Essay about Developing My Critical Thinking Skills
Given the especially large number of students you see each semester, I don t expect any
recollection of my presence in your COMM150 class I certainly wasn t an exemplary enough
student to have left any lasting memories (which is both good and bad). But I wanted to share
with you a small anecdote, because four years later I ve realized that your class served as an
important catalyst in the development of my critical thinking abilities.
As a freshmen at the Altoona campus, I took your class on a whim because I needed a Comm
class. Of course I was confident (re: cocky) in my abilities, so I didn t study for exams and ended
up in a bad place part way through the semester. That s when you offered an extra credit assignment

Do the Right Thing is a 1989 film by Spike Lee. According to Entertainment Weekly, it is one of
the 25 most controversial films ever. It was deemed culturally significant by the Library of
Congress in 1999, and then placed in the National Film Registry. The story follows the lives of
citizens of the Bedford Stuyvesant District in New York City, on the hottest day of the summer,
and what they do to cope with the heat. To summarize the entire plot it ends in a riot. I d like to
analyze some of the situations found in the movie, and discuss how, if at all, it related to race
relations in America. When watching the film, I wasn t overly interested in the plot. Nothing
interesting happened (until the end of the movie) and there was nothing that made me (as a
viewer) intrigued to continue watching. What I found important, however, was the character
portrayals in the movie, and this is what kept me watching. I m not sure what Lee wanted from
this movie, because to me, it seemed as if he was being a) overtly racist towards non African
Americans, and b) stereotypical of his own race. Throughout the movie I was astounded by the
portrayal of the black characters in this movie. Specifically, Buggin Out s character. While I
realize that the character s name is a direct reference to his personality, I think Lee went a bit too
far. For example, when the white cyclist accidentally scuffed his

The Apartheid Of South African Apartheid
The avowal that the apartheid vision for democracy necessitated state terror and repression is
evident when examining the South African apartheid system between 1960 1994. The system of
apartheid spiked significant internal resistance, hence, the ideology for apartheid stems from the
creation of a white state surrounded by economically interdependent and politically dependent black
states, which required state terror and repression to ensure mounting resistance and international
condemnation did not abolish the apartheid system. The government responded to a series of
popular uprisings and protests with police brutality, which increased support for armed resistance.
Detentions were set without trial, torture, censorship and the outlawing of political oppositional
organizations such as The African National Congress, the Black Conscious Movement, the Azanian
Peoples Organisation, The Pan Africanist Congress and the United Democratic Front, were all a
result of the apartheid government due to political resistance.
In 1960 South Africa s policies were subject to international scrutiny and the Sharpeville massacre
resulted in international condemnation. The United Nations conservative stance on the apartheid
changed. The Sharpeville massacre had shaken the global community, with the apartheid regime
threatening that it would possess violent behavior and lead into state terror to repress opposition to
racial inequity. Apartheid was seen as a danger to the global community in

Observation In Early Childhood Education
Observation
In order to be a good educator, it is critical to observe children during their learning experiences.
Observations allow the educator to determine what the child knows, can do and understand (Early
Childhood Australia, 2012, p.1). Observations help the educator to implement experiences, which
are of interest to the children helping to build on their knowledge. According to Curtis Carter (2013,
p. 16) educators have many demands and distractions; therefore learning to pay attention requires
systematic study and ongoing practice. It was nice to conduct an experience with two children,
however, I feel that in an early childhood setting there would be many distractions that I would have
to overcome.
Observing Liliana and Ella ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When interacting with the children I was sure to stand back and observe them allowing them to
engage with one another. Only when the children asked for help or included me in the experience
did I contribute. By doing this I felt that I was able to offer both Liliana and Ella the time required
to engage in the experience and with one another. Liliana took photos of Ella and I and we all
reflected on what was happening (Curtis Carter, 2013, p.15). This continued throughout the
experience with us discussing what could be seen and what the children were doing allowing us to
all reflect on the experience and the chance for me to enhance their learning.
Interpretation
Interpreting what is happening throughout the experience is essential, allowing the educator to
reflect on the experience. According to the DEEWR (2009, p. 17) interpretation allows educators to
collect rich and meaningful information, which describes their progress and identifies the children
s strengths, skills, and understanding. By conducting observations during the experience, I was
able to interpret what was happening in the experience at a later time.
I used observations, which included jottings, photographs and recorded the experience. By using a
variety of different observations I was able to interpret what the

The Dark Triad And Sexual Harassment
Section One: Summary and Analysis (Strength and Weaknesses) The article The Dark Triad and
sexual harassment proclivity consists of research that concerns the importance of individuals with
tendencies that engage in sexual behaviors. It s unfortunate that sexual harassment is even
prevalent at such a high rate within our society. Moreover, it state that 44% of female and 19% of
male federal employees report that they have been sexually harassed at work (United States Merit
Systems protection Board, 1995). Consequently, there are results of sexual harassmentwithin the job
sector such as lack of job employment, lack of adjustment after the situations, and the like.
Therefore, according to the article, researchers began to expand their understanding of sexual
harassment and the causes of behavior that promote sexual harassment. More specifically, this
article states ...Previous research has established that these traits are connected with aspects of
sexual aggression (e.g. Figueredo, Gladden, Sisco, Patch, Jones, 2015, Jones Olderbak, 2014).
Therefore, two studies were conducted that connected the personality traits of The Dark Triadsuch
as narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism to situations or reasons behind sexual
harassment proclivity. One study focused on the positive associations of Dark Triad traits to sexual
harassment. The second study was similar to the first study result; however, it also revealed how
Dark Triad traits were connected to the

the Hunter region, we will highlight the growing success in a snapshot of the past four years and
indicators for the current year of RoboCup Junior in the Hunter Region, as seen in Table 1.
Over the past four years, there has been a general increase in the number of students, teams, and
schools (with the exception of 2015), with a total of 698 (139 Females participants (2012=43,
2013=18, 2014=46, 2015=32)) student participants, with students as young as 10 years of age in
their 4th school year participating in the Hunter Region RoboCup Junior competition. Additionally,
as the initiative matured, we saw an increase in spatial coverage of the schools participating in the
competition; Table 1: Geographical Representation of Participating Schools, which included
schools from the Central coast, and as far north as Camden Haven, and even some elite schools
from the Sydney Region attending the tournament, in 2014.

