1. Introduction
Marine Engineering is an exciting and challenging career which deals with
manufacturing, designing and operation of ship machinery and engines. It is one of
the disciplines of engineering which deals with science and nautical architecture.
The marine engineers are engaged in supervising the engine crew involved in
operating the machines. They also check for the smooth functioning of all electric
motors, steam engines and propulsive engines etc. The marine engineers
continuously take efforts to improve the efficiencies of gas turbine, existing
shipboard conventional steam, nuclear propulsion plants and diesel. This is the best
field for getting excellent government jobs.
i. A brief history about Marine Engineering
The history of Marine Engineering dates back to the beginning of the Industrial
Revolution (early 1700s). In 1712 Thomas Newcomen, a blacksmith, created a
steam powered engine to pump water out of mines. In 1807 Robert
Fulton successfully used a steam engine to propel a vessel through the water.
Fulton's ship used the engine to power a small wooden paddle wheel as its
propulsion system. The integration of steam engines into ships was the start of
the Marine Engineering profession.
Before the integration of engines in ships, the maritime professions consisted of
deck department jobs. This was because there was no engine for engineers to
work on. The type of propulsion used before the engine powered paddlewheel
was wind power.
Around 50 years later the steam powered paddle wheels had a peak with the
creation of the Great Eastern, which was as big as one ofthe cargo ships oftoday,
700 feet in length, weighing 22,000 tons.
Marine Engineers work on more than just engines in ships. Marine engineers are
also responsible for building and maintaining offshore oil rigs. These oil rigs
were first made by Henry L. Williams in 1896.
Victoria Alexandrina Drummond MBE (1894–1978), was the first woman
marine engineer in Britain and first woman member of Institute of Marine
Engineers. In World War II she served at sea as an engineering officer in the
British Merchant Navy and received awards for bravery under enemy fire.

They design, construct and develop nautical equipments. After completing
Marine Engineering courses candidates can option forlucrative career options in
