Occupational health and safety is important for three main reasons: (1) it protects workers' health and safety which allows them to be productive, (2) it creates a better work environment and improves productivity, and (3) it reduces costs to companies from accidents, injuries, and sick leave. Without proper health and safety policies and practices, workplaces face numerous hazards that can lead to injuries of arms and legs or other work-related accidents. When accidents do occur, organizations face moral, legal, and economic consequences including costs of claims, fines, sick leave, and lost productivity from injuries preventing employees from working. Proper health and safety practices and a strong safety culture can help reduce these risks and consequences.
Surveillance is the ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice, which is closely integrated with the timely dissemination of these data to those who need to know. To be effective, surveillance must be directly linked to preventive action.
In the case of occupational health, the actions prompted by the surveillance system should be directed not only at the individual case or the affected group, but also at the responsible workplace factors.
Surveillance programs (i.e., 2ry prevention) should be designed to support programs intended to control workplace hazards (i.e., 1ry prevention).
In OSH, surveillance programs should:
• Identify cases of occupational illness or injury; and/or
• Monitor trends of occupational illness or injury.

This document summarizes the key points from a course on animal nutrition:
- It outlines the course objectives which include understanding digestive systems, nutritional needs, and diseases for various species.
- It lists the required resources and assignments which are two exams, three student projects, and a final exam.
- It describes the two main classifications of digestive systems based on food source and stomach type including herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and their digestive features.
Camels are pseudo-ruminants that have a three-compartment stomach unlike ruminants' four compartments. The camel digestive system includes the alimentary canal (mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach consisting of compartments C1, C2, and C3, and small and large intestines) and accessory organs (teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, and pancreas). While similar to ruminants, camels' three stomach compartments differ anatomically and histologically from ruminants' rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum.
This document discusses health system evaluation and monitoring. It defines evaluation as the systematic gathering, analysis, and reporting of data to assist with decision making. Monitoring is defined as the constant collection and examination of selected program information over the life of the program. The document discusses different types of evaluations, such as prospective vs retrospective, formative vs summative, internal vs external, and descriptive vs analytical. It also discusses important indicators for evaluating health systems, including indicators for access, equity, quality, and efficiency.
The document describes the digestive systems of ruminant and non-ruminant farm animals. It discusses the parts and functions of the ruminant digestive system including the mouth, esophagus, four-compartment stomach (rumen, reticulum, omasum, abomasum), small intestine, and large intestine. It also describes the simpler digestive systems of non-ruminants like humans, dogs, cats, pigs and horses. The six major groups of nutrients - carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water - are identified along with their sources in animal feed.
Community based Health Insurance Scheme: An option to Health Care Financing i...Dr. Nkiru Nwamaka Ezeama
A synopsis of how community-based health insurance can ease the burden of health care financing in Nigeria.
Presented during the 2016 Physicians week of the Nigerian Medical Association
This document discusses health care financing in India. It defines health care financing as mobilizing and allocating funds for specific health services and payment mechanisms. India relies heavily on private out-of-pocket spending for health care, with only about 10% having health insurance. Major challenges include linking insurance to employment when most work is informal, and excluding many poor from coverage. Community-based financing models show promise in providing social inclusion and financial protection. The conclusion calls for recognizing the role of health economists and addressing health financing within broader governance, economic, educational, and social contexts.
The document discusses social change at multiple levels. It defines social change as variations or modifications in social organization, groups, communities, institutions, or the roles and statuses of members. Social change is influenced by numerous interrelated factors including technology, culture, environment, communication, and values. The rate, form, direction, causes, and order of social change are described. Barriers and stimulants to change are also cultural, social, and psychological. The document also provides examples of social change in Philippine society through modernization.

