The Effects Of Video Games On Youth
A. Statement of the Research Problem:
The purpose of this research is to determine if aggressive behavior amongst the adolescent stem from playing violent video games. In 1976, the first violent
video game Death Race was released but, never held accountable for wrong doings of the youths of that time era. It has only been in recent years that society
blames the violence within these games for the negative behaviors of youths. The graphics within these games have consistently improved over that past few
decades and now seem just as realistic as life itself. Although, video games are more realistic than decades before, they are only one minute factor in
determining ones behavior. When determining if violent video games is a factor of aggressive behavior , one needs to also needs to take into consideration how
long that youth is playing a particular game, is that youth being supervised as he or she is playing that particular game, what type of social setting is involved,
and etc. From bullying to high school shootings, violent video games have been held responsible for numerous wrong doings by youths.
B. Literature Review:
Parents have been torn on whether video games impose positive or negative behaviors within our adolescent. With new video games being created and the
complexity standards being raised, the concentration levels have increased causing the brain and hands to work harder and faster. This will continue to help the
video games through life with the handling

Bioterrorism In Susan B. Cooney s Code Orange
Terrorism was the 5th top searched term on Google from 2001 to 2002. Caroline B. Cooney describes what and how a bioterrorism attack can happen in New
York City in her book, Code Orange. A Student at St. Raphael s private school, Mitty Blake is falling behind in his schoolwork, so he has to do his biology
paper on the smallpox virus. When Mitty Blake finds an old book on variola major or smallpox, he finds an envelope with 100 year old scabs from the 1904
Boston smallpox epidemic.Accidentally, Mitty gets the dust of them in his system. After realizing that he could have the monster of smallpox, he emails main
biological research centers and they get forwarded to the FBI, CDC and maybe a terrorist organization. Susan B. Cooney touches on three main points of
terrorism, the fear of terrorism after 9/11, the FBI s ability to track individuals and bioterrorism. After September 11th, America grouped up together like never
before to protect itself with the rumor of other attacks on the way. Many times Blake thinks about his virus infecting others which always leads him to
remember the September 11th attack on America. Sadly, when something bad happens, one gets put to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

is get hold of Mitty. He gets sick and they re golden. They launch the first successful bioterrorist attack on America. What Derek is saying is that if a terrorist
got hold of a deadly virus that people aren t vaccinated for, they can launch an epidemic that could wipe out a country. What makes smallpox perfect for
terrorists is that it hasn t been a thing since the 70 s. This means that people are not currently vaccinated and would never guess that they have it. Clearly,
bioterrorism is almost if not more scary than normal terrorism

Theme Of Hesitancy In Hamlet
Rebecca Kallios
12/15/17
Final Essays
Topic A. Hamlet s theme of hesitancy and action In William Shakespeare s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the protagonist, Prince Hamlet, is summoned by the
ghost of his father to seek revenge for his murder. Hamlet struggles to avenge his father s death as he is a complex character that is more analytical and
introspective, which is apparent through the first person narrated soliloquys. As the play progresses, Hamlet s inability to act adds a great weight and pressure
upon his shoulders as he wants to do right by his father as a noble son, yet he struggles to follow through. Eventually, Hamlet does kill Claudius but as a result
of his hesitancy several additional lives are lost. In the revenge tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, William Shakespeare develops the theme of hesitancy
through Hamlet s primary dilemma of avenging his father s murder. When Hamlet is first summoned by the ghost to kill Claudius, Hamlet seems eager and
determined. When the ghost calls for him to, Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder (I.v.25), Hamlet exclaims, Haste me to know t, that I, with wings as
swift/As meditation or the thoughts of love/May sweep to my revenge (I.v.29 31). When Hamlet talks to the ghost, he initially seems determined and ready to
act, but with time to think Hamlet loses his motivation. Hamlet questions whether the ghost is truly his father s spirit. The importance of religion to Hamlet is
apparent in his hesitation over the authenticity of the ghost. Protestants at this time, such as Hamlet, questioned the reality of ghosts as they believed they were
the devil in disguise. In his Act II, scene II soliloquy, Hamlet expresses his concern over the reality of the ghost when he states, ...The spirit that I have
seen/May be the devil: and the devil hath power/T assume a pleasing shape (II.ii.540 42). The power of God delays Hamlet s action, as he doesn t want to
unjustly kill a person. Another cause for Hamlet s delay is that he wants proof of Claudius s guilt. Hamlet is distraught over the fact that his mother remarried
so soon following her husband s death, especially to her husband s brother. In the Act I, scene II soliloquy, Hamlet states that

Phoenix Jackson Thesis
Phoenix Jackson
The story A Worn Path, by Eudora Welty tells the story of a woman named Phoenix Jackson, who lives in Natchez Mississippi. Phoenix has a grandson that
she cares for that has swallowed a chemical called lye, that was in many households back when Welty wrote this story. Lye poisoning was common in rural
areas. Welty is writing about this problem the hardship Phoenix Jackson went through to receive medical treatment at that time. Without the name Phoenix
Jackson and the characteristics, she possesses there is no way she could overcome the obstacles that stood in her way.
With the first name of Phoenix, Ms. Welty is showing the symbol of a Greek mythological bird that could live to be one hundred to one thousand years. The
old phoenix dies in a pile of ashes, much like the ashes used to make lye, only to reemerge a new magnificent, colorful bird, to live another cycle of life
(Wikipedia). Much like the bird, Phoenix Jackson has a red rag around her head, a wrinkled face with yellow illuminating skin, ringlets hanging from her hair,
a striped dress, and a bleached sugar sack apron (Welty). In addition, similar, her age, like the bird, Phoenix is aged but wise, likely close to one hundred years,
reemerges back to life once she received the medicine her grandson needed. Even the last name of Jackson is likely to be a symbol of a Doctor, who according
to an essay by Melisa D. Stang, Parting the Curtain on Lye Poisoning in A Worn Path, was named Chevalier

