Checklist for News Stories
 Are the most important and recent facts
first?
 Is the story accurate? Are the sources
identified fully?
 Are the paragraphs short?
 Is the sentence structure varied in the story?
Does your story flow? Did you use the

Pitfalls to Avoid
 Editorializing - Keep your opinion out of the
story
 Using first and second person POV - Keep
yourself out of the story. Common error “our
school”
 Missing lead
 Messy handwriting, poor grammar and spelling
 Paragraphs are too long
 Misspelling names in the story
Trying to use all of the information
Let’s start from
the beginning
with …
LEAD
•Lead is a single word, a phrase, a
clause, a brief sentence, an entire
paragraph or a series of paragraphs.
• The main functions of the lead, aside
from introducing the news story, are
to tell the story in capsule form and
to answer right away the questions
the reader would naturally ask.
• A good lead answers all the
important questions of the reader,
indicates the facts if they are all
important, and arouses the readers’
interest to continue reading the
story.

By plotting seminars for the

Ways of avoiding illegal drugs were
given emphasis during the discussion to
almost 300 participants from Grade 7-10
students who were identified as most prone to
illegal activities.
In addition, teenage pregnancy was
also highlighted. As a matter of fact, PO3
Jenny Delaon revealed that one in ten young
Filipino women, age 15-19, has experienced
child bearing and 8 % were already mothers
and another 2% are pregnant. Thus, PNP and
other government agencies actively worked
hand in hand to lessen the number of affected
students.
Body
Furthermore, the police officer shared
that by giving fliers with a prevention signage
and conducting symposium and seminars,
they were able to spread awareness and at
the same time help students avoid
inappropriate actions which could lead to
heavy consequences .
“Gahatag mi ug fliers para matutukan
jud ni nga mga cases. Gaconduct pud mi ug
mga activities, seminar ug symposium for
mostly 7-10 graders who were victims of drug
abuse,” she said.

She also highlighted that the scope
of their advocacy is not only centered in
the central and national high schools.
They also visited other schools in the
nearby barangays.
“Magconduct man pud mi sa
Tapaz, Awao, Sampaguita ug Aurora
pero more on prevention sa jud mi labaw
na sa mga Grade 7 kay bag-o ra sila sa
teenage level mao na mintras sayo pa, i-
prevent na sila,” she stressed.
Body
Moreover, they discussed the
rules to enlighten the young
listeners on what should they do
and shouldn’t do.
She also informed the crowd
that the government provides
budget and supports to carry out
their goal which is not only a drug
free municipality but also a safe
