The Decision Tree Algorithms And Grows The Tree By...
This is a pedagogical algorithm, which extracts the rules in the form of decision trees. This is similar
to most of the decision tree algorithms and grows the tree by recursive partitioning. At every step it
stores a queue of leaves that can be further expanded to sub trees and this process is repeated until a
stopping condition is met. Traditional decision trees methods have a limited number of training
observations. So they only have fewer number of observations to decide upon the split and leaf node
class labels but on the other hand, Trepan re labels the original observations to the classifications made
by the network. And the relabeled data will be used for the tree growing process. Additionally it can
also add extra data points by mimicking the behavior of the network. It uses the network as an oracle
to answer the classification queries about the newly generated data points. This way it can make sure
that whenever a split node or leaf node class decision is made there are at least S_(min ) number of
data points. Where S_(min )is a user specified number. Whenever we generate new data points at any
particular node, we have to make sure that they satisfy all the constraints from root to the current
node. One of the approach to distribute the data points over a network is to employ uniform
distribution, but Trepan takes into account the distribution of data i.e. at each node it estimates the
marginal distribution of data. If the data at the input is continuous then it

Mental Health Professionals
After reading the case study, it has cast doubt in the reader s mind about mental health professionals.
Are they really helping the mentally ill or are they just doing a job for financial gain? The mental
health professionals in those institutions did not recognize that these patients were not mentally ill; but
the mentally ill residents observed that they were all sane. This example is the reason why excuses
have no place in medicine, and that most mental health professionals do not give an in depth
evaluation of a person or they just look for symptoms that are easily recognizable to suit given
disorder. Mental health professionals should provide evidence for detecting or diagnosing a mental
illness because mentally illness individuals often have several mental illnesses that co occur which
makes it very hard for medical professionals to diagnosed.
Although, both medical doctors and psychiatrists are looking for changes within an individual over
time; and both will match the symptoms they find with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For example, in some cultures, if a person claims to be hearing voices they may be regarded as
someone with spiritual capabilities, whereas in our culture if someone claims to be hearing voices we
would suspect that they have a serious mental disorder. The consequences of mistakes made by
psychiatric diagnosis are that many conditions are believed to be permanent, so once an individual
receives a diagnosis, it can be difficult for them to be regarded as well again. For example, most
people believe that a person who has had a schizophrenic episode (they claimed to hear voices or they
reported delusions) will inevitably have further relapses. The truth is that about 25 percent of people
who have a schizophrenic episode recover and never have another

Elements Of The Law Of Negligence
In our judgement the law is clear. The ingredients of the offence have been clearly defined, and the
principles decided in the House of Lords in Adomako . They involve no uncertainty. The hypothetical
citizen, seeking to know his his position, would be advised that, assuming he owed a duty of care to
the deceased which he had negligently broken, and that death resulted, he would be liable to
conviction for manslaughter if, on the available evidence, the jury was satisfied that his negligence
was gross. Per Judge LJ R. v. Misra and Srivastava [2004] EWCA Crim 2375 para 64 (in the Court of
Appeal Criminal Division) In light of the above comments, consider the elements of the offence of
Gross Negligence Manslaughter and, referring to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lord Mackay LC, when considering the case of Adomako, said that the ordinary principles of law of
negligence apply to ascertain whether or not D has been in breach of a duty of care towards the victim
. By looking at the above statement, it is clear that those same principles should apply in determining
these people to whom a duty of care is owed. These principles can be found in the leading negligence
case of Donoghue v Stevenson (1932). In this case, Lord Atkin in the House of Lords said you must
take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would be likely to
injure your neighbour (...) persons who are closely and directly affected by my act that I ought
reasonably to have them in contemplation as being so affected when I am directing my mind to the
acts or omissions which are called into question . It can be argued that this goes much further than the
traditional duty situations. If this examination is correct, then this form of manslaughter has certainly a
very wide scope. Nevertheless, the principles of criminal and civil law do not always go well together.
This is demonstrated by the case of Wacker (2003), which involved the bodies of 58 illegal
immigrants and two survivors which were found in a lorry at Dover. The D was convicted of 58
counts of manslaughter by gross negligence

