2. NEWS
WRITING
Basics of Newswriting
News writing simply means chronicling
current events, new initiatives or ongoing
projects or issues but not necessarily
writing the news of the day but also
writing the important background of the
events with emphasize on accuracy,
objectivity and balance reporting.
3. It attempts to answer all the
basic questions like WHO,
WHAT, WHERE, WHY,
WHEN and HOW.

Basics of Newswriting
4. If you wish to cover the public hearing on the
proposed āprivatizationā of Baguio General Hospital
and Medical Center, these are the basic questions
you need to answer:
WHO are the officials and participants present?
WHAT are the concerns/issues at hand?
WHERE is the venue of the forum?
WHEN was the forum held?
WHY are they conducting a public forum?
HOW the officials/proponents conducted the forum?
5. LEAD:
Contains the 5 Ws & 1 H
BODY:
Contains details
of the event
Background:
Related events in the past
INVERTED PYRAMID
6. LEAD:
Ideally, the first sentence or
paragraph should contain enough
information to give the reader a
good overview of the entire story.
The rest of the article explains and
expands on the beginning.
7. Benguet Congressman Ronald Cosalan
reported on Thursday the Committee on Labor
and Employment of the House of
Representatives will be conducting a Luzon-
wide consultation relative to the P125 Wage
Hike Bill at the Valley Hotel, Strawberry Fields,
La Trinidad, Benguet from 9 am to 1 pm on
January 18, 2014.
Applying the Inverted Pyramid:
8. PROBLEM: Inverted pyramid
tends to make the lead of the
story long and so complex
which violates the journalism
principle of one sentence; one
idea.
9. BOX STORY
LEAD: It does not necessarily contain
all the 5 Ws and 1 H.
SUB-LEAD: Contains some of the Ws or
the H if not mentioned in the lead.
BODY: Contains details of the event
Background:Related events in the past
10. LEAD:
The Committee on Labor and
Employment of the House of
Representatives will conduct a
Luzon-wide consultation on the
P125 Wage Hike Bill at the Valley
Hotel, Strawberry Fields, La
Trinidad, Benguet on Jan. 18.
Applying the Box Story Method:
11. SUB-LEAD:
Benguet Rep. Ronald Cosalan
announced the consultation during a
press conference on Thursday, saying
the event, which will start at around
9:00a.m., hopes to hear all the
concerns of the various sectors
especially the labor force.
12. LEAD: Officials of the University of Baguio have announced
they have decided during their meeting in Manila on September
7 the school will increase the current tuition and other
miscellaneous fees by five percent, which would take effect
during the first semester of school year 2014-2015.
WHY?
SUBLEAD: UB officials, in a press statement, explained the
tuition and other fee increase must be implemented for the
school to generate amount to upgrade the school facilities that
would benefit the students and faculty staffs.
Tuition hike issue:
13. 1. HARD LEAD aims to provide a
comprehensive thesis which tells the
reader what the article will cover.
NASA announced today it is proposing
another space project, which aims to send
another person to the moon but it said this
can be achieved if the Senate allows the
budget request of approximately US10
million.
TYPES OF LEAD:
14. 2. A SOFT LEAD introduces the
topic in a more creative manner.
Humans will be going to the moon
again. The NASA announcement
came as the agency requested
US$10 million budget for the project.
15. 1.QUESTION LEAD:
Did thousands of University of Baguio
students have benefited from the recent
tuition and fee hike? School officials said yes
but student leaders are saying otherwise.
2. QUOTATION LEAD:
"Praise God. Thank you for rescuing me."
UNORTHODOX TYPE OF LEADS:
16. Bear in mind the first
sentence can always be
rewritten or discarded. The
important thing is simply to
get started.
When Writing a Story:
17. 1. Keep leads short. Those with 35 words or
less are preferred.
2. Leads limited to one or two sentences are
preferred.
3. Avoid starting leads with "when" or "where"
unless the time or place is unusual. Most leads
start with "who" or "what."
WRITING THE LEAD
18. 1.Begin with a subject and verb:
āThe seven dwarfs worked industriously at the
mines from morn till night.ā
2. Begin with a one-word modifier: āIndustriously,
the seven dwarfs worked at the mines from morn till
night.ā
3. Begin with a prepositional phrase:
āFrom morn till night, the seven dwarfs worked
industriously at the mines.ā
7 WAYS TO BEGIN (A LEAD) SENTENCES
19. 4. Begin with a participial phrase:
āWorking industriously, the seven dwarfs stayed at
the mines from morn till night.
5. Begin with an appositive:
āIndustrious workers, the seven dwarfs worked at
the mines from morn till night.ā
6. Begin with an infinitive phrase:
āTo work the mines, the seven dwarfs stayed there
from morn till night.ā
7. Begin with a subordinate clause:
āSince the seven industrious dwarfs were keen on
working the mines, they would stay there from
morn till night.ā
20. LAST January 17, 2013, Benguet Congressman
Ronald Cosalan reported that the Committee on
Labor and Employment of the House of
Representatives will be conducting a Luzon-wide
consultation relative to the P125 Wage Hike Bill at
the Valley Hotel, Strawberry Fields, La Trinidad,
Benguet from 9 am to 1 pm on January 18, 2014.
AVOID THIS KIND OF LEAD:
21. The body of the story involves
combining the opinions of the people
you interview, some factual data, and a
narrative which helps the story flow.
As a reminder, you are not allowed to
"editorializeā by stating your own opinion
in any way.
WRITING THE BODY:
22. ā¢ Keep paragraphs short.
Those limited to 60 words
are preferred.
