1. Cover Letter
Dear Sir /Madam,
Through this letter, I want to apply for PhD position in your esteemed organization and will
illustrate my studies, skills, interest and experiences here.
I came from a humble background so has to associate myself for domestic and agricultural works.
Working on farmland, I did tilling with cultivators and tractors, harvesting, winnowing, milling
trashing of crops, during these days all the mechanical and electrical tool used were a part of my
life like a best friend, so these tools always keep intriguing me how it works, who invented it, what
are basic principle involved in it?
Up to secondary school, I kept myself indulged in Blacksmithing, Goldsmithing, cycle repairing,
and diesel engine as well as electrical and other mechanical tool repairs.
Times fled, after completion of my secondary school, the fantasy towards the machines led me to
land at Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam Campus with Bachelor in Naval Architecture
and Ocean Engineering since I thought ship is a like a city and I will get a numerous machinery
and tools to handle and associate myself with it.
Although time plays its own part, drawing of the ship machinery and going through the various
nuances of ship structure and marine power plant was a paradigm shift from childhood fantasy,
various setbacks came but passion for this course always gave me inner strengths.
During four years, I went through various brainstorming sessions on construction and welding,
fluid mechanics, Solid mechanics, thermodynamics, hydrostatic & stability of ships, Resistance
and propulsion, ship keeping and maneuvering, ocean engineering to ship structures as well as
various competitions in the field of model making and ship construction.
After completion of 1st year of bachelor, I went through initial design of various mechanical and
civil structures at industrial site, such as Metro railway projects and Engine test cell facility’s
embedment design as an internship. During 2nd year‘s summer holidays, I went to the National
Institute of Oceanography, Goa (India) as a summer research fellow for studies of Ocean behavior,
ocean energy and detailed studies of severe tropical cyclone “ Hudhud”.
During 3rd year’s holidays, I went to Indian Register of Shipping, where I went through the
computer application in the shipping industries, since today in the 21st century, the technology is
becoming significant for day to day success. I prepared the tool for thickness calculation of
primary, secondary and tertiary members of the Inland vessel and also tested /debugged various
ingeniously developed shipping software’s related to scantling calculation, structural strength and
load line criteria for ship.
2. Then I worked at Cochin Shipyard Limited for 2 years selected through campus placement and
hold the post of Assistant Manager in Hull repair and docking at Ship repair operations.
I was responsible for preparing the docking plan, Docking/Undocking operations, carrying out
inclining experiment, sea trials, Hull and accommodation repair on allocated vessels. I have
successfully executed a highly complex project which involved complete design change to a ship
which was not meeting Stability standards. Further I have also undertaken various modification
projects of Commercial ,Naval and Coast Guard Vessels and always had solutions to technical
issues related to ship structure propulsion.
Then in September 2019, I joined University of Liege, Belgium for master in Mechanical
Engineering “Specialized in Advanced Ship design” and gone through the courses such as Design
of Ship and Offshore Structures, Ship Theory and Dynamics, Integrated Ship design Project,
Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization and Other courses of Mechanical Engineering.
Therefore, I assure you that the knowledge experiences and academic projects I undertaken has
suited me industrial PhD profile and I hope I will be asset to your institution.