Cultural Competence Of Law Enforcement Agencies
Discussion
Although the questionnaire and interview processes are useful in gaining a better understanding of
the cultural competence of law enforcement agencies, they are not helpful in improving the cultural
competency of those agencies. This is where instituting mandatory cultural competency training
comes into play. For example, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission proposed steps and
recommendations to increase cultural competency and one of those steps was to develop and
deploy effective EEO and diversity/inclusion training for different state and local law enforcement
audiences, including department leadership, human resources, and hiring officials, union
leadership, and individual officers. (Yang, 2015). While this recommendation pertains to hiring
practices, it would also be very beneficial for law enforcement agencies to have trainings. Cultural
competency training is important and would greatly improve relations between law enforcement
and the community.
A study by the Pew Research Center found that very few people in the U.S. say police forces do
well in treating people equally. (Pew Research Center, 2014). It is likely that the results from the
Pew study would be similar if the study were limited to Texas. Perhaps the results would be even
worse in Texas in light of the recent incident in which officer Miller shot and killed Christian
Taylor. The study illustrates how poorly the public views law enforcement in regards to treating
people equally. Studies

Alcohol And Substance Abuse And The National Minimum...
Since alcohol and substance abuse have come into play, along with health issues, and emotional
issues in peoples lives, questions started to arise. One being the legal age to start drinking
alcohol. The national minimum drinking age act was signed on July 17th, 1984 to the law, with
the drinking age at minimum being 21 (Archer M.D.). An adult is any person who s reached the
age of maturity as directed by law (Archer M.D.). Legally, being 18 years old in the U.S. is
considered to be the adult age, but the consumption of alcohol has always been withheld from the
young adults of today, until the age of 21. When you re 18 year old, you can apply for a credit
card, legally marry whoever you may want without parental consent, divorce, rent,... Show more

At the same time, moderate drinking helps lower levels of cholesterol and prevents colds, unless
the drinker smokes tobacco, meaning moderate drinking with care can be seen as not harmful
when done by responsible adults (Pringle). Even though 18 is the adult age in the U.S. 18 19 is
still technically the teenager age and teens are said to be at a more extreme risk than adults
would be to die in a car crash, partially because of alcohol s stronger effects on lighter people
(Pringle). Should 18 be the legal age for alcohol consumption? Although denying young adults to
alcohol may seem unfair, 21 should be the legal age for alcohol consumption in the U.S. rather than
18, because of the overall improved death and health rates shown as the outcome.
Currently in the U.S. the legal drinking age is at 21, an age that many people believe is fair. In the
U.S. more than 25k lives have been saved because of the 21 minimum legal drinking age
(Madd). Although health facts and opinions all have their own facts, the statistics don t lie.
Even with 18 20 year olds legally being accepted as adults, this age group is still more likely to
illegally drink because they re so close to the legal age. But those who start drinking before the
age of 21 are more likely to be involved in violent behaviors, attempt suicide, have unprotected
sex, develop alcoholic problems, and more (Pringle). On top of this, drinking at a young age
greatly increases the risk of developing alcohol

about the main religions in Utah. The two most prevalent, being the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the Catholic faith. I would like to know more about their beliefs,
holidays, and family traditions. Some of the main beliefs in the LDS culture are Jesusis the Savior
of all man, The Word of Wisdom, and the church was restored by their Prophet Joseph Smith.
Some of the main beliefs for the Catholic faith are the Bible, the different Saints, and baptism.

They then told him that he would be the prophet of the new church (Smith, n.d.). Joseph Smith s
own account of that day says,
My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I
might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able
to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was
right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong) and which I should
join. (Smith,n.d.)
He then became the first prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The LDS
Church believes that he translated the gold plates to what is now called the Book of Mormon, the
main scripture for the LDS church (Dirkmaat,2013). It is also believed that he received many
revelations from God. He was persecuted throughout his life and ended up dying a martyr at the
age of 38 (McKeever,n.d.).
Holidays in the LDS faith are quite the same as the rest world. The most popular holiday
that they celebrate is Christmas. They believe that Christmas is a time to celebrate and remember
Jesus Christ s birth. Thomas Monson, a prophet of the LDS church states, When we have the spirit
of Christmas, we remember Him whose birth we commemorate at this season of the year. We

That is the kind of market power that anti trust laws are meant to control. However, it should be
noted that in general vertical merger concerns are likely to arise only if market power already
exists in one or more markets along the supply chain. Conglomerate mergers involve firms that
operate in different product markets, without a vertical relationship. They may be product extension
mergers, i.e. mergers between firms that produce different but related products or pure
conglomerate mergers. Conglomerate mergers generally involve the union of two companies that
have no type of common interest, are not in competition with any of the same competitors, and do
not make use of the same suppliers or vendors. Essentially, the conglomerate merger usually brings
together two companies with no connections whatsoever under one corporate umbrella. This type
of arrangement can be very desirable when the investors for the newly created conglomerate wish
to create a strong presence in two different markets. In practice, the focus is on mergers between
companies that are active in related or neighboring markets, e.g., mergers involving suppliers of
complementary products or of products belonging to a range of products that is generally sold to

many different cultures, but several in particular have had especially lasting influence on the

Responsible StewardshipPage 1
Responsible Stewardship of Wild and Marine Life
And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven
hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all . Daniel 2:38
The above mentioned scripture from the Holy Bible may be interpreted in many ways, but in
regards to stewardship, it displays God s overwhelming trust in mankind to protect and preserve the
wildlife that he created. Even so, stewardship should not be taken lightly. It is a privilege
bestowed upon mankind that not only embellishes God s plan to protect what he created but it
also gives mankind a moral and ethical responsibility to ensure that our planet will continue to
have sustainable resources for future generations to come. The word stewardship can be defined in
many ways to suit many purposes, but for the purpose of preserving wildlife and other natural
resources, the best definition comes from the Merriam Webster online dictionary. According to
Webster, stewardship is defined as the careful and responsible management of something entrusted
to one s care (2012). When it comes to managing and planning resources related to our planet,
stewardship embodies this concept fully. In the criminal justice field there are several areas in
which stewardship is used to preserve our natural resources such as land and water. One of the most
prevalent stewardships pertains to the conservation of wildlife