ā¢ Paragraphs limited to one to
three sentences are
preferred
23. LEAD: Concerned agencies will
know the pulse of concerned
residents and groups during a
public hearing on July 20 about the
planned construction of an
engineered sanitary landfill (ESL) in
Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet.
Public hearing on ESL project
in Itogon village set on July 20
24. SUB-LEAD: This after Benguet Rep.
Ronald Cosalan reported Friday that
officials at the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources
(DENR) and National Commission on
Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) will be
present during the public consultation
set at the Ampucao gym at 9:00a.m.
25. (1)Also expected to attend are
municipal and barangay officials of
Itogon, including representatives of the
South Korea-based group of investors,
who proposed to fund the waste
facility project worth US$43million or
almost P1.8 billion.
BODY:
26. (2) "The public consultation is
necessary considering that many
indigenous peoples in Itogon
expressed some concerns that
need to be cleared by the
proponents, including the officials
endorsing the project," Cosalan
said.
27. (3) The Benguet solon, former
executive director of the defunct
Office of Northern Cultural
Communities, said that free prior and
informed consent (FPIC) of concerned
residents should be secured first as
one of the major requirements in
giving of necessary permits by
government agencies.
28. Up to now, concerned indigenous peoples have
been seeking for more public consultations for
them to air their concerns even as they iterated that
the government must first secure FPIC before
proceeding further with the proposed project.
The petitioning residents earlier said that some
queries raised during a public consultation on June
11, 2011 were not sufficiently answered and there
was no decision made whether the people of
barangay Ampucao are in favor or against the
proposed ESL.
Continuation of Body of story:
29. Background is important:
Very often, you will write a news story updating
something which has been reported before. We call
stories which continue to produce new
developments running stories.
You cannot assume when writing a follow-up that
your readers s will know the original facts of the
story. One or two paragraphs of well-written
background details must be included in the body of
your news story, so that it makes complete sense.
30. Recently, Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan
announced that Itogon Mayor Oscar Camantiles
and Benguet Gov. Nestor Fongwan signed the
joint manifestation of support to the project
disproving earlier reports of the town headās
alleged dissenting position.
The manifestation of support is necessary in
securing government permits, which are needed
before any project like the ESL starts. āHarley F.

BACKGROUND:
31. Tips on Newswriting
1. Sentence contains only one idea.
Ex: A public hearing about the proposed
engineered sanitary landfill (ESL) at
barangay Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet is
set on July 20 while Ampucao will
celebrated its barangay fiesta this coming
December.
32. 2. Preferably, use active voice:
ACTIVE: Benguet Rep. Ronald Cosalan
scolded the proponents of the proposed ESL
project In Itogon, Benguet.
PASSIVE: The proponents of the ESL project
in Itogon, Benguet were scolded by Benguet
Rep. Ronald Cosalan for not sufficiently
complying the requirements of law.
33. 2. Preferably, use active voice:
ACTIVE: Benguet solon scolds ESL
proponents during a forum
PASSIVE: ESL proponents scolded
by Benguet solon during forum
34. 3. BE SIMPLE with use of familiar
words.
Remember who your readers are. And if
your readers are the general public -
which includes everyone from the fifth-
grader to the rocket scientist - then your
writing should strive for simplicity, clarity
and brevity. Say what you have to say in
simple, clear terms, with as few words as
possible.
35. 4. Always double-check the spelling of
names.
5. Make sure numbers match the items
listed
6. Leave your story and do something else
to clear your mind.
7. Use a dictionary and style book
36. Direct Quote:
Full direct quote, some times called āthatā
technique, uses a speakerās exact words, a
verbatim report enclosed in quotation marks.
Why itās important:
1. Provides authenticity
2. Increases reader interest
3. Personalizes the story
37. Attribution: Indicate the source of a story or
fact and thus giving the information
authenticity and credibility.
The proposed ESL project will solve the
worsening garbage crisis in Baguio and other
urban areas in Benguet, according to
Ampucao punong barangay Freddie
Amuasen.
38. TO SUMMARIZE:
Remember to read your story through
thoroughly before handing it in. If you find
any errors, correct them - then read it through
again!
Ask yourself the following questions:
ļ Have you presented the facts in an orderly
manner?
ļ If your story is a follow-up or part of a
running story, have you provided sufficient
background information?
39. ļ Can you simplify any of the words or
grammar to make the story easier to
understand?
ļ Have you used quotes to enliven the
story? Have you attributed the facts
and opinions to the right people?
ļ Have you read it through again?
40. Remember to:
ā¢ List all your facts
ā¢ Arrange your facts in a descending order
ā¢ Write the lead making sure to play up the
most interesting or important points. THE
LESS WORDS,
THE MORE CATCHING IT WILL BE.
41. ā¢ Write the next paragraph or paragraphs
presenting the other highlights or
answering the questions not yet answered
ā¢ Add the other facts keeping in mind their
descending order of importance.
42. ā¢ Give your source or authority
when necessary
ā¢ Do not cover all the major
components in the lead
ā¢ Avoid beginning with āThere isā¦,ā
āA,ā āAn,ā āThe.ā
43. ā¢ EACH PARAGRAPH OF A NEWS
STORY MUST BE A SELF
CONTAINED UNIT
ā¢ As much as possible, use words
that are understood by the average
readers
44. ā¢ Identify all persons; write their full
names the first
time they are mentioned
ā¢ Time element is an important part
of your story
ā¢ Avoid editorializing
ā¢ Write one-idea, one-sentence
paragraphs
45. ā¢ Avoid wordiness. Do not use a phrase
when a word will do, nor a clause when
a phrase will do. When two words have
the same meaning, use the shorter one.
ā¢ Let fact and not imagination be your
guide.
ā¢ Shorten your paragraphs