The Genre Of Matthew 23
Matthew 23:1 12
#1 The Genre
The genre of Matthew, one of four Gospels and narrative.
#2 Generic or Intrinsic conception
The generic concept of Matthew 23:1 12 is that Jesus warns the crowds and disciples against Pharisees and Scribes who do not practice what they teach, do not
serve their people, but enjoy being exalted.
#3 Observations
Literary: o In Matthew 23:1 12, the literary feature I found is explanation/analysis, interchange, and contrast. Jesus presents an idea, which is not doing what
the Pharisees and Scribes are doing. He explains this idea by providing examples of what they do in verses 5 7. The author also uses interchange because the
focus in verses 1 7 is on the Pharisees and the Scribes and what they do. However, from verses 8 12, Jesus is focusing on the multitude and his ... Show more

I once heard that one of Christian member misunderstood verse 9 in this passage. He took it literally and decided not to call his earthly father his father
because everyone is a brother in Christ. He believed that his true father is only the Father in heaven. However, this misinterpretation comes because of the lack
of cultural understanding. Father was used to recognize someone in a high title, not a physical father. Another misinterpretation can be towards our spiritual
leaders. Christians can force spiritual leaders to humble themselves because they must serve their congregation first. Also, heavier judgments and expectations
can be made upon spiritual leaders because they are not to exalt themselves.
A proper interpretation can come by looking through the historical and cultural lens. Jesus is not teaching people to deny their physical parents or judge
spiritual leaders. He is rebuking the inconsistencies of the Pharisees and Scribes. They are being hypocrites, falsely leading his people. Therefore, he is
teaching the true teacher and a father, which is in

Teton Dam Failure
Ethical Case Study of the Teton Dam Failure
The collapse of Teton Dam on June 5th 1976 marked one of the greatest civil engineering disasters in modern US history because of the utter lack of ethics that
went into the execution of project. The dam failure resulted in the deaths of 14 humans, over 13000 livestock, destroyed over 700 homes, 250 businesses, and
damaged another 3000 homes. Despite the mercifully low number of human deaths, this was an accident that never should have occurred in the first place.

proximity to the proposed site in the previous years. No real concern was given to this fact as investigations to building the dam continued. Geologically, the
site was covered in rather porous volcanic rock formations such as basalt, rhyolite, and tuff that formed from the ashes of a Yellowstone supereruption 2.1
million years ago. Porous material is not ideal for dam formation. In addition, there were significant fissures in the bedrocks. The tuff at the right abutment is
also greatly jointed, in other words the surface of the rocks were fractured into many visible pieces. The project continued with no concern for these issues as
they were technically solvable with proper treatment using

The Man He Killed By Wilfred Owen
War is an event that not many people experience directly. At the same time, too many people have endured the perils of war. War is not only a physical
battlefield, but a mental and emotional one as well. Many soldiers are forced to kill individuals they might have been friends with in different circumstances.
Those same soldiers are forgotten, or expected to be proud of the things that they did and experienced that will haunt them for the rest of their life. Three
poems describe these circumstances very well. They include The Man He Killed by Thomas Hardy, Grass by Carl Sandburg, and Dulce et Decorum Est by
Wilfred Owen. Could you imagine killing someone you know nothing about just because you were told to do so? That is something that many military

simply fixing a few things (e.g. better scheduling) is typically not enough. In this case, we must deal with the lack of capacity by addressing the bottleneck.
One important question: What resource should be the bottleneck? Typically, this will be the resource that is the most expensive (e.g. automated cutting
machine), most difficult to acquire (e.g. comes in large chucks, has long lead times), most highly trained (e.g. brain surgeons), etc. For Quinte, this is clearly
the MRI machine itself. Given the MRI should be the bottleneck; the other resources must have protective capacity. This means adding enough of everything
with cycle times longer than the MRI machine for sure an extra MR technician. The role of non bottlenecks is to protect the ability of the bottleneck to operate

show great leadership and determination to oppress Pancho Villa s army. Pancho Villa, the dictator of Mexico during this revolutionary time, also shows
prolific leadership qualities and care for his people; much like Demetrio Macias. However, at times Villa can be a ferocious general who destroyed villiages
and killed innocent victims, he shows his compassion who helped those in need and rescued orphans providing them with food, education, and a home. Pancho
Villa was a leader who only asked for your loyalty and trust, but was cruel when people tried to oppose him. Venustiano Carranza was another great leader that
was a natural at commanding his followers through the struggle of liberty. He did not show any lack of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even at the beginning of the story, when the rebellion is young, one of the men, Anastasio Montanes, after a battle shouts, viva Demetrio Macias, our leader,
and God in Heaven and his Holy Mother (1). This shows how the group looks up to Macias to lead them to the solutions to their problems and how much trust
they have him. They also have a lot of faith in Macias as in page 9, it states, Pancracio, Anastasio Montanes, Codorniz sat at the feet of the stretcher like

