throttle, with the govern-
ment announcing that the
next auction of carbon cred-
its will go ahead in April.
With at least $440 million
left to spend on long-term
contracts of sale for carbon
credits, interest from farmers
has been very high. One way
to get carbon credits is to re-
tain regrowth vegetation on
your property, through stop-
ping pulling, spraying and
burning trees as they come
back onto the land.
CO2 Australia Managing
Director James Bulinski said
there has been a huge uptake
across Queensland and New
South Wales, with over 160
landholders already signed
up to long-term carbon cred-
it sales contracts that provide
revenue for up to 10 years.
“We know more than a few
farmers who have secured
multi-million dollar deals
out of this,” Mr Bulinski said.
The interest has been so
great that CO2 Australia,
one of the oldest and best
credentialed carbon project
operators in the business,
have expanded their team by
bringing on David Hardie to
help get out and talk to farm-
ers about the opportunity.
“This is a great way for you
to lock in long-term cash-
flow that can support you
during lean years – I’ve lived
through a few droughts and
wish I’d had access to this,”
Mr Hardie said.
Based in Blackall, Mr
Hardie has spent the past 20
years working grazing opera-
tions around the region.
“Its fantastic to see anoth-
er option for getting revenue

Most farmers who are tak-
ing on carbon projects are al-
so continuing to run grazing
operations on their property.

paid twice for the same bit of
land – once for grazing and
again for the carbon credits.”
While there are big dol-
lars involved, setting up and
running a carbon project in-
volves a lot of technical work,
government paperwork and
set-up costs. For this reason,
many people are choosing
to work with expert carbon

push to help farmers get into
carbon projects.
“I’m out on the road talk-
ing to people from as far

in the north,” Mr Hardie said.
“We are usually looking at
properties of at least 10,000
acres with large areas of
younger regrowth com-
ing back.”
Unfortunately, the time
for participating may be
running out, with over 80 per
cent of the government fund-
ing already committed to
farmers who got in early. It’s
widely expected that the gov-
ernment may hold its final
carbon credit auctions this
year, so anyone trying to get
in after will likely miss out.
Mr Bulinski, is encourag-
ing people to act now.
"Anyone with an interest in
getting paid for carbon cred-
its should get in touch with
us, as the next few months
are going to be crucial for an-
yone that wants to be a part
of this.
“There’s some real urgen-
cy to get projects through in
time and our field crews have
been flat out for months now
doing on-ground assess-
ments and getting projects
up and running.”