Pioneer Bluffs Essay
Located in the heart of the Flint Hills, Pioneer Bluffs, a classic farmstead north of Matfield Green
with a natural beauty and repository of Kansas farming and ranching heritage, is now a respected
arts and education center. It is also a National Register Historic District with a classic early 20th

through Prairie Talk discussions, The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs contemporary art exhibit, and Maud

The story of Pioneer Bluffs began in 1859 when Charles Rogler, a young Austrian immigrant,
walked more than three hundred miles from Iowa to build a new life in Kansas. His plot was at
the confluence of a river and creek with a mix of bottomland prairie for crops, timber for building
and fuel, miles of open prairie for livestock pasturage, and limestone bluff for protection. Charles
survived violence, drought, and disease to expand his 160 acre homestead into a 1,800 acre farm
that supplied all of the family s needs. Charles son, Henry took over the operation c.1898 and

ignited a competitive sports drink market. Before PowerAde s launch in 1992, the sports drink
market was solely monopolized by Gatorade. Nevertheless, PowerAde extricated itself from
Gatorade by adding vitamins B3, B6, and B12, which were said to enhance the metabolism of
carbohydrate energy. At this time, PowerAde took 36% of the market share in the Fitness... Show

The judge concluded that there was no value to Gatorade s grievance that PowerAde s marketing
slogan inferred that PowerAde Ion4 was more complete than Gatorade. The ruling may have
seemed like a win for PowerAde, but the damage was already done due to the lawsuit s pessimistic
publicity.
PowerAde has grown successfully over the past years by globally employing principle marketing
strategies that adhere to several facets of sport drink consumers. First, PowerAde increased its
association with developed high profile international sporting events such as the Olympics,
NASCAR, PGA tour, NHRA, NCAA, AFL, and FIFA World Cup. Second, PowerAde has levied
global communications to speak to consumers by upholding a hospitable appearance through the
use of global media outlets. Both marketing strategies have highly influenced adolescents which
helped PowerAde achieve its high ranked status in the sport drink industry. The sport drink industry
spends almost one billion dollars on endorsements each year. Furthermore, celebrities are featured in
endorsements campaigns such as TV commercials, billboard campaigns, print advertising, and
website ads that reinforce an affable marketing strategy. Both methods of advertisement are
appealing to adolescents because they dream to be like these celebrities. Furthermore, the mode of
advertisement caters to the desired physical attributes that adolescents desire to possess.

The Importance Of Education In The 1920 s
The 1920 s was an extravagant decade in American history. Many people had bought new items,
such as radios, and played the stock market without worrying about the loans they used for the new
items and stock market. The 1920 s also brought about change in the United States, such as women
s suffrage and Prohibition. Despite Prohibition making the consumption and possession of alcohol
illegal, many people went to speakeasies to drink alcohol. The government could not effectively
control the drug and alcohol use in the 1920 s, but it did have control over education. With the
government s ability to control education, it gained importance and attention in the 1920 s.

Comparing The Pentagram And Pentacle Symbols
The Pentagram and Pentacle Symbolism, 1, Explain It, Kristin Hitchcock With the rise of interest
in Wiccan and Paganism, there has also been a rise in the misunderstanding of certain symbols.
Two of these symbols, the pentagram and pentacle, have perhaps more misunderstanding than
most. Many modern people consider them both symbols of evil and satanic worship. When they
imagine either one of these symbols, they commonly see them being used in blood sacrifices or
black magick. However, these symbols are actually connected with none of these concepts. Instead,
they have a long history and have been used by cultures for centuries to represent all sorts of things
from the five elements to the five wounds of Christ. The Pentagramis defined... Show more content

It has been used as a sacred symbol since ancient times by many different cultures from Egypt to
India. In many ancient cultures, the number five was sacred and had great religious
significance. This can be seen most easily in the myths of the ancient Celts, where the number
five appeared numerous times. Ireland had five great roads, five provinces, and five paths of
law. In another culture, the Greeks specifically, the Pythagoreans considered the pentagram to
be a symbol of man, because of the fivefold division of man s body (right leg, left leg, right arm,
left arm, head). They also taught that it represented to forces that made up the universe air,
water, fire, earth, and spirit. This symbolism has persisted for centuries and is still used widely
today by modern Pagans. The pentacle, while it can represent some of the pentagram s
associations, has various other meanings as well. With the addition of the circle, it becomes a
symbol of protection, and is commonly used by modern Pagans in this sense. When added to the
pentagram s symbolism of the five elements, however, the circle can also cause the pentacle to
represent unity and oneness with the universe. However, a pentacle also refers to a solid, plate like
object that is commonly found on many Wiccan altars. In this context, it represents earth and is

Analysis Of The Pardoner
My initial reaction to the work was one on astonishment. Everything that the Pardoner was
saying and describing reminded me of the Evangelists of today of who travel from town to town
and setup great big tents just to steal the money from good hard working people from the way the
Pardoner has the same sermon practiced and rehearsed. Upon first reading, I have read this poem
more than a few times, I jotted down some words that I had never heard of before, those being;
Cuckold, Avarice, and Jakes.
Geoffrey Chaucer lived between 1340 and 1400 in London England. The son of a Sommelier of
sorts, his family made their money from the selling and buying of wine. In his teens Chaucer went
to fight in the hundred years war during he was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In every small village that he visits his sermon topic is always the same: greed is the root of evil.
The Pardoner always preaches about greed, the same sin that he admits to possessing. Although the
Pardoner himself is guilty of Greed, he warns people about the dangers of covetousness through
examples from history and the Bible. However, the Pardoner himself states For I ll have money,
wool, and cheese, and wheat, though given by the poorest serving lad, or by the poorest widow in
the place meaning that he would rather take from the starving and destitute than give up his
creature comforts.
In Flanders, there were three young hooligans who loved to amuse themselves by gambling, being
rambunctious and drinking. The Pardoner goes into a speech of criticism about their sinful lives.
Finally, after his long speech, the Pardoner reflects back onto the three young hooligans, who are
drinking at the tavern when they hear the church bell signaling the sound of a passing coffin. A
servant tells the group of travelers that the dead man was a friend of the three who had been
stabbed in the night by a thief called Death . The young hooligans declare that they will find and
kill the thief Death. They pledge to each other as brothers in their endeavor.