Kant s Categorical Imperative For The Practice Of Modern...
Hamza Rafique
15 June 2014
Should Kant s categorical imperative be supported in the practice of modern medicine?
Introduction
Immanuel Kant saw the importance of autonomy long before the field of medicine was as advanced as
it is now through the second formulation of his categorical imperative: Act in such a way that you treat
humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an
end, but always at the same time as an end . Kant recognises that it is autonomy that allows for self
actualisation and the manifestation of one s identity through having the capacity to make self governed
choices. Therefore autonomy factor that gives humans the duty to treat each other as ends and to
violate the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kant provides us with these ethical guidelines however there are cases in medicine which illustrate
that a physician s expertise allows him to see that following a patient s autonomous decision may lead
to further suffering causing the health professional to take a paternalistic course of action. This ethical
problem has lead me to investigate whether medical practice should uphold Kant s categorical
imperative, and if not where should we search for a way forward? I intend to analyse Kant s ethics to
see where its strengths and weaknesses lie when applied to the medical field before exploring other
ethical theories in an attempt to find the most suitable means of decision making in medicine. I will
use case studies to illustrate the point that Kant s ethics, although perfect for an ideal world, does not
work in the medical field, nor does a utilitarian approach. This leads us toward an intuitionist stance in
order to keep the benefits of the categorical imperative offers us while maintaining applicability to
medicine.
How could the categorical imperative work in medicine?
The categorical imperative does have strength in its principled and high minded nature that can be
condensed down into the following three formulations:
Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a
universal law without contradiction.
Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in

The Ready to Eat Breakfast Cereal Industry in 1994
(A)
1
All is not well in the land of Tony the Tiger.
In early 1994, the ready to eat (RTE) breakfast cereal industry had reached a critical turning point in
its evolution. In an industry historically characterized by stability and above average profitability,
slowing demand growth and a surge in private label sales threatened to undermine the dominant
positions of the Big Three: Kellogg, General Mills, and Philip Morris. The 1993 year end statistics
showed that industry sales growth had slowed to under 2%, while private labels had topped
5% market share by sales and 9% by volume for the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vitamin fortification, which first appeared during the second World War, presweetening, which gained
wide popularity in the 1950s, and the surge of interest in granola and natural cereals in the 1970s and
80s fueled this growth. By 1993, the
U.S. market consumed 2.82 billion pounds of cereal, grossing nearly $8 billion in sales for breakfast
cereal manufacturers.
The RTE cereal industry had historically been one of the most concentrated of all U.S. industries, and
firm market shares showed great persistence (see Exhibit 1). The largest cereal manufacturers were
extremely profitable, routinely posting ROAs for their cereal divisions in the 15 30% range. However,
the profitability of the industry attracted no significant entry, and the industry continued to become
more concentrated. As a result, in 1972 the Federal Trade Commission filed a major antitrust suit
against Kellogg, General Mills, and General Foods (then the maker of the Post line). The FTC argued
that the leading RTE cereal manufacturers had jointly monopolized the RTE cereal market. The FTC
case was based on the fact that the industry was concentrated and highly profitable, and not on
specific actions that the firms might have undertaken to achieve this. Nonetheless, it became clear that
the FTC believed that the firms had effectively raised

The Characters Of A Monster In William Shakespeare s Titus...
In William Shakespeare s Titus Andronicus the characters Aaron, Tamora, Demetrius, and Chiron are
considered monstrous due to their actions that lead up to the tragic ending of the play. Jeffrey Jerome
Cohen s idea of characteristics that a monster possesse would also classify these four characters as a
monster. Although Tamora, Aaron, Demetrius, and Chiron are the most monstrous characters of the
play, none of the other characters are considered innocent because they all contribute to the terrible
ending. Cohen states in his essay Monster Culture (Seven Theses) a monster is manipulative and never
exactly dies, these characteristics are seen in Aaron. After informing Titus about some information
about sparing the life of his two sons Aaron says to himself, If that be called deceit, I will be honest
and never whilst I live deceive men so, (3.1 192 193). Aaron has just convinced Titus to chop off his
hands in exchange for sparing the lives of his two sons, but his two sons are already dead and have
their heads chopped off. While Demetrius and Chiron are arguing Aaron suggests, Single you thither
then this dainty doe, and strike her home by force, if not by words. This way, or not at all, stand you in
hope... The woods are ruthless, dreadful, deaf, and dull. There speak and strike, brave boys, and take
your turns. There serve your lust, shadowed by heaven s eyes, and revel in Lavinia s treasury, (2.1 124

Examples Of Belonging In The Holocaust
Maya Al Saeed Belonging in the Holocaust Do you feel like you belong if you re with your family
and/or friends? Most people who lived through the Holocaust were with their families and friends
because it made them feel like they belong together. The feeling of belonging during the Holocaust
was what many people used to create hope and belonging, like in the book Night, The boy in the
Striped Pajamas, and Heros of the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a hard time for many people,
belonging is something many used to cope with the situation. If you re with your family you feel like

quote is With its high refresh rate and low latency, most people shouldn t experience motion sickness
in theory. What it is saying is that you won t get motion sickness from playing on a VR system. The
final quote from Tom s guide is Filmmakers have begun to experiment with the Oculus Rift to make
an audience member feel like he or she is part of the film. Basically, the Oculus Rift virtual reality
headset will not just do games, but also TV shows and movies once they are able to. In conclusion,
virtual reality can be very helpful for most kinds of entertainment.