The Death Of The Pregnancy Test Essay
Many women find themselves in situations that leave them with an unwanted pregnancy and abort their baby. The cause of abortion could simply be a birth
control failure, from rape or incest, inability to take care of the child, or in most cases, pressure from others. Whatever the case may be, these women have
chosen to get rid of their child, without thinking of the consequences after it is done. After a mother chooses to abort her baby, she will be greatly affected
psychologically and could possibly change her and her future family s life forever.
Before the procedure is done, the mother of the child is positive about her decision, unaware of the mental experiences she will be going through. Nonetheless,
after the operation is done, the mother will experience personal shame that could result in repressed grief, causing serious problems.
The anxiety over the unwanted pregnancy; the drama of the pregnancy test; often, the difficulty of making the decision, then the waiting before the abortion
can take place; perhaps protesters in front of the clinic; the abortion clinic waiting room, crowded perhaps with other emotional women and men; the abortion
itself the doctors and nurses, the stirrups, the vacuum or other machinery then the recovery room; the pain and bleeding afterward. All these dramatic
experiences are likely to provide her with indelible memories. A woman may return to them and relive them over and over. (Vitz 1)

The Banning Of The Lottery In The United States
The history of the lottery began some fifty plus years ago where before then it was banned in every state in America. After state governments decided it was
partly their responsibility to protect citizens from the dangers of gambling, they found it to be their duty to govern the lottery. New Hampshire established the
first state lottery in 1964, it then soon spread throughout the northeast. All the states between Maryland and Maine had a lottery, by 1978. Lotteries went west
in the 1980s, adding 18 more states from Virginia to California. The southern states held out the longest. In the 1990s, only three southern states authorized
lotteries and five more in the 2000s. Today 44 states promote and operate lotteries with Wyoming being the last

Panopticism In Nineteen Eighty-Four And Frankenstein
Panopticism is a social theory named after the panopticon , which was originally developed by the French philosopher, Michel Foucault. Panopticon was first
mentioned in his book, Discipline and Punish. In his book, he refers panopticon to an experimental laboratory of power in which behaviour could be modified.
Foucault considered panopticon as a symbol of the disciplinary society of surveillance (Panopticism). In the two novels, Nineteen Eighty Four and
Frankenstein, panopticism is an element shown greatly. Though these two novels have many differences, this similarity shared between the two is equally
important.
Panopticism is the main element of the novel Nineteen Eighty Four. In the novel, it shows the dystopian life where the government, or the Party has all the
power, and they carefully monitor their citizens 24/7 with the use of telescreens, which is a television and a security camera (Orwell 5). The Party monitors the
inner party and outer party only because they are what is important, unlike the proles whom the Party does not monitor at all. Winston mentions numerous
times If there is hope it lies in the proles (Orwell 80). The proles take up 85% of the population of Oceania, therefore if there were to be a revolution the proles
could destroy the Party.
In the novel Frankenstein, panopticism is shown immediately when the monster is created. The monster has a prominent effect over Frankenstein and his
actions. Frankenstein is terrified of the monster and what he could potentially do to him and his family, he knows his creation is much larger and stronger than
he is. Although, the monster knows without Frankenstein the wish for him to have a mate would be gone. Throughout the novel, the monster is always steps
behind Frankenstein, following him everywhere (Shelley 120). The monster is continuously stating his dominance over Frankenstein, in one scene the monster
says to Frankenstein You are my creator; but I am your master; obey! (Shelley 120). The monster believes that although Victor created him, he feels this does
not mean he should obey. He believes that since he is much stronger than Frankenstein, he is the master.
When the creature asks Frankenstein to create a female version of himself

Travis Hirschi s Theory Of Immigrants And Social Control...
Immigrants and Social Control Theory
For years, society has attempted to come up with reasons as to why immigrants are involved in criminal activity at a higher rate than native born Americans.
Some point to the fact that immigrants tend to face acculturation and assimilation problems while the majority of native born Americans do not. Some even
speculate it is because immigrants tend to establish themselves in disorganized neighborhoods that are characterized by cultural, social or biological
differences which are all often associated with crime. This relationship between immigrants and crime has been in debate for over 100 years and continues to
be a controversial issue.
During the 19th century, rapid population was brought on by the migration of outsiders, notably foreign born ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is where the social theory comes in to play and approaches this relationship in a different way. Developed in 1969 by Travis Hirschi, social control theory
attempts to answer the ultimate question of why we all do not commit crimes. Social control theories are theories of socialization in which they consider the
extent to which individuals learn certain habits, attitudes and perspectives of a society. Hirschi suggests that individuals who have a strong and flexible bond to
society will be far less likely to engage in criminal activities or delinquent behaviors, whereas those who have weak bonds will. In other words, the health of a
group is determined by how well all the members of that group conform to the group s norms. Sociologist Emile Durkheim explains it best in his example of a
society of saints, where although each saint was law abiding, there would still be group norms that would separate the better saints from the less devoted

Achieving Sustainable Development Goals At A Un Summit
The United Nations General Assembly has officially adopted the Sustainable Development Goals at a UN summit in New York City as of September 27, 2015
that are to be globally implemented by 2030. This essay will discuss goal 13 take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts , along with its five
targets.
Are the Targets Truly Measurable?
The most concretely measureable target under SDG 13 is 13.a. A deadline for this target is clearly stated along with the funds and specific parties needed to
create a global impact. One will be able to identify progress, or lack of, by 2020. Target 13.b is unspecified and extremely vague, not indicating effective
strategies for its measurability. LDC s often contribute least to climate change yet are expected to suffer the greatest, there is no specific source in this target to
aid these countries in raising their planning capacities. Target 13.1 is vague making it difficult to assess if a country perhaps has not achieved this target, it only
focuses on extreme events when developing resilience and adaptive capacity to gradual shifts in climate change is crucial (ICSU, 2015). The target would need
further specification and a timeframe. Target 13.2 can be measured as one can identify if and when climate change protocols are implemented into a nations
policies and whether or not they are put into effect, however focus on only the national level is too narrow as mitigation policies can be used on different scales