The Crop Of Crop Rotation
Crop rotation is a systematic approach to choosing which crop to plant where in your vegetable
garden from one year to the next. The goals of crop rotation are to help manage soil fertility and to
help reduce conflicts with soilborne diseases and soil dwelling insects like corn. This process then
changes the different types of nutrients in the soilhelping the soil to have more nutrients and the
cropsto be better at resisting diseases and pests. One of the methods that was used with this

progressing is to be watched by farmers. This ensures the best crops to mature and grow. One of
the organic fertilizers the farmer uses is milorganite. Milorganite is one of the oldest branded
fertilizers on the market today. It is composed of heat dried microbes that have digested the organic

Australia s Restrictive Immigration Control
Australia has arguably the most restrictive immigration control in the world and has very tough
policies in place for asylum seekers who arrive by boat. Under Australia s system of mandatory
detention, all non citizens who are in Australia without a valid visa must be detained, including
children. In 2012, offshore processing of asylum seekers commenced and detention centres in
Nauru and Manus Island (Papua New Guinea) were established. This new system enforced
policies that transferred asylum seekers who arrive by boat without a valid visa to a third country.
Once the processing of asylum seekers was completed, those found to be genuine refugees will be
resettled in Papua New Guinea or Cambodia, not Australia. The Abbott Government stated that no
immigrant who arrives in Australia by boat will be grated a visa, no matter the legitimacy of their
claim. In April 2016, the Manus Island detention centre was closed after the Supreme Court of
Papua New Guinea found it to be illegal. Current immigration Peter Dutton has made it clear that
asylum seekers on Manus Island are the responsibility of Papua New Guinea and would not come to
Australia. As well as the hundreds of immigrants in offshore detention centres, there are hundreds
more in community detention in Australia. There are currently over 26,800 visa applications from
those who are awaiting the outcome of their refugeeapplication whilst living on a bridging visa in
Australia. Detention has found to have a significant

Burn Injury Research Paper
Living With a Burn Injury
The number of burns that require medical attention in the United States are 1.1 million every year.
Burns are injuries caused either by heat, chemicals, sunlight, radiation, or electricity (Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, (n.d.). Statistics show most burn injuries for women and children
occur in the home and for men they typically occur at the workplace. They are classified as first,
second, or third degree, usually by how deep and severely they breach the skins surface (World
Health Organization, (2017, January). It s important to know the signs and symptoms of a burn
injury to ensure the right kind of medical treatment is provided.
Classifications
First degree burns only cause damage to the outer layer of the skin also known as the epidermis.
Second degree burn damage extends as far as the dermis layer, which is the layer beneath the
epidermis (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (n.d.). These burns sometimes will need a
skin graft to enclose the area and protect it while in the healing process. After having damaged or
completely destroyed both the top two layers of the skin, a third degree burn extends past the hair
follicles and sweat glands causing damage to the underlying tissue. These kinds of burns will
almost always require the use of a skin graft (John Hopkins Health Medicine ... Show more content

Second degree burns will have a deep reddening of the skin, blisters, and may include loss of
some of the skin. They sometimes tend to have a glossy appearance from leaking fluid (World

charred with the skin having a tendency to appear leathery and dry. Unfortunately there is no

Joan of Arc Jacques d Arc and his wife Isabelle were blessed with a baby girl early in the year
1412. They named her Jeanne d Arc, also known as Joan of Arc. They lived in a village called
Domremy on the border of eastern France. During the time of Joan s birth, the French and English
had a truce. But events coming soon, will determine the life and death of Joan of Arc. An internal
war had erupted between two factions of the French Royal family which in turn, would make it
easier for the English to invade once again. One side of the faction was called the Orleanist or
Armagnac faction which was led by Count Bernard VII and Duke Charles of Orleans. Their rivals
were known as the Burgundians who were led by Duke John the fearless of Burgundy. While the
French remained divided due to their factions at war, the diplomats failed to extend the treaty with
England that was in place. In August of 1415, King Henry V invaded Franceand then defeated an

Dollar General Financial Analysis Essay
This analysis contains references to years 2010 and 2009 for Dollar General Corporation, which
represent fiscal years ended January 28, 2011 and January 29, 2010 respectively. The main issues
which the company is concerned about are its ability to increase sales and profitability and reduce
costs in the current economic situation; another issue is an ability to repay an extensive amount of
long term debt which increases its risks. Analysis of profitability The rate of return on assets for
Dollar General for 2010 was 6.8% thus for each dollar the company used it earned $0.068. For
2009 ROA was 3.8%, so ROA increased between 2009 and 2010 fiscal years. Profit Margin for

ratio of 20% or more. Dollar General has a high long term liquidity risk. Interest coverage Ratio
for 2010 is 3.6 and for 2009 is 1.6. A high fluctuation makes the company risky, although it
exceeded a 3.0 benchmark in 2010 it should show this stability over time. In conclusion, financial
statements of Dollar General present the increase in company s profitability and sales over the

Many internet companies operate as online retailers only which means they don t have to pay
any intermediaries such as distributors and they don t have to hire sales people. Thus, they can
pass some of the savings to the customers by offering reduced prices. Internet also enables the
customers to do price comparisons in an instant, thus, they can buy from the online retailer that
offers the best prices. Internet companies are aware of this thus, they price their inventory
competitively. Moreover, companies get bigger audience of their products online so they often
put clearance products on sale and offer other deals to clear out inventory faster. Moreover, most
customers are also able to save on taxes because taxes are applicable only if the online retailer

only they have to invest in physical property but they also have to hire sales people and

Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart Essay
Many of the spiritual systems that are practiced by African cultures, whether the culture is native or
mainstream, are mostly organized. They all have a certain degree of the priest class, libation,
holidays, creation stories, divine systems of punishments and rewards. In the novel, Things Fall
Apart, written by Chinua Achebe, is a story of tragic fall of a protagonist and the Igbo culture.
Achebe demonstrates different examples and situations of where an African culture, in the
instances of tribal religions, did certain things because of their tradition is and the way they
developed into. African cultures pondered life mysteries and articulated their religions in terms of
the implications of these mysteries through their farming, entertainment, and daily subsistence by
Achebe using cultural traditional and language in an unbiased way to send a message to Western
Colonial nations that African nations have a strong culture and language that is unique to these
nations. Farming, hunting, and daily substances are what make African cultures distinct from one
another. Every African tribe has different methods, techniques and reasoning are for the way they
do stuff. Their everyday life, farming, and entertainment can be compared and contrast through their
similarities and differences. Achebe helps demonstrates how the Ibo tribe pondered these life
mysteries by showing different examples of what it meant to farm, hunt, and their every day to day

Antoinette s Treatment Of Women In The Late 1800s
The novel opens a short while after the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 ended slavery in the British
Empire on 1 August 1834. The protagonist Antoinette relates the story of her life from childhood to
her arranged marriage to an unnamed Englishman . As their marriage progresses, Antoinette, whom
he renames Bertha and confines to a locked room, descends into madness, in part from despair at
being torn from her island home in the Caribbean and subjected to an alien culture and climate.
Part One takes place in Coulibri, Jamaica, and is narrated by Antoinette as a child. Since the
abolition of slavery her family has become very poor, Antoinette s mother Annette must remarry to a
wealthy Englishman Mr. Mason. Angry at the returning prosperity of their... Show more content on

In Wide Sargasso Sea Jean Rhys draws attention to the colonialism and slave trade by which both
Mr. Rochester and Antoinette made their fortunes. The novel does not shy away from
uncomfortable truths about British history that had been neglected in Bronte s narrative. Trevor
Hope remarks that the triumphant conflagration of Thornfield Hall in Wide Sargasso Sea may at
one level mark a vengeful attack upon the earlier textual structure . The destruction of Thornfield
hall occurs in both novels however Rhys epitomizes the fire as a liberating experience for
Antoinette. If then Thornfield hall represents domestic ideas of Britishness then Hope suggests
Wide Sargasso Sea is taking residence inside the textual domicile of empire in order to bring about
its disintegration or even, indeed, its

North And South s Compromises In The 1800s
A compromise is an agreement made by two sides each making concessions. The compromises of
the nineteenth century were ultimately perfidies. The North had constantly given into the South s
desires. Although the North was able to give the South what they requested, this eventually led to
the secession of the South. Two main compromises that lead the South to gain more power
included the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and the Tariff of 1833 due to the North and South s
dispute on slavery since the framing of the constitution. During the 1844 presidential elections,
Henry Clay had been nominated as a candidate for the Whig Party. Clay had recently left the Senate
after serving for Kentucky s senator. Clay was a nationalist. He attempted to mediate... Show more

Although they fought for the abolition of slavery, the compromise didn t succeed for long in
approving abolition provisions but instead free state provisions. The North and South constantly
fought over the matter of slavery. However in 1833, the North gave into South Carolina s demands.
Subsequently, the Tariff Act of 1832, South Carolina passed a statue of nullification which stated
that the federal tariff laws were invalid. The state attempted to threaten to resist by force, any
federal attempt to enforce the tariff. The president at the time, Andrew Jackson, led the change by
introducing a bill that gave presidential authority to use armed forces to carryout laws. Henry Clay
helped prepare the compromise which would be more acceptable to the South. The Tariff of 1833
helped prevent South Carolina from seceding from the Union by resisting against the federal
government. John C. Calhoun became a partisan of states rights, believing that each state was
autonomous and that any state could declare an act of Congress as unconstitutional. Calhoun, in
protest against the 1832 Tariff Act, led South Carolina in an attempt to invalidate the act. Although
this crisis was eventually settled through the Compromise of 1833, Calhoun continued to protect
slavery. John C. Calhoun was formerly Jackson s vice president, and later a South Carolina senator.
He said the North should grant the South s demands to maintain piece. He was a representative for
the South and states rights. The South was fighting for more slave territory, and had brilliant ways
of earning them. The South was ungrateful to the North for giving into their demands, and
exemplified such by seceding in the

Persuasive Essay About Makeup
Holidays such as Halloween seem to allow deviant acts to be committed with no consequences.
However, I committed a deviant act that would have been okay for Halloween but not two
weeks before Halloween. I did my makeup like a deer. Nothing extreme, yet bold enough to get a
few stares and people to notice. This change in makeup although subtle seemed to make a great
change in how people looked at me and treated me. Makeup seems normal and like it s overall
been accepted as a society, however, the current makeup trends call for on fleek or no makeup
looks, not quite for random animals. Within the United States, beauty is a high standard. That is
why many choose to wear makeup to enhance their beauty not makeup to make themselves appear

The perception people have of OfficeMax as an expensive school supply store is inaccurate. If
prices were actually compared to other stores they would be much lower and if they weren t the
store would price match them. This perception might more have to do with how the majority of
clients that are within the facility work in office jobs. This is a logical explanation since most
come to buy large quantities of office supplies or get 100 s of copies done. This perception of
the store being a high maintenance store with nice clientele is why it was a great choice to
break some norms. I began by working the floor. I would greet customers and ask if they needed
any help finding anything. I mostly got stares back and a simple no. Most people did not want
my help, which is quite odd since on a Friday night we are usually pretty packed and I m flooded
with questions. After a while of waiting for a lady finally taps my shoulder in need of
assistance. I turn to her and ask what she needs help with. I turn to see a startled face that wasn t
expecting a girl pretending to be a deer. She suddenly becomes uncomfortable and comments on
how she wasn t expecting that. She then asks me if it s something all the employees are doing. I
explain that it s not and that I chose to do this. Which leaves her confused. She then says that she
has forgotten what she needed and leaves the store. This shows how once conformity is lost people
seek another form of dealing with this

Gun Violence And Mass Shootings In The United States
So when shootings occur, especially mass shootings, the media s framing of crime related issues
often dictates whether public opinion will perceive crime as a concern of individual or social
responsibility (Iyengar cited by Payne 2014). So in other words, should the public be concerned
about specific individuals on a micro level or should everyone be accounted for. In such cases
where mass shootings occur the response to such events from our government is to remind us of
the gunviolence, to continue and place more fear into society. They briefly address the mental
health system before going onto the real situation which is the role of gun policies in an attempt to
ameliorate the public s growing demand of gun reform in the aftermath of

