This document discusses virtualization technology and its benefits. It explains that virtualization allows one physical computer to function as multiple virtual machines, improving hardware utilization. This leads to benefits like reduced costs, improved system availability, simplified testing, and quick provisioning of new servers. Specific benefits mentioned include increased hardware utilization up to 80%, energy savings up to 80%, easy testing by creating isolated copies of systems, and on-demand deployment of new servers in days instead of weeks or months.

Sam Fell - Electric Cloud - Faster Continuous Integration with ElectricAccele...DevOps Enterprise Summit
Software differentiates you from your competitors, and the speed by which you deliver new capability determines if you win or lose in today’s competitive market. If your development and test teams are currently measuring software build and test times in terms of hours or (gulp) days rather than in minutes, then you're at risk of falling behind the competition. Don’t waste time waiting for software builds, static analysis, or automated unit testing to complete.
In this session you will learn how ElectricAccelerator, Electric Cloud’s build and test acceleration platform can:
• Speed up Continuous Integration efforts by 20x-40x
• Better utilize your build and test infrastructure
• Improve developer and tester productivity
Sam Fell - Electric Cloud - Automating Continuous Delivery with ElectricFlowDevOps Enterprise Summit
Continuous Delivery takes Agile to its logical conclusion with a way of working that ensures software is always ready to release. It does this by building upon and extending Agile, CI and DevOps practices and tools to transform the way software is delivered.
Organizations that want to adopt Continuous Delivery need frequent check-ins to be verified by automated builds and tests so teams can reduce risk, deploy more often, and detect problems early.
This talk will focus on the ElectricFlow DevOps automation platform, and the functionality it exposes to:
- Enable Devs to automate complex build and test processes to drive efficient predictability at scale
- Give Ops teams a way to eliminate manual and error-prone processes to safely deploy any applications anywhere, anytime.
- Any teams to securely plug-in the clouds and tools they care about to abstract out complexity and ensure process compliance

Stop sacrificing comprehensive testing to save time
Software testers and quality assurance engineers are often pressured to cut testing time to ensure products are released on time. Usually this means running fewer tests, thus reducing software quality. This pressure is exacerbated as companies embrace a continuous integration (CI) approach which involves frequent build and test cycles, but has the side effect of further limiting the time allocated to test and analysis. Instead of reducing the number of tests in a CI cycle to reduce test time, Tanay Nagjee will discuss how entire test suites can be broken down and parallelized, reducing the time to run them by 80% or more. By leveraging a cluster of computing horsepower (either on-premise physical machines or in the cloud), large test suites can execute in a fraction of the time it takes by smartly parallelizing their individual tests. Tanay will outline a 3-step approach to achieve these results with different test frameworks. He will discuss the tools used, and will present real example data and a live demonstration.

Scalability refers to the idea of a system in which every application or piece of infrastructure can be expanded to handle increased load.
For example, suppose your web application gets featured on a popular website. Suddenly, thousands of visitors are using your app – can your infrastructure handle the traffic? Having a scalable web application ensures that it can scale up to handle the load and not crash. Crashing (or even just slow) pages leave your users unhappy and your app with a bad reputation.

What is NetBackup appliance? Is it just NetBackup pre-installed on hardware?
The answer is both yes and no.
Yes, NetBackup appliance is simply backup in a box if you are looking for a solution for your data protection and disaster recovery readiness. That is the business problem you are solving with this turnkey appliance that installs in minutes and reduce your operational costs.
No, NetBackup appliance is more than a backup in box if you are comparing it with rolling your own hardware for NetBackup or if you are comparing it with third party deduplication appliances. Here is why I say this…
NetBackup appliance comes with redundant storage in RAID6 for storing your backups
Symantec worked with Intel to design the hardware for running NetBackup optimally for predictable and consistent performance. Eliminates the guesswork while designing the solution.
Many vendors will talk about various processes running on their devices to perform integrity checks, some solutions even need blackout windows to do those operations. NetBackup appliances include Storage Foundation at no additional cost. The storage is managed by Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) and presented to operating system through Veritas File System. Why is this important? SF is industry-leading storage management infrastructure that powers the most mission-critical applications in the enterprise space. It is built for high-performance and resiliency. NetBackup appliance provides 24/7 protection with data integrity on storage provided by the industry leading technology.
The Linux based operating system, optimized for NetBackup, harden by Symantec eliminates the cost of deploying and maintaining general purpose operating system and associated IT applications.
NetBackup appliances include built-on WAN Optimization driver. Replicate to appliances on remote sites or to the cloud up to 10 times faster on across high latency links.
Your backups need to be protected. Symantec Critical System Protection provides non-signature based Host Intrusion Prevention protection. It protects against zero-day attacks using granular OS hardening policies along with application, user and device controls, all pre-defined for you in NetBackup appliance so that you don’t need to worry about configuring it.
Best of all, reduce your operational expenditure and eliminate complexity! One patch updates everything in this stack! The most holistic data protection solution with the least number of knobs to operate.
Increase density and performance with upgrades from Intel and MicrosoftPrincipled Technologies
As the needs of your business grow, so must the power of your server infrastructure. Rather than purchasing replacement servers with base configurations, consider upgrading key components to ensure you get the performance you need.
In our tests, we found that upgrading a server with the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2697v2, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 operating system, Intel SSD DC S3700 series drive, and Intel Ethernet CNA X520 series adapters supported 3.5 times more VMs than the legacy server we tested, which also meant 3.5 times the database performance and Exchange user mailboxes. Upgrading components piece by piece can improve your server capacity, but upgrading the processor, OS, storage, and network configuration together provided the biggest increase in our tests. By investing in upgraded components from Intel and Microsoft, you can get the most out of your server infrastructure both now and in the future.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Editor's Notes
Data provided by Vmware.com Server consolidation is the number one reason and success for virtualization. There is tremendous efficiency and cost savings when consolidating server infrastructure.
Today most people have servers and use tape based backups. These backups protect the data, but the system recovery process is long and slow. Often requiring a manual rebuild of the operating system and applications installed because any data can be restored and users put back to work. With Virtual Servers you can backup the “entire” server making the recovery process much much faster and accurate.
