The Symbolism of the Conch
For centuries philosophers, have debated the question of whether man is naturally
evil. William Golding poses this question in his novel Lord of the Flies. Set on a
tropical island during World War II, the novel begins when schoolboys from Great
Britain are being flown to safety and their plane is shot down. No adults survive, and
the boys are left to control themselves and get rescued. The boys find a conch, which
is a symbol of power and authority to whoever has it in his possession. William
Golding uses symbolism in the form of the conch to represent the concept of society.

When the boys first start a fire on top of the mountain, Piggy holds the conch and
attempts to speak. But Jack scolds him by saying, The conch doesn t count on top
of the mountain, so you shut up (Golding 39). Boys like Jack begin to place

In this coursework experiment I plan to find the rate of osmosis in different

Potato). I will measure the mass before and after the experiment to use the results to
calculate the rate of osmosis, and to find trends in the vegetables.
To ensure the experiment is fair, I will control all the other variables (Temperature,
size of chip at 5cm x 1cm, concentration of solution at 0.2M etc.). I will repeat the

Columbine, Sandy Hook, and the UT Tower shooting are just a few examples of the
terror parents, teachers, and students face today. More and more massacres and
threats are affecting our schools on a daily basis. No one should fear to receive an
education and certainly no parent should fear their child entering the doors of an
elementary school. What can we do to prevent these tragedies from happening
again? How can we strip the worry from the men, women and children involved in
our educational systems at work today? The only options to putting an end to the
untimely and unfair deaths of our teachers and students is tighter security, psych
evaluations, and armed personnel. This means of security should not only be
present in high schools or Jr. Highs, but should be present in all of our educational
buildings, including colleges, elementary schools and child care centers. All of the
places listed should be aware and willing to respond with any force necessary to
protect their lives and the lives of others. More security cameras, attending at least
one anti bullying program per school year, teachers need training to psychologically
assess a troubled student, and armed teachers should all play a role in defending and
keeping our schools safe. This is not taking our freedom but protecting our right to

Studies on vigilance and sustained attention have been a widely studied part of
psychology since the Second World War. This is because it was found that people
monitoring radars for enemy ships experienced what is now known as vigilance
decrement. That is when the ability of a subject to detect an abnormality during a task
which primarily displays a normal screen. In the case of WWII radar monitors, this
was to detect when an enemy submarine entered the radar. (Helton, W. S. Russell, P.
N. (2012). ) After a short time, typically 20 30 minutes but in certain cases as little as
5 minutes, vigilance decrement can occur. (Caggio, D. M., Parasuraman, R. (2004)).
There are two main theories commonly cited to explain this phenomenon, mindless
theory and resource theory. Resource theory says that the vigilance decrement is due
to the exhaustion of brain resources required to maintain focus on the task.

The field of social work has experienced an increased awareness of the need to
advanced in both educational and professional development. I realize that
preparation for this career actually includes a great deal of required coursework and
hours of field experience. My fieldwork is central to my learning and serves as an
integrative experience in which I use what was previously learned in class and apply
it to my practice experience.
I am currently in a very rewarding field study at the Osborne Association, Training to
Work Program. Training to Work offers mentorship and opportunities to both men and
women who are on work release. The program is designed to reduce the rate of
recidivism and to assist participants in gaining meaningful employment and trainings.
This experience requires considerable amount of meeting with participants and
providing support, empowerment and advocacy.
My supervisor is a central feature of my field experience as she ensures the
integration and application of knowledge, theory and skill that was taught in the
classroom. Each week my supervisor who is very skilled and encouraging provides
a one hour supervision session where process recordings are reviewed and any
concerns or personal challenges are addressed. In addition, my strengths are also
highlighted, as well as any struggles that I may appear to be having, and my
adaptation to the program.

how these images are presented that leads me to believe that they are contributing to a

One example of this problem is the recent broadcasting of crimes within schools.

Each team has six players on the ice, one goalie, two defensemen, two wingers, and
one center man. The players skate up and down the ice shooting or passing a hard
rubber disk called a puck with sticks. They score points by hitting the puck into the

Stick handling is the use of the stick to control the puck. The player first moves the
puck with one side of the blade and then with the other side while skating. The
player makes some sweeps of the stick some wide and some narrow. In this way the
player keeps the opponent guessing as to the next move and also makes it difficult
to steal the puck. Shooting is the skill needed to drive the puck into the net and
score goals. Most shots are either wrist shots or slap shots. In a wrist shot the blade

author then claims that 2,4 D can actually cause cancerin humans because it

Instead of talking about chemicals and pesticides and the dangers of using then,
Stratton Porter gets us to think about the environment by promoting it. Then the
Winter Swamp had all the lacy exquisite beauty of such locations when snow and
frost draped, while from May until October it was practically tropical jungle, she
writes (Citation here). Not only does she focus on the land and plants, but she also
talks about the animals that live in this swamp, primarily moths, calling them, fragile
night wanderers and moonflowers of June s darkness (Citation here). The Limberlost
Swamp sounds like a beautiful place that you would want to visit, right? Of course,
the hidden implication is that you can t, or at least not unless humans change the way
we treat the environment.
An additional technique used by authors to motivate readers to treat the
environment well is using fictional works to get their message across. A well
known example of this is The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. When you read this story as a
kid, you may not realize that the story intentionally mirrors our world today, but
eventually you realize that it isn t just about truffalump trees being cut down; it s
about real ones: pine trees and oaks and sycamores, to name a few. The humming
fish mentioned in the story may not exist in real life, but we are harming actual fish
by polluting our rivers with dangerous

status in the world for granted. Often, we as humans forget that we are not actually