Linguistic Impact Essay
Linguistic Impact In the field of Modern Languages and Linguistics, words are of great importance. A language s phonology (study of how sounds are
organized and used), morphology (study of the form and structure of words), syntax (study of the rules that govern sentence structure), semantics (study of
meaning of words, sentences, and expressions), pragmatics (study of aspects of meaning and language use and context), and phonetics (study of human speech

There is, for instance, the saying, De tal palo, tal astilla ; which literally means from such a stick such a splinter (Cuentos y dichos) . Its actual meaning is like
father like son or a chip off the old block. Although it is of Mexican origin, it has been widely used throughout Latin America and is familiar to most Spanish

Trauma, By Daniel Gilbert, And Martha Stout s The Mind s...
Trauma is an inevitable aspect of life and all humans handle it in different ways. Humans have learned over time to compensate for negative experiences in life
through the interactions of the mind, the body, and the brain. The ways in which they interact are exemplified by the biological systems highlighted in the
essays by Oliver Sacks, Daniel Gilbert, and Martha Stout. In The Mind s Eye, Sacks emphasizes that the trauma of losing one s vision often triggers the system
of the mind s eye to improve perception beyond sight, by means of neural plasticity and language. Comparatively, Gilbert suggests in his essay Immune to
Reality that negative situations in life can trigger the psychological immune system to provide protection from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is implying that many people who lose their vision have described an almost automatic improvement in their other senses, as well as mental visualization
mediated by language. Similarly, Stout explained throughout her essay that some of her patients faced events that demonstrated a trauma generated
dissociation from the body itself, or more accurately, from those aspects of mind that inform one of what is going on in the body (Stout 436). Essentially, her
patients separated their minds from their bodies, but this was a subconscious disconnection their minds did not inform them of what was happening in the
process of dissociation. Stout would therefore agree with Sacks that the improved perception by the mind s eye in blind people must occur subconsciously,
much like how individuals experience divided consciousness outside of their awareness. If the mind s eye could be controlled, for instance, then humans would
presumably have the capacity to drastically improve their mental visualization even without the loss of vision. However, humans lack the control to improve
the quality of life by using these biological systems because they occur automatically. People cannot control

As I watched many of my colleagues being escorted out of the building on a Wednesday morning in March 2016, my thoughts wandered back to those words

along the way. The message was a positive one. Success in 2015! Projects completed, money saved, and improved customer satisfaction. All of these

Surely if it was attached to a name, they wouldn t have let my colleague go. If it was attached to a name, they would have remembered that he took a lower
paying position with the company just over one year ago because management convinced him it was a more stable, longer term position. They would have
known that he had finally saved enough and just bought his first home one month prior. They would have known that he takes care of his elderly mother. If it
was attached to a name they would have known that he came to Canada to find a better life and was in the middle of a two year application process to sponsor
his wife to move to Canada. But they didn t know. How could they know? He was one of tens of thousands of employees. By outsourcing some of the work to
a firm from China, the company could potentially save millions of dollars in Operating Expenses. At the end of the day, really, management was making a
calculated decision to place shareholder value over the value of their employees.
This is a challenge with being a manager in the world of globalization. When making decisions, it s tempting to not attach names, to not attach faces, and to get
caught wearing blinders with your gaze solely focused on bottom line figures. To be fair, top level managers are primarily judged on their ability to improve
profitability. If they can t deliver financial success, they will most likely not be a top level manager for very long. Globalization is a viable

Monologue In The Siree
The use of monologue in this poem shapes a paradoxical theme, which makes the siren s motivation blurry. In the context, the poem uses the word song three
times in the first lines of three stanzas. The beginning stanzas are monologues of the siren. In the context, the song appears to be irresistibly attractive to the
men, that it makes men jump over the board even if they see where they are heading to is scattered with corpses. The footnote of the poem has clarified that
this song is chanted by the siren, and it leads to the demise of the sailors. Hence, it is reasonable to presume that the siren produces songs to lure the sailors,

Analysis Of Frances Willard And Walt Whitman Essay
Frances Willard and Walt Whitman are two significant nineteenth century American figures. Although Willard and Whitman are famous for different reasons,
they do have one characteristic in common: they have both been accused of being homosexuals. However, most people do not know this because it is not put
in history textbooks or taught in the classroom, for good reason. Public school students should not learn about Willard and Whitman s homosexuality through
their textbooks and teachers because it does not affect the significance of what these two Americans had accomplished. Not only does it not affect their
importance in United States history, but it also cannot be proven. Teaching public school students that Willard and Whitman were homosexuals would be
disrespectful to the brave and inspiring acts they have made towards the history of America. Frances Willard was an American educator, temperance reformer,
and women s advocate. She taught at a public school, was the president of the Evanston College for Ladies, and became dean of women at Northwestern
University. After Willard relinquished her career as an educator she became a reformer in the Temperance Movement. The Temperance Movement was the
social movement against the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Willard took on the duty of trying to stop alcohol consumption in the United States. She did
this without pay for many years and became the secretary of the Chicago Woman s Christian Temperance Union. While working

