, philosophers were... Show more content on

The invention of the printing press and the electric light let ideas spread more rapidly
and lifestyles change to accommodate the new knowledge. Rational thought and the
scientific method from Francis Bacon brought common sense and exponential
advancement to the developing country. This paved the way for modern secular
thinking and scientific advancement, including disease control, contraception, and
ethical legal proceedings. These two values came together in a specific and politically
relevant way in the 1800 s. Transcendentalism was a literary movement often
associated with writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau and
most popular in the late 1820 s and 1830 s. Transcendentalists tout the merits of
individuality, connection with nature, and total freedom. More than just a literary
theme, transcendentalism is a worldview, an optimistic one. The core belief is that
human beings and nature are inherently good, and personal intuition is to be
44. The Pearl Good Vs Evil
Evil can influence people in many ways. Evil can affect some individuals more
than others. In The Pearl the continuous fight between good and evil was present
throughout the whole novel. This battle was caused by the pearl s appearance in a
difficult time. The pearls appearance was the start of several unlucky events. Many
characters in the novel saw the pearl as something good in the story, but Barclay W.
Bates states that The great pearl brings not happiness but misery (Bates). The pearl
itself was not evil, it just brought the evil out of the people. The pearl created many
thoughts and ideas to the people around it. The wealth the pearl could of brought,
blinded many people ,especially Kino, the main character. There are other characters

The Doctor was a very unpleasant man, when he heard the news that Kino found
the pearl his character changed from bad to worse. The Doctor was very corrupt,
his misuse of his medical license was very unethical. Kino s son Coyotito was
denied treatment at first, because of his families race and social class. The pearl
was interesting to the arrogant and greedy Doctor. The Dr. basically poisoned
Coyotito, and then treated him and expected to receive payment for his treatment.
The Doctor s arrogance was the start of the evil that developed inside Kino. The
Doctors evil actions was the first time the theme of greed in the novel showed up.

45. Maternal Mortality And Death Of A Pregnant Woman Essay
Introduction
Maternal mortality/death is defined as the death of a pregnant woman by causes
related to the pregnancy or its management, or death of a post partum mother within
42 days after pregnancy termination (Requejo, Bryce, Victora, Deixel, 2013;
Ronsmans, Graham, group, 2006; Say et al., 2014). There are proposals to change
this definition to make it include one year post partum death of mothers, as the risk of
death has been shown to remain high half a year post partum (Ronsmans et al., 2006).
Many maternal deaths that occur usually occur in low and middle income countries.
In the year 2010, 287, 000 maternal deaths that were avoidable occurred, and most
occurred in these developing countries. Reduction of maternal deaths has been one of
the outcomes that have been targeted in the efforts to improve maternal health for the
Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (Say et al., 2014). In developing countries,
especially Sub Saharan Africa, where fertility levels remain high, maternal deaths
have continued to be high despite the general deaths reduction (Requejo et al., 2013).
Many argue that there is not enough information to confidently describe and quantify
this problem, but Requejo et al., 2013 reported that the available information is
sufficient.
The social issues
The causes of maternal deaths are both direct and indirect. Majorly, the causes of
maternal death are usually the aftermath of childbirth and pregnancy, and are majorly
contributed to by diseases and
46. Roman Boys Research Paper
The lives of Roman boys were indubitably intriguing, but they unquestionably
contrasted with the lives of boys today. To begin, Roman boys wore different types of
clothing, depending on their social status and money.Boys living in the lower class
wore only a tunic (tunica) and undergarments (subligaculum), while the higher classes
wore a tunic, undergarments, and togapraetexta. This was, at least, until they reached
manhood and switched out the toga praetexta, which was usually bordered with
garnet, for a plain white tunic. Wealthier boys actually had the color purple featured
somewhere on their togas, corresponding to the characters in our Ecce Romani
book. This was a symbol of economic superiority, since purple was a particularly rare
color
47. Business Ethics And The Business World
Business ethics play an essential role in the business world today. Since their
development they have become a major influence on anything business related. The
importance of ethics was chosen to give more of an in depth look at not only basic
benefits that business ethics bring about, but some less known benefits as well.
Business ethicsadd great morale to the corporation and its culture, allowing the
organization to use this as a tool for a multitude of organizational affairs. While there
are some that oppose the use of business ethicsin today s business world, the benefits
outweigh the opposition s points. Comparing and contrasting the benefits and the
opposition s invalid arguments, it can be plainly seen why business ethics should be
implemented and are a core aspect of any business that is looking to be successful in
the modern world.
Maintaining a piece of today s ever changing market is becoming increasingly
difficult. The needs of the consumer fluctuate drastically, competition is at an all time
high, and the number of competitors is increasing daily. Considering all of these
factors, it is feasible to see why a cutthroat mentality is needed and sometimes used
for business. However, this cutthroat mentality is the reason why organizations are no
longer fully trusted. With decisions and actions made by Enron, Arthur Andersen, and
Bernard Madoff, how are consumers and the public supposed to fully give their trust
to something or someone. Recently, organizations were

