In the early 20th century, urban planner Daniel Burnham designed a plan to beautify Chicago against urbanization, focusing on the city center with parks, boulevards, and architecture. While the plan helped development and aesthetics initially, issues like traffic congestion and loss of green space arose as the population increased.
ASTANA KAZAKHSTAN
Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan, located in central Kazakhstan along the Ishim River. As a new town, Astana was purposefully planned and developed starting in the late 1990s to serve as the new capital after the capital was moved from Almaty. Astana has grown rapidly since then, with its population doubling to over 1 million residents. The city has a continental climate with very cold winters and warm summers. Astana's economy is centered around government, trade, industry and construction.

It also has wide roads, bicycle paths, public transportation, and a pneumatic waste disposal system to promote sustainability. The master plan was designed by the New York architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox.

Movement is fundamental to how urban places function. It relates to encouraging people to stop and spend time in public spaces, which generates life and activity. There are two types of movement - vehicular and pedestrian. Pedestrian movement is important as it allows for optional activities beyond basic travel. Space syntax theory explores how urban grid configuration and connectivity relates to pedestrian movement and densities. Well-connected places encourage more pedestrian movement and support a variety of land uses.