This document discusses creating a world-class organizational culture through leveraging employee well-being. It defines well-being as having five interconnected elements: career, social, financial, physical, and community well-being. A key part of well-being is developing a culture of trust, respect, communication and meaningful relationships. The document also discusses the importance of leadership in developing this culture and supporting employee well-being, engagement, and performance. It provides examples of initiatives companies can implement to enhance career and social well-being.
Scientific evidence now supports what many EHS professionals have long suspected—that risk factors in the workplace can contribute to health problems previously considered unrelated to work. As a result, there is clear value in shifting from a siloed view of employee work safety toward a more inclusive and comprehensive perspective.
Occupational health aims to promote worker well-being and prevent work-related injuries and illnesses. It seeks to maintain a balance between workers and their occupational environments. Occupational health care provides preventive healthcare services to ensure a healthy and safe work environment, prevent work-related diseases, and maintain employees' working abilities. It investigates hazards, educates on safety, monitors worker health, and supports maintaining work capacity to boost productivity while also preventing occupational diseases and injuries.

Similar to The contribution of occupational health to primary health care (prof Carel Hulshof) (20)
This document discusses integrating occupational health services into primary health care. It argues that while some countries have made progress expanding occupational health services, coverage remains low globally. Most workers, especially in informal sectors and small businesses, lack access to even basic services. The document calls for strengthening primary health care systems based on the principles of the 1978 Alma Ata Declaration, including providing universal access to essential health interventions and services. Integrating occupational health into primary care could help extend coverage of basic services to more workers and their communities through workplace and community-based delivery models.
The document provides information about the Wantveld Health Centre in the Netherlands, including its services and staff. It discusses the current separate systems for primary healthcare and occupational healthcare, noting advantages and disadvantages. Reasons are provided for joining these systems, including more focus on work and functioning for clients. Experiences of a "company doctor in primary care" are shared. The referral processes between practitioners are outlined for several client cases.
The document discusses integrating occupational health practices into primary health care in the Netherlands. Currently, the two systems are separate, with general practitioners providing primary care and company doctors providing occupational health services. The summary is:
1) There are advantages and disadvantages to the separate Dutch systems, such as GPs not being pressured to provide sick notes but also a lack of communication between the sectors.
2) The document proposes integrating company doctors into primary care to address issues like overlooking work-related causes of illness and providing a point of contact for those without regular occupational services.
3) Examples are given of clients successfully treated by a primary care company doctor by addressing both health and work-related issues. The integration could improve

The document discusses shifting the focus of primary care from episodic, disease-based care to holistic, patient-centered care that addresses social determinants of health like occupation and work. It outlines the large number of work-related injuries and illnesses in the U.S. each year and how integrating occupational health into primary care settings could help improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention for many patients. Barriers and opportunities for strengthening collaboration between occupational health and primary care professionals and institutions are also examined.
This document summarizes Dr. Issa Said Al Shuaili's presentation on integrating occupational health services into primary health care in Oman. It discusses Oman's workforce demographics and existing occupational health regulations. It then outlines Oman's experience integrating occupational health into primary care through training primary care doctors, promoting health education in workplaces, and planning to attach doctors to workplaces. Finally, it identifies capacities needed like assessing local contexts, developing human resources, and establishing evaluation systems to support a people-centered occupational health model in primary care.
1. The role of primary care centers in workers' health is to provide prevention, treatment, disability assessment, and collaboration with occupational health specialists. Electronic health records and tools can help integrate occupational health data.
2. Strengthening collaboration requires training primary care and occupational health providers together, identifying stakeholders, and removing administrative and financial barriers.
3. Supporting workers' health involves empowering workers and communities through health education, ensuring access to occupational health services, and addressing legal issues. Involving workers and unions is important.
This document outlines discussions from Round Table 2 on people-centered care. The round table focused on identifying strategies and actions to protect and promote worker health. Key questions discussed included: [1] defining the role of primary care centers in worker health; [2] strengthening collaboration between occupational health and primary care; [3] empowering workers and communities to care for their own health; and [4] actions to advance people-centered care for workers at all levels. Suggestions focused on training, guidelines, identifying stakeholders, research, and ensuring access to occupational health services.

8 Surprising Reasons To Meditate 40 Minutes A Day That Can Change Your Life.pptxHolistified Wellness
We’re talking about Vedic Meditation, a form of meditation that has been around for at least 5,000 years. Back then, the people who lived in the Indus Valley, now known as India and Pakistan, practised meditation as a fundamental part of daily life. This knowledge that has given us yoga and Ayurveda, was known as Veda, hence the name Vedic. And though there are some written records, the practice has been passed down verbally from generation to generation.

