This document discusses three different cardiac procedures: cardiac scans, echocardiography, and extracorporeal circulation. A cardiac scan uses radioactive thallium and scanning equipment to visualize the structure and blood flow of the heart. Echocardiography is a noninvasive test that uses ultrasound to visualize the internal structures of the heart, such as the cardiac valves. Extracorporeal circulation routes blood to an external heart-lung machine during open-heart surgery to oxygenate and pump the blood through the body.
