CANBUS or Controller Area Network bus is an automotive serial bus system that allows microcontrollers in a vehicle to communicate over a pair of wires. It was developed in the 1980s by Bosch to satisfy requirements for networking multiple microcontrollers at high speed with real-time communication and noise immunity. CANBUS uses differential signaling over two wires and arbitration to ensure only one node transmits at a time, allowing message-based communication of up to 8 bytes of data at speeds up to 1Mbps over distances of up to 120 feet. It is now also used in industrial automation and medical equipment.