The Negative Effects Of Technology On Education
In our world, technology has marked its own impact in our society. Since the birth of the digital age, technology has only advanced and has lessened many
difficulties previously imposed on earlier centuries. Whether noticeable or not, technology is connected to every single action and transaction in our world
today. Mechanics, purchasing, communications, agriculture, and education are few fields where technology have been implemented in. Technology has
awarded consumers the opportunity to purchase items from any location, allows for the exchange of information through individuals, and led to productivity
and accuracy in the agricultural field. However, the use of technology has been misunderstood in its relationship with education. Opponents of technology in
terms education can state that it is the primary cause that literacy rates have decreased in recent years, since technology can distract from literacy development
or academic engagement. The question arises is technology detrimental to literacy development and engagement or is it beneficial. Should technology and the
digital age be reevaluated in its effectiveness in literacy development and academic engagement? Absolutely, technology should be reevaluated in effectiveness
in literacy development due to the fact it provides more opportunities then barriers. When evaluating ideas, we should look at the pros and the cons; and if the
pros outweighs the cons the ideas should be accepted as the influential. Technology has made literacy development more adaptable, led to the development of
new literacy skills such as critical thinking and research skills, while providing personal instruction. A benefit of technology in literacy development is that it
can reach students with learning disabilities or challenges than traditional texts. Students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, or ADHD are not able to
sit down over a long period of time and read a traditional text due to challenges imposed. To properly gain an understanding of a text time must be spent with
the existing knowledge of some words. Students or persons in general with dyslexia are unable to understand words we common take for granted students with

Nutrient Pollution In Our Waterways
Nutrient Pollution in Our Waterways

Professor Dennis Whitford
June 28, 2015 Nutrient pollution is responsible for hundreds of dead zones across the world s oceans lakes and estuaries, and the number and size of them is
growing. Many of these dead zones cover thousands of square miles where almost nothing lives (National Science Foundation, n.d., Worldwide Dead Zones
section, para. 1). Nutrient pollution, also known as eutrophication occurs when nutrients, most commonly nitrogen and phosphorus, from industrial,
agricultural, residential, and airborne sources enter the water in high concentrations. This process results in water that is too rich in nutrients. This in turn
causes a chain of events that can cause widespread ecological damage to both aquatic ecosystems. In order to reduce nutrient pollution to sustainable levels
and prevent a manmade ecological disaster, mankind must stem the flow of nutrients into our waterways by regulating the sources that contribute to it.
To address the problem of eutrophication, the causes must first be understood. Most causes of eutrophication are well known and documented. One of the
largest source contributors to the problem of eutrophication worldwide is the burning of fossil fuels, which releases nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere which
are later deposited onto the ground and in

