Landscape Learning Journey
What is the Landscape Learning Journey?
The landscape learning journey is the capacity development trajectory within the broader
Climate Change Programme. Center for Development Innovation – Wageningen UR
supports HoAREC with the implementation of this learning journey. A selected group of
facilitators and researchers from the Horn of Africa jointly embark on a journey in which
they are empowered to enhance the resilience of their landscapes. The major topic for
exchange and collective learning is that of landscape governance.
Where do we work?
Civil society members and academics of
HoA-REC&N from Djibouti, Kenya, Somaliland,
South Sudan, Sudan and Ethiopia identified
six intervention landscape areas. Each
landscape has selected 3 colleagues who
have become active members of the landscape
learning journey

course
An essential part of the Learning Journey are the face-to-face learning events
which are organised twice a year in 1 of the 6 landscapes. During each event,
one key landscape governance theme is discussed in detail e.g.: landscape
analysis, stakeholders, institutions, conflict management etc.
Action research is carried out together with the member organisations of the
Learning Journey. A landscape governance capacity framework is currently
being developed which helps to assess the strengths and weaknesses in each
landscape.
The Learning Journey has their own closed online platform where the
participants can exchange experiences and ask each other questions.
CDI-WUR runs regular international courses on Landscape Governance. Each
year, 3 participants from the Learning Journey are invited to join this
international course organized in Indonesia together with CIFOR and ICRAF
What have we achieved so far?
Various landscape governance
assessments have been carried out
in 6 landscapes (e.g):
• Landscape mapping
• Stakeholder analysis
• Institutional analysis
• Public-private partnerships
Development of a landscape
governance capacity framework
based on the practices in the
Kenyan landscape
Landscape facilitators have
strengthened and practiced their
facilitation skills
