2. CAREC: Principles
• CAREC - platform for cooperation, knowledge
and technology exchange:
– to address environmental and development challenges
– at the local, national and regional level through multi-state
and multi-stakeholder negotiations, dialogues
• CAREC is promoting:
– development and implementation of innovative
environmental development policies,
– management approaches and international best
practices in the region

3. • CAREC have a mandate both from Central Asian
States and Civil Society
• CAREC is catalysing and coordinating:
– environmental and development activities both inside as
well as among the CA states
• CAREC operates as a project organization and social
entrepreneur at regional level in CA
• CAREC is represented in each country of Central Asia
via Country Offices and regionally in Almaty

• Partnerships with regional organizations in CA:
– Regional cooperation priorities and institutional efforts
• Partnerships with international development and
scientific communities:
– Knowledge bridging, agenda setting and advocacy
• Partnerships with states, NGOs, civil society,
academia and business in Central Asia:
– Representation, involvement and cooperation

5. CAREC: programmes
• Environmental Management and Policy (EMP):
– Promoting ecosystem services valuation, economic modelling for
environmental policies and green growth, environmental indicators,
shared environmental information system in CA, incentive based
environmental management
• Water Initiative Support (WIS):
– Improving transboundary cooperation, capacity building of stakeholders
and piloting good practices for IWRM and sustainable livelihoods
through Promotion of sustainable WRM at regional, national and local
levels, practical cooperation in small transboundary watersheds and
development of basin planning skills and practices

6. CAREC: programmes
• Climate Change and Sustainable Energy (CCSE):
– support strategies and policies of the Central Asian countries on CCSE,
for low carbon development, energy efficiency and the deployment of
renewable energy sources, and promotion of Covenant of Mayors among
cities, through capacity building, networking, information and knowledge
exchange
• Education for Sustainable Development (ESD):
– SD and ESD targets, principles in the formal, non-formal and informal
learning in Central Asia through regular education and capacity building
efforts in CAS, partnering with universities to develop the Integrating
Water cycle management course, regional exchange, networks and
learning

7. CAREC: efforts for SLM
• Linking science with development for sustainability and
effective interventions
• Two programmes (WIS and EMP) have continuous focus
on land degradation and LM, as a part of environment and
water policies interventions
• Ongoing areas of interventions in land mngt:
– Participatory Baseline assessment: analysis of current state of
land use and mngt in study basins (WIS: basin studies)
– Long-term planning: including of land component into basin
planning, linking land and water planning (WIS: basin planning)

• Economics of ecosystem services: assessing impact on
ecosystem services of different types of land mngt,
pastures, irrigated lands (EMP&WIS: ICARDA project, PES)
• NAMAs: Developing resilient and adaptive land
management: land rehabilitation, afforestation, mngt
options (CCSE and EMP, NAMA project)
• Networking: all programs support