Abstract
In 1997, the Asian Financial Crisis spread rapidly all over the Asia and affected
almost all the economies in the world. Prior to the Asian Financial Crisis, the Asian
countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia, Hong Kong and
Singapore experienced a remarkable growth in the economy that was considered
the highest in the world. These Asian economies increased by a notable proportion
of 6 to 10 percent annually in the GDP. However, what had been regarded as an
Asian miracle seemed to crumple down rapidly 1997 when these Asian countries
were faced with a severe financial crisis in their local stock and currency ... Show

Regardless of the negotiations for support grant from the IMF and the United States
Treasury, the monetary drainage persisted and Brazil was forced to devalue its
currency. As a result, the Brazilian government authorized the real to float, while it
abandoned linking its currency to the U.S. dollar. The financial crisis in Brazil spread
out rapidly to other nations in Latin America and as a result several billions of dollars
were drained from these countries and this hindered the trade exchange with the
United States. As a result, the nations in the Latin America experienced one of the
nastiest economic recession that was mainly fuelled by the Asian financial crisis. The
effect of the financial disaster was predominantly severe in the Latin America s small
economies, for instance Bolivia, Uruguay, Ecuador, Chile and, Argentina and
Colombia (Hunter, 1999).
Petti (2001) argues that financial shocks can move rapidly throughout the nations
within similar regions as it was revealed by the Mexican peso disaster that occurred
in the year 1994. Similarly, the financial crisis that affected the Asian countries
proved to be a regional financial crisis and it threatened geographically distant vibrant
economies mostly in the Latin America. The Latin America countries began
experiencing the effects of the Asian financial crisis in 1997

the...
Intro German cinema was greatly affected during the Nazi movement between 1933
and 1945. Once appointed Chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933 Hitler
wasted no time and almost immediately began working on his propaganda strategy.
Typically propaganda targets a mass audience and relies on mass media to persuade.
Propagandais aimed at large numbers of people and, as such, relies on mass
communication to reach its audience (Gass, 14). The Nazi party used film
propaganda to brainwash the German people, distract them from the harsh reality of
the Nazi party, and attempt to intimidate the enemy. Hitler knew propaganda entailed
mass persuasion and he knew just how to get his message out there; film. It was
through the use of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Knowing this, the producers of the German war documentaries intentionally added
scenes of soldiers doing normal day to day activities in an attempt to add a human
touch.
Not all German propaganda films were shown to Germans in an attempt to create a
stronger support system for Nazi Germany. Some German of these films were made
specifically to be shown to the enemy in an attempt to intimidate the enemy into
submission. According to Sakmyster these films were far less successful and few
if any of those that viewed the films actually believed the film content to be true.
However, the Germans did not really care if non Germans actually believed the
arguments in these films [as] they were meant to frighten others into submission, to
intimidate any country that might be thinking of resisting German expansionism or
of remaining on friendly terms with Great Britain (Sakmyster). The Nazi party saw
the opportunity to use film to attempt to portray themselves as a dominant power
prepared to take on what Germany considered to be weak countries. While these
films did not appear to be successful it is possible they had an impact on the
decision of King Leopold to surrender just after the start of the German invasion. If
these films did in fact scare King Leopold into submission then the German films
proved a success. Hitler used propaganda film in an attempt to sway the