  • 4. The Effects Of Video Games On Youth A. Statement of the Research Problem: The purpose of this research is to determine if aggressive behavior amongst the adolescent stem from playing violent video games. In 1976, the first violent video game Death Race was released but, never held accountable for wrong doings of the youths of that time era. It has only been in recent years that society blames the violence within these games for the negative behaviors of youths. The graphics within these games have consistently improved over that past few decades and now seem just as realistic as life itself. Although, video games are more realistic than decades before, they are only one minute factor in determining ones behavior. When determining if violent video games is a factor of aggressive behavior , one needs to also needs to take into consideration how long that youth is playing a particular game, is that youth being supervised as he or she is playing that particular game, what type of social setting is involved, and etc. From bullying to high school shootings, violent video games have been held responsible for numerous wrong doings by youths. B. Literature Review: Parents have been torn on whether video games impose positive or negative behaviors within our adolescent. • 5. Bioterrorism In Susan B. Cooney s Code Orange Terrorism was the 5th top searched term on Google from 2001 to 2002. Caroline B. Cooney describes what and how a bioterrorism attack can happen in New York City in her book, Code Orange. A Student at St. Raphael s private school, Mitty Blake is falling behind in his schoolwork, so he has to do his biology paper on the smallpox virus. When Mitty Blake finds an old book on variola major or smallpox, he finds an envelope with 100 year old scabs from the 1904 Boston smallpox epidemic.Accidentally, Mitty gets the dust of them in his system. After realizing that he could have the monster of smallpox, he emails main biological research centers and they get forwarded to the FBI, CDC and maybe a terrorist organization. Susan B. Cooney touches on three main points of terrorism, the fear of terrorism after 9/11, the FBI s ability to track individuals and bioterrorism. After September 11th, America grouped up together like never before to protect itself with the rumor of other attacks on the way. Many times Blake thinks about his virus infecting others which always leads him to remember the September 11th attack on America. Sadly, when something bad happens, one gets put to ... As Derek says on page 138, But here s my guess: what a terrorist could do is get hold of Mitty. He gets sick and they re golden. They launch the first successful bioterrorist attack on America. What Derek is saying is that if a terrorist got hold of a deadly virus that people aren t vaccinated for, they can launch an epidemic that could wipe out a country. What makes smallpox perfect for terrorists is that it hasn t been a thing since the 70 s. This means that people are not currently vaccinated and would never guess that they have it. • 6. Theme Of Hesitancy In Hamlet Rebecca Kallios 12/15/17 Final Essays Topic A. Hamlet s theme of hesitancy and action In William Shakespeare s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, the protagonist, Prince Hamlet, is summoned by the ghost of his father to seek revenge for his murder. Hamlet struggles to avenge his father s death as he is a complex character that is more analytical and introspective, which is apparent through the first person narrated soliloquys. As the play progresses, Hamlet s inability to act adds a great weight and pressure upon his shoulders as he wants to do right by his father as a noble son, yet he struggles to follow through. Eventually, Hamlet does kill Claudius but as a result of his hesitancy several additional lives are lost. In the revenge tragedy Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, William Shakespeare develops the theme of hesitancy through Hamlet s primary dilemma of avenging his father s murder. When Hamlet is first summoned by the ghost to kill Claudius, Hamlet seems eager and determined. When the ghost calls for him to, Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder (I.v.25), Hamlet exclaims, Haste me to know t, that I, with wings as swift/As meditation or the thoughts of love/May sweep to my revenge (I.v.29 31). When Hamlet talks to the ghost, he initially seems determined and ready to act, but with time to think Hamlet loses his motivation. Hamlet questions whether the ghost is truly his father s spirit. The importance of religion to Hamlet is apparent in his hesitation over the authenticity of the ghost. Protestants at this time, such as Hamlet, questioned the reality of ghosts as they believed they were the devil in disguise. In his Act II, scene II soliloquy, Hamlet expresses his concern over the reality of the ghost when he states, ...The spirit that I have seen/May be the devil: and the devil hath power/T assume a pleasing shape (II.ii.540 42). The power of God delays Hamlet s action, as he doesn t want to unjustly kill a person. Another cause for Hamlet s delay is that he wants proof of Claudius s guilt. Hamlet is distraught over the fact that his mother remarried so soon following her husband s death, especially to her husband s brother. In the Act I, scene II soliloquy, Hamlet states that ... • 7. Phoenix Jackson Thesis Phoenix Jackson The story A Worn Path, by Eudora Welty tells the story of a woman named Phoenix Jackson, who lives in Natchez Mississippi. Phoenix has a grandson that she cares for that has swallowed a chemical called lye, that was in many households back when Welty wrote this story. Lye poisoning was common in rural areas. Welty is writing about this problem the hardship Phoenix Jackson went through to receive medical treatment at that time. Without the name Phoenix Jackson and the characteristics, she possesses there is no way she could overcome the obstacles that stood in her way. With the first name of Phoenix, Ms. Welty is showing the symbol of a Greek mythological bird that could live to be one hundred to one thousand years. The old phoenix dies in a pile of ashes, much like the ashes used to make lye, only to reemerge a new magnificent, colorful bird, to live another cycle of life (Wikipedia). Much like the bird, Phoenix Jackson has a red rag around her head, a wrinkled face with yellow illuminating skin, ringlets hanging from her hair, a striped dress, and a bleached sugar sack apron (Welty). In addition, similar, her age, like the bird, Phoenix is aged but wise, likely close to one hundred years, reemerges back to life once she received the medicine her grandson needed. • 10. The Genre Of Matthew 23 Matthew 23:1 12 #1 The Genre The genre of Matthew, one of four Gospels and narrative. #2 Generic or Intrinsic conception The generic concept of Matthew 23:1 12 is that Jesus warns the crowds and disciples against Pharisees and Scribes who do not practice what they teach, do not serve their people, but enjoy being exalted. #3 Observations Literary: o In Matthew 23:1 12, the literary feature I found is explanation/analysis, interchange, and contrast. Jesus presents an idea, which is not doing what the Pharisees and Scribes are doing. He explains this idea by providing examples of what they do in verses 5 7. The author also uses interchange because the focus in verses 1 7 is on the Pharisees and the Scribes and what they do. However, from verses 8 12, Jesus is focusing on the multitude and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I once heard that one of Christian member misunderstood verse 9 in this passage. He took it literally and decided not to call his earthly father his father because everyone is a brother in Christ. He believed that his true father is only the Father in heaven. However, this misinterpretation comes because of the lack of cultural understanding. Father was used to recognize someone in a high title, not a physical father. Another misinterpretation can be towards our spiritual leaders. Christians can force spiritual leaders to humble themselves because they must serve their congregation first. Also, heavier judgments and expectations can be made upon spiritual