The Number Devil Book Report
The Number Devil A Mathematical Adventure is a trade book by Hans Magnus Enzensberger
that talks about the dreams of a boy named Robert. Robert is a typical boy who is in an algebra
course. He hates anything involving numbers and feels intimidated any time that numbers are
brought into the equation so to speak. Robert begins to dream about a Number Devil who starts
to teach him the ways of numbers. Throughout the book, we see the transformation of Robert
from a boy who hates working with numbers to a boy who yearns to learn more about why
mathematical properties are true. The Number Devil slowly begins to introduce to Robert various
tricks that he can use in order to solve problems. The Number Devil begins slowly by talking to

He started to spend more of his time in doors trying to work out complex math equations and
spent less of his time outdoors doing the things that any boy his age does. While this occurs, the
dreams involving the Number Devil start becoming more complex and involved. Eventually,
Robert has become a very good mathematician and has access to the society of Number Devils .
The story ends with Robert wishing to continue on his journey to mathematical enlightenment.
This book, based solely on appearance, looks best suited for younger readers. Having read the
book, I still feel that this a very good book for younger readers based on the font size of the book
and the added illustrations present. However, some of the content presented in the book could
easily be supplemented in an advanced mathematics course in high school (such as Calculus). I feel
that this is a very good book that can be used in order to introduce younger students to various
concepts in mathematics. In addition, this book can also be used in order to differentiate
instruction in more advanced math courses. Either function is an effective use to teach students
more about mathematics in my

Why Do Sub-Saharan African Countries Fail
4.In general, the reason of high levels of poverty in Sub Saharan according to Jeffrey Sachs is that
unlike countries in Asia, African countries failed to get onto the ladder of development which
means exporting manufactures and services in world markets, and linked to the world in the
networks of production, trade, finance, and technology. There are two main reasons why Sub
Saharan African countries fail to get into globalization. Firstly, the corruption and mismanagement
of its leaders. Corruption is probably the most understandable reason for lack of development in
this region. Take Zimbabwe for example, Zimbabwe is considered one of the most corrupt nations
in the world, ranking 163rd out of 176 countries on the latest Transparency International

