Canada has made significant contributions to space exploration including the Canadarm, Canadarm 2, and Dextre. The Canadarm debuted in 1981 on the Columbia space shuttle and has been used on the Hubble Space Telescope and International Space Station to retrieve satellites and repair equipment. Canadarm 2 proved bigger, stronger and more dexterous. Dextre is a two-armed robot that performs repairs on the ISS otherwise requiring spacewalks. Canada also launched its first satellite Alouette 1 in 1962 and has since become a leader in communication satellite development and use.
