Canberra is located 280 km south-west of Sydney and 660 km north-east of Melbourne. It was designed after an international competition in 1911 to be the capital city of Australia. The city's design was influenced by the garden city movement and it is now home to important institutions like the Australian War Memorial, National Museum of Australia, and the buildings that make up the national Parliament.
