2. CQC’s purpose
CQC’s purpose is to make sure that health and adult
social care services deliver care that is:
– safe
– effective
– compassionate and
– high-quality
CQC also encourage services, such as doctors and
hospitals, to work better

CQC’s role is to:
– register
– monitor
– inspect and
– regulate
Services (such as doctors and hospitals) to make sure they
meet fundamental (basic) standards of quality and safety
CQC also takes action to protect people who use services

4. Strategy Review
• These basic things that CQC does will not
change.
BUT
• The next five years will be a challenge for
health and social care services because more
people will need to use them. CQC will also
need to do more, with less money

5. • One idea for the new strategy is that CQC could
work more closely with care providers (the
people and organisations that provide health and
social care services).
– Many care providers already have their own quality
checks and ways of checking the care they provide.
– Inspections have shown that providers who provide
high quality care tend to also review their own
performance and see where they need to improve.

6. So what might change?
• CQC could make more use of self assessments. This
means they would ask care providers to send
information that shoes how they think they are
meeting standards and providing good quality care.
• CQC could then check this is correct against other
information they already have about the service and
what others have told them.
• This would then be used to help decide where, when
and what to inspect.

7. Note
• CQC won’t rely on just self-assessment
information when making a judgement about
a service or giving it a rating
• CQC will continue to ensure that people are
protected from poor quality care and would
continue to inspect services
• It would also continue to carry out ‘responsive
inspections’ where it finds a possible concern
about safety or quality.

• Makes it easier for providers to identify where
improvements could be made
• Better use of information
• We will need you and the rest of the public to
tell us more experiences of good and bad care
to help us check what a provider says is true.
