The European CCS Demonstration Project Network was pleased to present the webinar “CO2 transport systems development status of three large-scale European CCS demonstration projects with EEPR funding” on Thursday, 26 February 2014. This webinar, presented by Jens Hetland, PhD, addressed technical and operational aspects pertaining to the transport of CO2 in Europe. It covered lessons learnt from the development of three large-scale CCS demonstration projects: the UK-based Don Valley project, the Dutch ROAD project, and the Spanish Compostilla project. These projects have been members of the European CCS Demonstration project Network since its establishment by the European Commission in 2009, when they were all selected by the European Commission to receive funding under the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR).
The purpose of the projects is to verify feasible capture techniques and to demonstrate geological storage options. As the distance and elevation of the CO2 transport system are inherently given by the project, the transport conditions for the CO2 will generally differ from one project to another.
The demonstration projects have shown that the thermophysical nature of CO2 is prone to complicate certain operational procedures mainly due to phenomena like phase change, hydrate formation and Joule-Thomson cooling. The front-end engineering design studies suggest, however, that the handling of CO2 is quite feasible during normal operation, although customised solutions may be required to handle transients like emergency shut-down and pipeline re-pressurisation. This implies that CO2 transport is not seen as an insuperable hurdle to the design and operation of large-scale CCS systems.Hassani-Iran doc
This document describes an experiment to optimize the required capacity of a re-regulating dam located downstream of a 2000 MW hydropower plant in Iran. The conventional method would require increasing the dam height by 6 meters at a high cost, but a new method takes advantage of variable power plant operations and water storage in the downstream river to need only a 1.5 meter increase. Modeling the river routing showed that variable outflows from the dam even out downstream. This optimized approach was successfully implemented, reducing construction costs while still providing sufficient flow regulation.

The complex geologic setting and historical mining of the anthracite mines creates a challenge to calculate the volume of water stored within the underground mines. EPCAMR’s recent mapping effort has reasonably found that almost 9 billion gallons of mine water resides in storage in 10 mines in the Southern Field and approximately 435 billion gallons in all the Northern Field. This associated report attempts to build on previous investigations to locate and quantify large volumes of water existing in underground mine voids, known as Mine Pools, in the Southern and Northern Anthracite Coal Fields of Eastern Pennsylvania. Cement Australia has undertaken energy efficiency assessments of its operations in accordance with regulatory requirements. Assessments are conducted annually and involve examining energy use in detail to identify opportunities. This document describes an experiment to optimize the required capacity of a re-regulating dam located downstream of a 2000 MW hydropower plant in Iran. The conventional method would require increasing the dam height by 6 meters at a high cost, but a new method takes advantage of variable power plant operations and water storage in the downstream river to need only a 1.5 meter increase. Modeling the river routing showed that variable outflows from the dam even out downstream. This optimized approach was successfully implemented, reducing construction costs while still providing sufficient flow regulation.

The complex geologic setting and historical mining of the anthracite mines creates a challenge to calculate the volume of water stored within the underground mines. EPCAMR’s recent mapping effort has reasonably found that almost 9 billion gallons of mine water resides in storage in 10 mines in the Southern Field and approximately 435 billion gallons in all the Northern Field. This associated report attempts to build on previous investigations to locate and quantify large volumes of water existing in underground mine voids, known as Mine Pools, in the Southern and Northern Anthracite Coal Fields of Eastern Pennsylvania. The goal of this project was to produce 3D Modeling of Eastern Pennsylvania Anthracite Mine Pools in Earthvision to Improve Water Quality Restoration and AMD Treatment via Consumptive Use Mitigation Projects in the Susquehanna River Basin. Assessments are conducted annually and involve examining energy use in detail to identify opportunities. Project Management Challenges in an Effluent Treatment Plant Construction
Tata Steel operates India’s largest chromite mines at the Sukinda Valley in Odisha producing chrome ore which is subsequently converted it to Ferro Chrome and sold to customers across the world. A large quantity of water, generated during mining and due to rainfall, needs to be handled during the mining operations. Chrome Ore mainly contains tri-valent Chromic oxide and a very small fraction of hexavalent di-chromate. Water coming in contact with chromium ore preferentially leaches out soluble hexavalent chromium from the ore body, as a result, water from the mine contains 0.2 – 4 mg/l of hexavalent chromium against a safe limit of 0.005 mg/l for human consumption; requiring all water to be treated before its release from the mines. Thus, Tata Steel is setting up an effluent plant at Sukinda with a capacity of 108 million litres/day; perhaps one of the largest in the region; which will be complete by end June 2015.

UBC Steam to Hot Water IDEA Main conference June 2016
The University of British Columbia converted its aging steam distribution system to a new hot water system over a 5-year, 9 phase project costing $88 million. The conversion included installing 22 km of underground piping, converting 115 buildings to the new system, and constructing a new 45 MW natural gas-fired Campus Energy Centre. The hot water system is more efficient, reducing the university's greenhouse gas emissions and saving $5.6 million per year in fuel, maintenance, and carbon tax costs compared to the old steam system. The phased approach allowed UBC to verify savings and address issues before fully committing funds.
