COURSE OBJECTIVE
• Basic understanding of Different Camera Angles.
• Technical knowledge of Camera movements
• Learning about the use of different shots in TV
Programme Production
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
TOPIC OBJECTIVE
• A series of frames together constitute a shot.
• The number of frames you shoot between the
switching on and switching off the record button
on your camera constitutes a shot.
• A series of frames that you see between two cuts
in a film is a shot.
• A frame is the basic unit of the shot.
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
WHAT IS A SHOT?
• While a frame is the basic unit of a shot, both
video and film have shots as their basic unit.
• They are not just a series of images but have been
arranged deliberately to convey some information,
some meaning.
• The director talks to his audiences through a series
of shots.
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
ROLE OF SHOTS
• Highlight or emphasize the principal subject
• Present a purposeful variation in its size
• Add more information
• Establish the relationship between the elements in
a frame.
• Favour the appearance of the performer.
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
PURPOSE OF SHOTS
• FRAMING / LENGTH of the shot
• ANGLE of the shot
• MOVEMENT involved

CAMERAANGLES
• Eye-Level- shows subjects as in real life. It is a fairly
neutral shot.
• High Angle- shows the subject from above, i.e. the
camera is angled down towards the subject.
Effect of diminishing the subject.
Subject appears less powerful, less significant or
even submissive.
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
CAMERA ANGLES
• Low Angle - shows the subject from below
Creates impression of being more powerful or
dominant.
• Bird's Eye View- shown from directly above.
Unnatural point of view
Dramatic effect used for showing a different spatial
perspective.
Slanted - Camera is purposely tilted to one side so the
horizon is on an angle.
Creates an interesting and dramatic effect.
Basically used in music video production
Popular in MTV-style video production

CAMERA ANGLES

CAMERA ANGLES
• THE AERIAL SHOT - Filmed from the air
Used to establish a location
• THE ESTABLISHING SHOT- Head of the scene and
establishes the location and the action
• Sets the tone of the scene
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
CAMERA ANGLES
• THE CLOSE-UP (CU)- Framed from above the
shoulders and keeps only the actor’s face in full frame
Captures the smallest facial variations
Eliminates any surrounding
Major component in cinematic story telling.
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
CAMERA ANGLES
• THE EXTREME CLOSE-UP (ECU)- Focuses on a
small part of the actor’s face or body
• Conveys intense and intimate emotions.
• THE MEDIUM SHOT (MS)- Also referred to as a
‘semi-close shot’ or ‘mid-shot’
• Shoots the actor(s) from the waist up
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
CAMERA ANGLES
• THE DOLLY ZOOM- Sees the camera track forward
from the actor while zooming out
Background increases or decreases across the frame
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
CAMERA ANGLES
• THE OVER-THE-SHOULDER SHOT (OTS) -
Camera is positioned behind a subject’s shoulder
Used for filming conversations between two actors.
• THE TWO-SHOT - Shows two characters within the
frame
www.cuchd.in Campus: Gharuan, Mohali
CAMERA ANGLES
• THE WIDE (OR LONG) SHOT - Frames the subject from
the top of their head to their feet Captures the environment.
• THE MID LONG SHOT- (MLS): From head to the just
below of the knees or above the ankle.
• THE EXTREME LONG SHOT (ELS)- Has the background
dominating the subject.
• THE MASTER SHOT – Identifies key signifiers and
Captures all actors in the scene