  • 2. Essay about Developing My Critical Thinking Skills Given the especially large number of students you see each semester, I don t expect any recollection of my presence in your COMM150 class I certainly wasn t an exemplary enough student to have left any lasting memories (which is both good and bad). But I wanted to share with you a small anecdote, because four years later I ve realized that your class served as an important catalyst in the development of my critical thinking abilities. As a freshmen at the Altoona campus, I took your class on a whim because I needed a Comm class. Of course I was confident (re: cocky) in my abilities, so I didn t study for exams and ended up in a bad place part way through the semester. That s when you offered an extra credit assignment that required ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I didn t get it then but I certainly do now. Do the Right Thing is a 1989 film by Spike Lee. According to Entertainment Weekly, it is one of the 25 most controversial films ever. It was deemed culturally significant by the Library of Congress in 1999, and then placed in the National Film Registry. The story follows the lives of citizens of the Bedford Stuyvesant District in New York City, on the hottest day of the summer, and what they do to cope with the heat. To summarize the entire plot it ends in a riot. I d like to analyze some of the situations found in the movie, and discuss how, if at all, it related to race relations in America. When watching the film, I wasn t overly interested in the plot. Nothing interesting happened (until the end of the movie) and there was nothing that made me (as a viewer) intrigued to continue watching. What I found important, however, was the character portrayals in the movie, and this is what kept me watching. I m not sure what Lee wanted from this movie, because to me, it seemed as if he was being a) overtly racist towards non African Americans, and b) stereotypical of his own race. Throughout the movie I was astounded by the portrayal of the black characters in this movie. Specifically, Buggin Out s character. While I realize that the character s name is a direct reference to his personality, I think Lee went a bit too far. For example, when the white cyclist accidentally scuffed his ... • 3. The Apartheid Of South African Apartheid The avowal that the apartheid vision for democracy necessitated state terror and repression is evident when examining the South African apartheid system between 1960 1994. The system of apartheid spiked significant internal resistance, hence, the ideology for apartheid stems from the creation of a white state surrounded by economically interdependent and politically dependent black states, which required state terror and repression to ensure mounting resistance and international condemnation did not abolish the apartheid system. The government responded to a series of popular uprisings and protests with police brutality, which increased support for armed resistance. Detentions were set without trial, torture, censorship and the outlawing of political oppositional organizations such as The African National Congress, the Black Conscious Movement, the Azanian Peoples Organisation, The Pan Africanist Congress and the United Democratic Front, were all a result of the apartheid government due to political resistance. In 1960 South Africa s policies were subject to international scrutiny and the Sharpeville massacre resulted in international condemnation. The United Nations conservative stance on the apartheid changed. The Sharpeville massacre had shaken the global community, with the apartheid regime threatening that it would possess violent behavior and lead into state terror to repress opposition to racial inequity. Apartheid was seen as a danger to the global community in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Observation In Early Childhood Education Observation In order to be a good educator, it is critical to observe children during their learning experiences. Observations allow the educator to determine what the child knows, can do and understand (Early Childhood Australia, 2012, p.1). Observations help the educator to implement experiences, which are of interest to the children helping to build on their knowledge. According to Curtis Carter (2013, p. 16) educators have many demands and distractions; therefore learning to pay attention requires systematic study and ongoing practice. It was nice to conduct an experience with two children, however, I feel that in an early childhood setting there would be many distractions that I would have to overcome. Observing Liliana and Ella ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When interacting with the children I was sure to stand back and observe them allowing them to engage with one another. Only when the children asked for help or included me in the experience did I contribute. By doing this I felt that I was able to offer both Liliana and Ella the time required to engage in the experience and with one another. Liliana took photos of Ella and I and we all reflected on what was happening (Curtis Carter, 2013, p.15). This continued throughout the experience with us discussing what could be seen and what the children were doing allowing us to all reflect on the experience and the chance for me to enhance their learning. Interpretation Interpreting what is happening throughout the experience is essential, allowing the educator to reflect on the experience. According to the DEEWR (2009, p. 17) interpretation allows educators to collect rich and meaningful information, which describes their progress and identifies the children s strengths, skills, and understanding. By conducting observations during the experience, I was able to interpret what was happening in the experience at a later time. I used observations, which included jottings, photographs and recorded the experience. By using a variety of different observations I was able to interpret what the ... • 5. The Dark Triad And Sexual Harassment Section One: Summary and Analysis (Strength and Weaknesses) The article The Dark Triad and sexual harassment proclivity consists of research that concerns the importance of individuals with tendencies that engage in sexual behaviors. It s unfortunate that sexual harassment is even prevalent at such a high rate within our society. Moreover, it state that 44% of female and 19% of male federal employees report that they have been sexually harassed at work (United States Merit Systems protection Board, 1995). Consequently, there are results of sexual harassmentwithin the job sector such as lack of job employment, lack of adjustment after the situations, and the like. Therefore, according to the article, researchers began to expand their understanding of sexual harassment and the causes of behavior that promote sexual harassment. More specifically, this article states ...Previous research has established that these traits are connected with aspects of sexual aggression (e.g. Figueredo, Gladden, Sisco, Patch, Jones, 2015, Jones Olderbak, 2014). Therefore, two studies were conducted that connected the personality traits of The Dark Triadsuch as narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism to situations or reasons behind sexual harassment proclivity. One study focused on the positive associations of Dark Triad traits to sexual harassment. The second study was similar to the first study result; however, it also revealed how Dark Triad traits were connected to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Cultural Competence Of Law Enforcement Agencies Discussion Although the questionnaire and interview processes are useful in gaining a better understanding of the cultural competence of law enforcement agencies, they are not helpful in improving the cultural competency of those agencies. This is where instituting mandatory cultural competency training comes into play. For example, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission proposed steps and recommendations to increase cultural competency and one of those steps was to develop and deploy effective EEO and diversity/inclusion training for different state and local law enforcement audiences, including department leadership, human resources, and hiring officials, union leadership, and individual officers. (Yang, 2015). While this recommendation pertains to hiring practices, it would also be very beneficial for law enforcement agencies to have trainings. Cultural competency training is important and would greatly improve relations between law enforcement and the community. A study by the Pew Research Center found that very few people in the U.S. say police forces do well in treating people equally. (Pew Research Center, 2014). It is likely that the results from the Pew study would be similar if the study were limited to Texas. Perhaps the results would be even worse in Texas in light of the recent incident in which officer Miller shot and killed Christian Taylor. The study illustrates how poorly the public views law enforcement in regards to treating people equally. Studies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The national minimum drinking age act was signed on July 17th, 1984 to the law, with the drinking age at minimum being 21 (Archer M.D.). An adult is any person who s reached the age of maturity as directed by law (Archer M.D.). Legally, being 18 years old in the U.S. is considered to be the adult age, but the consumption of alcohol has always been withheld from the young adults of today, until the age of 21. At the same time, moderate drinking helps lower levels of cholesterol and prevents colds, unless the drinker smokes tobacco, meaning moderate drinking with care can be seen as not harmful when done by responsible adults (Pringle). Even though 18 is the adult age in the U.S. 18 19 is still technically the teenager age and teens are said to be at a more extreme risk than adults would be to die in a car crash, partially because of alcohol s stronger effects on lighter people (Pringle). Should 18 be the legal age for alcohol consumption? Although denying young adults to alcohol may seem unfair, 21 should be the legal age for alcohol consumption in the U.S. rather than 18, because of the overall improved death and health rates shown as the outcome. Currently in the U.S. the legal drinking age is at 21, an age that many people believe is fair. In the U.S. more than 25k lives have been saved because of the 21 minimum legal drinking age (Madd). Although health facts and opinions all have their own facts, the statistics don t lie. Even with 18 20 year olds legally being accepted as adults, this age group is still more likely to illegally drink because they re so close to the legal age. But those who start drinking before the age of 21 are more likely to be involved in violent behaviors, attempt suicide, have unprotected sex, develop alcoholic problems, and more (Pringle). Daniel 2:38 The above mentioned scripture from the Holy Bible may be interpreted in many ways, but in regards to stewardship, it displays God s overwhelming trust in mankind to protect and preserve the wildlife that he created. Even so, stewardship should not be taken lightly. It is also a National Register Historic District with a classic early 20th century farm house, barns, and old limestone fence. However, it wasn t until 1992 when it was suggested that the product be released as a ready to drink thirst quencher or better known as a sport drink. The ruling may have seemed like a win for PowerAde, but the damage was already done due to the lawsuit s pessimistic publicity. PowerAde has grown successfully over the past years by globally employing principle marketing strategies that adhere to several facets of sport drink consumers. First, PowerAde increased its association with developed high profile international sporting events such as the Olympics, NASCAR, PGA tour, NHRA, NCAA, AFL, and FIFA World Cup. Second, PowerAde has levied global communications to speak to consumers by upholding a hospitable appearance through the use of global media outlets. Both marketing strategies have highly influenced adolescents which helped PowerAde achieve its high ranked status in the sport drink industry. The sport drink industry spends almost one billion dollars on endorsements each year. Furthermore, celebrities are featured in endorsements campaigns such as TV commercials, billboard campaigns, print advertising, and website ads that reinforce an affable marketing strategy. Many people had bought new items, such as radios, and played the stock market without worrying about the loans they used for the new items and stock market. The 1920 s also brought about change in the United States, such as women s suffrage and Prohibition. Despite Prohibition making the consumption and possession of alcohol illegal, many people went to speakeasies to drink alcohol. Comparing The Pentagram And Pentacle Symbols The Pentagram and Pentacle Symbolism, 1, Explain It, Kristin Hitchcock With the rise of interest in Wiccan and Paganism, there has also been a rise in the misunderstanding of certain symbols. Two of these symbols, the pentagram and pentacle, have perhaps more misunderstanding than most. Many modern people consider them both symbols of evil and satanic worship. When they imagine either one of these symbols, they commonly see them being used in blood sacrifices or black magick. However, these symbols are actually connected with none of these concepts. Instead, they have a long history and have been used by cultures for centuries to represent all sorts of things from the five elements to the five wounds of Christ. The Pentagramis defined... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has been used as a sacred symbol since ancient times by many different cultures from Egypt to India. In many ancient cultures, the number five was sacred and had great religious significance. This can be seen most easily in the myths of the ancient Celts, where the number five appeared numerous times. Ireland had five great roads, five provinces, and five paths of law. In another culture, the Greeks specifically, the Pythagoreans considered the pentagram to be a symbol of man, because of the fivefold division of man s body (right leg, left leg, right arm, left arm, head). They also taught that it represented to forces that made up the universe air, water, fire, earth, and spirit. This symbolism has persisted for centuries and is still used widely today by modern Pagans. The pentacle, while it can represent some of the pentagram s associations, has various other meanings as well. With the addition of the circle, it becomes a symbol of protection, and is commonly used by modern Pagans in this sense. When added to the pentagram s symbolism of the five elements, however, the circle can also cause the pentacle to represent unity and oneness with the universe. However, a pentacle also refers to a solid, plate like object that is commonly found on many Wiccan altars. In this context, it represents earth and is used to consecrate ritual ... However, the Pardoner himself states For I ll have money, wool, and cheese, and wheat, though given by the poorest serving lad, or by the poorest widow in the place meaning that he would rather take from the starving and destitute than give up his creature comforts. Australia s Restrictive Immigration Control Australia has arguably the most restrictive immigration control in the world and has very tough policies in place for asylum seekers who arrive by boat. Under Australia s system of mandatory detention, all non citizens who are in Australia without a valid visa must be detained, including children. In 2012, offshore processing of asylum seekers commenced and detention centres in Nauru and Manus Island (Papua New Guinea) were established. This new system enforced policies that transferred asylum seekers who arrive by boat without a valid visa to a third country. The novel does not shy away from uncomfortable truths about British history that had been neglected in Bronte s narrative. Trevor Hope remarks that the triumphant conflagration of Thornfield Hall in Wide Sargasso Sea may at one level mark a vengeful attack upon the earlier textual structure . The destruction of Thornfield hall occurs in both novels however Rhys epitomizes the fire as a liberating experience for Antoinette. If then Thornfield hall represents domestic ideas of Britishness then Hope suggests Wide Sargasso Sea is taking residence inside the textual domicile of empire in order to bring about its disintegration or even, indeed, its ... • 43. North And South s Compromises In The 1800s A compromise is an agreement made by two sides each making concessions. The compromises of the nineteenth century were ultimately perfidies. The North had constantly given into the South s desires. Although the North was able to give the South what they requested, this eventually led to the secession of the South. Two main compromises that lead the South to gain more power included the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and the Tariff of 1833 due to the North and South s dispute on slavery since the framing of the constitution. During the 1844 presidential elections, Henry Clay had been nominated as a candidate for the Whig Party. Clay had recently left the Senate after serving for Kentucky s senator. Although they fought for the abolition of slavery, the compromise didn t succeed for long in approving abolition provisions but instead free state provisions. The North and South constantly fought over the matter of slavery. However in 1833, the North gave into South Carolina s demands. Subsequently, the Tariff Act of 1832, South Carolina passed a statue of nullification which stated that the federal tariff laws were invalid. The state attempted to threaten to resist by force, any federal attempt to enforce the tariff. The president at the time, Andrew Jackson, led the change by introducing a bill that gave presidential authority to use armed forces to carryout laws. Henry Clay helped prepare the compromise which would be more acceptable to the South. The Tariff of 1833 helped prevent South Carolina from seceding from the Union by resisting against the federal government. John C. Calhoun became a partisan of states rights, believing that each state was autonomous and that any state could declare an act of Congress as unconstitutional. Calhoun, in protest against the 1832 Tariff Act, led South Carolina in an attempt to invalidate the act. Although this crisis was eventually settled through the Compromise of 1833, Calhoun continued to protect slavery. John C. Calhoun was formerly Jackson s vice president, and later a South Carolina senator. He said the North should grant the South s demands to maintain piece. He was a representative for the South and states rights. The South was fighting for more slave territory, and had brilliant ways of earning them. • 45. Persuasive Essay About Makeup Holidays such as Halloween seem to allow deviant acts to be committed with no consequences. However, I committed a deviant act that would have been okay for Halloween but not two weeks before Halloween. I did my makeup like a deer. Nothing extreme, yet bold enough to get a few stares and people to notice. This change in makeup although subtle seemed to make a great change in how people looked at me and treated me. Makeup seems normal and like it s overall been accepted as a society, however, the current makeup trends call for on fleek or no makeup looks, not quite for random animals. The perception people have of OfficeMax as an expensive school supply store is inaccurate. If prices were actually compared to other stores they would be much lower and if they weren t the store would price match them. This perception might more have to do with how the majority of clients that are within the facility work in office jobs. This is a logical explanation since most come to buy large quantities of office supplies or get 100 s of copies done. This perception of the store being a high maintenance store with nice clientele is why it was a great choice to break some norms. I began by working the floor. I would greet customers and ask if they needed any help finding anything. I mostly got stares back and a simple no. Most people did not want my help, which is quite odd since on a Friday night we are usually pretty packed and I m flooded with questions. After a while of waiting for a lady finally taps my shoulder in need of assistance. I turn to her and ask what she needs help with. I turn to see a startled face that wasn t expecting a girl pretending to be a deer. She suddenly becomes uncomfortable and comments on how she wasn t expecting that. She then asks me if it s something all the employees are doing. I explain that it s not and that I chose to do this. Which leaves her confused. She then says that she has forgotten what she needed and leaves the store. This shows how once conformity is lost people seek another form of dealing with this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gun Violence And Mass Shootings In The United States So when shootings occur, especially mass shootings, the media s framing of crime related issues often dictates whether public opinion will perceive crime as a concern of individual or social responsibility (Iyengar cited by Payne 2014). So in other words, should the public be concerned about specific individuals on a micro level or should everyone be accounted for. In such cases where mass shootings occur the response to such events from our government is to remind us of the gunviolence, to continue and place more fear into society. They briefly address the mental health system before going onto the real situation which is the role of gun policies in an attempt to ameliorate the public s growing demand of gun reform in the aftermath of ...
