Activity 4.1:
Getting familiar with the
Speaking tasks
• Speaking: 15 minutes
Candidates take the Speaking test with another
candidate or in a group of three, and are tested on their
ability to take part in different types of interaction: with
the examiner, with the other candidate and by
themselves. There are two examiners.

7. Part Timing Task type

The interlocutor asks you and your
partner questions about yourselves.
You may be asked about things like
your home town, your interests,
your studies, etc. Some questions
might encourage reflection or
opinion.

10. Part Timing Task type
2 4 min
The interlocutor gives you three
photographs and asks you to talk about two
of them for about 1 min. The interlocutor
then asks your partner a question about
your photographs and your partner
responds for about 30 seconds).
Then the interlocutor gives your partner
three different photographs. Your partner
talks about these photographs for about 1
minute. This time the interlocutor asks you a
question about your partner’s photographs
and you respond for about 30 seconds).

14. Part Timing Task type
3 4 min
This part is divided into two parts and the
examiner asks you and your partner to talk
together in both.
First, you will be asked to discuss a written
question. For example, you might be asked
to discuss things people might consider
when making decisions. The interlocutor
gives you prompts to help you but does not
join in the conversation.
After 2 minutes, the interlocutor will ask you
to make a decision which is related to what
you have been discussing. You have 1 minute

18. Part Timing Task type
4 5 min
The interlocutor asks some further
questions, which lead to a more general
discussion of what you have talked
about in Part 3. You may comment or
expand on your partner’s answers if you
wish.