leaders because they are not to exalt themselves. A proper interpretation can come by looking through the historical and cultural lens. Jesus is not teaching people to deny their physical parents or judge spiritual leaders. He is rebuking the inconsistencies of the Pharisees and Scribes. They are being hypocrites, falsely leading his people. Therefore, he is teaching the true teacher and a father, which is in ... Teton Dam Failure Ethical Case Study of the Teton Dam Failure The collapse of Teton Dam on June 5th 1976 marked one of the greatest civil engineering disasters in modern US history because of the utter lack of ethics that went into the execution of project. The dam failure resulted in the deaths of 14 humans, over 13000 livestock, destroyed over 700 homes, 250 businesses, and damaged another 3000 homes. Despite the mercifully low number of human deaths, this was an accident that never should have occurred in the first place. No real concern was given to this fact as investigations to building the dam continued. Geologically, the site was covered in rather porous volcanic rock formations such as basalt, rhyolite, and tuff that formed from the ashes of a Yellowstone supereruption 2.1 million years ago. Porous material is not ideal for dam formation. In addition, there were significant fissures in the bedrocks. Those same soldiers are forgotten, or expected to be proud of the things that they did and experienced that will haunt them for the rest of their life. In this case, we must deal with the lack of capacity by addressing the bottleneck. One important question: What resource should be the bottleneck? Typically, this will be the resource that is the most expensive (e.g. automated cutting machine), most difficult to acquire (e.g. comes in large chucks, has long lead times), most highly trained (e.g. brain surgeons), etc. For Quinte, this is clearly the MRI machine itself. Given the MRI should be the bottleneck; the other resources must have protective capacity. This means adding enough of everything with cycle times longer than the MRI machine for sure an extra MR technician. The role of non bottlenecks is to protect the ability of the bottleneck to operate at full utilization. However, in this situation, there is also a complicating requirement for quick response under highly variable conditions. This means that we want the MRI machine to have some ... The cause of abortion could simply be a birth control failure, from rape or incest, inability to take care of the child, or in most cases, pressure from others. Whatever the case may be, these women have chosen to get rid of their child, without thinking of the consequences after it is done. After a mother chooses to abort her baby, she will be greatly affected psychologically and could possibly change her and her future family s life forever. Before the procedure is done, the mother of the child is positive about her decision, unaware of the mental experiences she will be going through. Nonetheless, after the operation is done, the mother will experience personal shame that could result in repressed grief, causing serious problems. • 23. Panopticism In Nineteen Eighty-Four And Frankenstein Panopticism is a social theory named after the panopticon , which was originally developed by the French philosopher, Michel Foucault. Panopticon was first mentioned in his book, Discipline and Punish. In his book, he refers panopticon to an experimental laboratory of power in which behaviour could be modified. Foucault considered panopticon as a symbol of the disciplinary society of surveillance (Panopticism). In the two novels, Nineteen Eighty Four and Frankenstein, panopticism is an element shown greatly. Though these two novels have many differences, this similarity shared between the two is equally important. Panopticism is the main element of the novel Nineteen Eighty Four. In the novel, it shows the dystopian life where the government, or the Party has all the power, and they carefully monitor their citizens 24/7 with the use of telescreens, which is a television and a security camera (Orwell 5). The Party monitors the inner party and outer party only because they are what is important, unlike the proles whom the Party does not monitor at all. Winston mentions numerous times If there is hope it lies in the proles (Orwell 80). The proles take up 85% of the population of Oceania, therefore if there were to be a revolution the proles could destroy the Party. In the novel Frankenstein, panopticism is shown immediately when the monster is created. The monster has a prominent effect over Frankenstein and his actions. Frankenstein is terrified of the monster and what he could potentially do to him and his family, he knows his creation is much larger and stronger than he is. Although, the monster knows without Frankenstein the wish for him to have a mate would be gone. Throughout the novel, the monster is always steps behind Frankenstein, following him everywhere (Shelley 120). The monster is continuously stating his dominance over Frankenstein, in one scene the monster says to Frankenstein You are my creator; but I am your master; obey! (Shelley 120). Immigrants and Social Control Theory For years, society has attempted to come up with reasons as to why immigrants are involved in criminal activity at a higher rate than native born Americans. Some even speculate it is because immigrants tend to establish themselves in disorganized neighborhoods that are characterized by cultural, social or biological differences which are all often associated with crime. This is where the social theory comes in to play and approaches this relationship in a different way. Developed in 1969 by Travis Hirschi, social control theory attempts to answer the ultimate question of why we all do not commit crimes. Hirschi suggests that individuals who have a strong and flexible bond to society will be far less likely to engage in criminal activities or delinquent behaviors, whereas those who have weak bonds will. In other words, the health of a group is determined by how well all the members of that group conform to the group s norms. This essay will discuss goal 13 take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts , along with its five targets. Are the Targets Truly Measurable? The most concretely measureable target under SDG 13 is 13.a. A deadline for this target is clearly stated along with the funds and specific parties needed to create a global impact. One will be able to identify progress, or lack of, by 2020. Target 13.b is unspecified and extremely vague, not indicating effective strategies for its measurability. LDC s often contribute least to climate change yet are expected to suffer the greatest, there is no specific source in this target to aid these countries in raising their planning capacities. Target 13.1 is vague making it difficult to assess if a country perhaps has not achieved this target, it only focuses on extreme events when developing resilience and adaptive capacity to gradual shifts in climate change is crucial (ICSU, 2015). The target would need further specification and a timeframe. Target 13.2 can be measured as one can identify if and when climate change protocols are implemented into a nations policies and whether or not they are put into effect, however focus on only the national level is too narrow as mitigation policies can be used on different scales such as ... Humans have learned over time to compensate for negative experiences in life through the interactions of the mind, the body, and the brain. The ways in which they interact are exemplified by the biological systems highlighted in the essays by Oliver Sacks, Daniel Gilbert, and Martha Stout. In The Mind s Eye, Sacks emphasizes that the trauma of losing one s vision often triggers the system of the mind s eye to improve perception beyond sight, by means of neural plasticity and language. He is implying that many people who lose their vision have described an almost automatic improvement in their other senses, as well as mental visualization mediated by language. Essentially, her patients separated their minds from their bodies, but this was a subconscious disconnection their minds did not inform