These lecture slides, by Dr Sidra Arshad, offer a quick overview of the physiological basis of a normal electrocardiogram.
Learning objectives:
1. Define an electrocardiogram (ECG) and electrocardiography
2. Describe how dipoles generated by the heart produce the waveforms of the ECG
3. Describe the components of a normal electrocardiogram of a typical bipolar lead (limb II)
4. Differentiate between intervals and segments
5. Enlist some common indications for obtaining an ECG
6. Describe the flow of current around the heart during the cardiac cycle
7. Discuss the placement and polarity of the leads of electrocardiograph
8. Describe the normal electrocardiograms recorded from the limb leads and explain the physiological basis of the different records that are obtained
9. Define mean electrical vector (axis) of the heart and give the normal range
10. Define the mean QRS vector
11. Describe the axes of leads (hexagonal reference system)
12. Comprehend the vectorial analysis of the normal ECG
13. Determine the mean electrical axis of the ventricular QRS and appreciate the mean axis deviation
14. Explain the concepts of current of injury, J point, and their significance

Is Work Good for your Health and Wellbeing?
(Waddell & Burton, 2006, Schuring 2007)
YES:
• Strong evidence: Work is generally good for physical and
mental health and wellbeing and can help recovery
• Reverses the adverse health effects of unemployment
• Beneficial effects depend on the nature and quality of work and
its social context: jobs should be safe and accommodating
• Workplace is a setting for health promotion
• Moving off benefits without entry in to work associated with
deterioration in health and wellbeing
5. MAETIS ARBO. WERKEN IS GEZOND
What is work?
Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or
near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second,
telling other people to do so. The first kind is unpleasant and ill
paid; the second is pleasant and highly paid.
Bertrand Russell. In Praise of Idleness, 1932

What determines workers’ health?
• Working environment • Work-related health practices
– mechanical – individual risk-taking behaviour
– physical – physical exercise, sedentary work
– chemical – diet and nutrition
– biological – unhealthy habits – smoking,
– ergonomic alcohol
– psycho-social risks
• (Access to) health services
• Social factors – preventive occupational health
services
– occupational status, employment
conditions – specialized curative care and
rehabilitation
– income
– health and accident insurance
– inequities in gender, race, age, etc.

basic occupational health care/services
• Bring occupational health ‘as
close as possible to where
people live and work’
• Including elements of
occupational health in Primary
Health Care
• Integration of OHC and PHC
12. MAETIS ARBO. WERKEN IS GEZOND
What?
• prevention of occupational health hazards
• diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of occupational or work-
related diseases
• surveillance of work environments and workers’ health
• health education and promotion
• risk assessment
• maintenance of work ability
13. MAETIS ARBO. WERKEN IS GEZOND
How?
• Consultation of OH professionals in PHC
• Training of PHC personnel in OH activities
• Organizing support services, e.g. (inter)national/regional OH
institutes (OH clinics, laboratory, technical support)
• OH care can support local or regional health systems in
prevention and therapy of life threatening diseases such as
malaria, HIV AIDS and tuberculosis.
• Including work (outcomes) in clinical practice guidelines

18. MAETIS ARBO. WERKEN IS GEZOND
Integration of work-related aspects in practice
guidelines in primary and secondary health care
• Many chronic diseases in PHC have an impact on work
opportunity for work-related interventions
• Guidance Document of NVAB and CBO based on answering
three questions:
are work-related disorders or disability related to the subject of this
guideline? (“doctor, is my work causing this?; can I work with this?”)
are work-related interventions possible and effective?
what is the role of occupational health care?

Collaboration between professional
associations: ICOH - Wonca
• ICOH SC on Rural Health: Agriculture, Pesticides and
Organic Dusts and Wonca already had a history of
collaboration
• In Milan 1996, presidents of ICOH and Wonca met and a joint
working group was established
• The aim of the group was: bringing together and discussing
experiences from GPs and OPs in several European
countries with providing sufficient coordinated care to working
people with health problems
