2. Who is he?
Charles Sanders Peirce. (September 10 1839 – April 19
1914)
He was an American philosopher, mathematician and scientist but is well
known and appreciated for his view on semiotics and his founding of
pragmatism.
He was the one who emphasized in his theory that the way we interpret a ‘sign’
is what allows it to be signified – what gives it its meaning.

4. Peirce’s theory does not focus on just concrete
signs, but any kind of sign. Everybody sees signs
and symbols in different ways.
For example, in Madonna's music video ‘like a
prayer’ it may have a meaning behind it, but different
people will see these signs in a different way. Like a
young catholic person may take this song more
seriously than an older person who is not catholic,
they will just see it as any other pop song.
5. Semiotics is the theory of logic, language,
communication and symbols and how we
interpret the meanings of ‘signs’.
