Camphor can be produced either naturally from the wood of Camphor trees or synthetically. Historically, camphor was produced naturally from Japanese camphor trees but the yield was low. In the early 20th century, synthetic production was developed using pine trees as a source material, which is much more abundant and provides a much higher yield of around 90%. Synthetic camphor production is also much cheaper and can be produced at a larger scale than natural camphor. As a result, synthetic camphor makes up the majority of the market and is around 3 times cheaper than natural camphor.