them of what was happening in the process of dissociation. Stout would therefore agree with Sacks that the improved perception by the mind s eye in blind people must occur subconsciously, much like how individuals experience divided consciousness outside of their awareness. If the mind s eye could be controlled, for instance, then humans would presumably have the capacity to drastically improve their mental visualization even without the loss of vision. • 36. Monologue In The Siree The use of monologue in this poem shapes a paradoxical theme, which makes the siren s motivation blurry. In the context, the poem uses the word song three times in the first lines of three stanzas. The beginning stanzas are monologues of the siren. In the context, the song appears to be irresistibly attractive to the men, that it makes men jump over the board even if they see where they are heading to is scattered with corpses. The footnote of the poem has clarified that this song is chanted by the siren, and it leads to the demise of the sailors. Hence, it is reasonable to presume that the siren produces songs to lure the sailors, and sailors will get killed afterward. However, the poem spends 5 out of 9 stanzas stating that the siren as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From my perspective, using these two elements creates a hasty tone so that the siren s dire need of salvation is displayed in a pressing manner. For example, in the 7th and 8th stanza, to you and only respectively appear twice and three times. The siren here addresses the sailor as you , and she extensively repeats the words, as if she sees the sailor as a savior. It can be implied that the siren is so desperate that she attempts to address the importance of the sailor. Also, the siren makes such desperate call by repeating the importance and uniqueness of the sailor over and over again via such anaphora so that she presumes the sailor can be persuaded. The anaphora here no doubt expresses the eagerness that the siren holds in attempts to reach the sailor. Thus, the siren makes such hasty tone by stressing the idea that the sailors are metaphorically the only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Analysis Of Frances Willard And Walt Whitman Essay Frances Willard and Walt Whitman are two significant nineteenth century American figures. Although Willard and Whitman are famous for different reasons, they do have one characteristic in common: they have both been accused of being homosexuals. However, most people do not know this because it is not put in history textbooks or taught in the classroom, for good reason. Public school students should not learn about Willard and Whitman s homosexuality through their textbooks and teachers because it does not affect the significance of what these two Americans had accomplished. Not only does it not affect their importance in United States history, but it also cannot be proven. Teaching public school students that Willard and Whitman were homosexuals would be disrespectful to the brave and inspiring acts they have made towards the history of America. Frances Willard was an American educator, temperance reformer, and women s advocate. She taught at a public school, was the president of the Evanston College for Ladies, and became dean of women at Northwestern University. After Willard relinquished her career as an educator she became a reformer in the Temperance Movement. The Temperance Movement was the social movement against the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Willard took on the duty of trying to stop alcohol consumption in the United States. She did this without pay for many years and became the secretary of the Chicago Woman s Christian Temperance Union. While working ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Negative Effects Of Technology On Education In our world, technology has marked its own impact in our society. Since the birth of the digital age, technology has only advanced and has lessened many difficulties previously imposed on earlier centuries. Whether noticeable or not, technology is connected to every single action and transaction in our world today. Mechanics, purchasing, communications, agriculture, and education are few fields where technology have been implemented in. Technology has awarded consumers the opportunity to purchase items from any location, allows for the exchange of information through individuals, and led to productivity and accuracy in the agricultural field. However, the use of technology has been misunderstood in its relationship with education. Opponents of technology in terms education can state that it is the primary cause that literacy rates have decreased in recent years, since technology can distract from literacy development or academic engagement. The question arises is technology detrimental to literacy development and engagement or is it beneficial. Should technology and the digital age be reevaluated in its effectiveness in literacy development and academic engagement? Absolutely, technology should be reevaluated in effectiveness in literacy development due to the fact it provides more opportunities then barriers. When evaluating ideas, we should look at the pros and the cons; and if the pros outweighs the cons the ideas should be accepted as the influential. Technology has made literacy development more adaptable, led to the development of new literacy skills such as critical thinking and research skills, while providing personal instruction. A benefit of technology in literacy development is that it can reach students with learning disabilities or challenges than traditional texts. Students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, or ADHD are not able to sit down over a long period of time and read a traditional text due to challenges imposed. To properly gain an understanding of a text time must be spent with the existing knowledge of some words. Students or persons in general with dyslexia are unable to understand words we common take for granted students with ADHD are unable to stay focus over a long ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Nutrient Pollution In Our Waterways Nutrient Pollution in Our Waterways Causes, Impacts and Solutions James Gracie University of Maryland University College Environmental Change and Sustainability NSCI 362 Professor Dennis Whitford June 28, 2015 Nutrient pollution is responsible for hundreds of dead zones across the world s oceans lakes and estuaries, and the number and size of them is growing. Many of these dead zones cover thousands of square miles where almost nothing lives (National Science Foundation, n.d., Worldwide Dead Zones section, para. 1). Nutrient pollution, also known as eutrophication occurs when nutrients, most commonly nitrogen and phosphorus, from industrial, agricultural, residential, and airborne sources enter the water in high concentrations. This process results in water that is too rich in nutrients. This in turn causes a chain of events that can cause widespread ecological damage to both aquatic ecosystems. In order to reduce nutrient pollution to sustainable levels and prevent a manmade ecological disaster, mankind must stem the flow of nutrients into our waterways by regulating the sources that contribute to it. To address the problem of eutrophication, the causes must first be understood. Most causes of eutrophication are well known and documented. One of the largest source contributors to the problem of eutrophication worldwide is the burning of fossil fuels, which releases nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere which are later deposited onto the ground and in ... Throughout the article Moyers explains the loss of interest but also shows the reader the subject is crucial for societies to progress. He uses deeper meanings to further understand the importance of history as well as expressing the reasons he thinks cultures have lost interest past events. The author also mentions that although people find no relations to history in today s world, there are conflicts that can resemble current problems. When people hear the word terrorism we immediately think of ISIS or possibly recall the 9/11 attacks.