Similarities And Differences Between The Zero And...
Kurt Vonnegut s novel Slaughterhouse 5 (1969) and Jess Walters novel The Zero (2006) share a series
of similarities not only in the formal aspects of the novel but also in their contents. Both authors create
a fictional narrative in order to present their experiences of two of the most traumatic events related to
the contemporary history of the United States: the participation of the United States in the Second
World War and the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11. Thus, both works can be seen as attempts to
re write reality after a traumatic experience.
First of all, both authors utilize autobiographical materials for their novels. In Slaughterhouse 5,
Vonnegut, like Billy Pilgrim, was an American soldier during World War II that was prisoned ... Show

In Slaughterhouse 5, as Rigney signals, Billy goes on to become a fairly successful businessman but
finally has a nervous breakdown that makes him become unstuck in time such that all past and future
moments in his life are always simultaneously present (Rigney 14). Nevertheless, it is important to
notice that the sense of fragmentation is more present in The Zero because from the very beginning,
the first sentence initiates the pattern of narrative interruption due to it is already fragmented: the first
five words do not become meaningful until five lines afterwards. If we apply this to a larger scale, the
same happens with a significant amount of scenes where the ending is not concluded but interrupted.
It is the case, for example, of the first sentence, whose ending is uncompleted: Mrs. Lubach opened
her mouth to answer but (Walter 7); and the next line starts another scene where Remy is at the
hospital waiting to be attended. Another example can be found some scenes afterwards, where the
sentence does not reveal what Remy found: Remy reaching for the falling glass and finding (Walter
22). For this reason, these breaks represent leaps in time or space that simulate the dissociative
episodes of the textbook PTSD with which Remy s psychiatrist diagnoses him after 9/11 (194) (Miller

Colonial Virginia Compare And Contrast
Massachusetts and Virginia, Different Beginnings With the colonization of the New World came
financial, religious, and strategic opportunities. England answered this call in various ways as British
colonies began with certain interests in mind. Massachusetts and Virginia, besides being started with
royal charters, were planted in separate locations, with unique resources, and by Englishmen with
entirely different intentions.
The beginning of two unique early American colonies starts with two very different charters. Virginia
began in 1606 as the Virginia Company; a combination of the London and Plymouth Companies. The
intent was to establish a working colony to extract riches from the New World in the form of natural
resources. The strongly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slaves cost around three times as much to purchase as indentured servants. With a vastly shortened
life span in Virginia and the availability of indentures, slavery made little economic sense. Why would
a plantation owner pay for a lifetime of work he would never receive?
By contrast, Massachusetts Puritans objected to slavery on moral grounds, and strove to protect their
social enclaves and towns from any outsiders. Not only would slaves prove a changing force in New
England, they would disrupt the carefully crafted structure of free labor and the local church/town
system.
Early Virginia and Massachusetts differed greatly in their respective political positions as well. During
the early 1620s, Virginia remained unprofitable in the eyes of stockholders in Britain. In 1624 King
James I dissolved the London Company and Virginia became a royal colony. With the collapse of the
monarchy in Britain beginning in 1649, Virginia became a refuge for English Cavaliers. Virginian
governor William Berkeley and the Virginia Assembly even supported Charles II in opposition to the

Literature Review On The Phonics
Literature Review
The Debate
There are a million adults who cannot read, one in six Londoners is functionally illiterate and people
who cannot read or write are excluded from opportunities and may eventually become alienated and
turn to crime (Johnson 2010, cited by Gross 2010). Gross (2010) expresses her concern and believes it
is not where the children live, it is how they were taught to read and how they were properly
motivated to learn to read. She endorses the synthetic systematic phonics approach as opposed to that
of the whole word approach and believes we must place our focus on reading as it is indispensable.
Phonics advocates have been arguing that in order for children to learn to read, they need to have an
explicit instruction in the rules of printed text in order to read properly. The phonics approach has been
described as bottom up as it teaches the children to decode text and then the meaning and
understanding will follow while the whole word approach is described as top down, as the children
depend on the pictures within the book, form hypothesis and make predictions of the words with the
text of the book being read (Wren, 2003).
Gross (2010) state that children should systematically be taught to read through phonics and not by
memorising whole words ; by the late 1970 s teachers were no longer fond of that approach as it was
not working because children were still struggling to read, it was dull and repetitive and new words
were introduced at a

The Dust Bowl During The Great Plains Region
The dust bowl was a devastating time in the United States history that occurred during the 1930s,
caused by atypically high temperatures, perpetual drought and new farming methods. Vigorous winds
disturbed the topsoil, resulting in overwhelming dust storms which destroyed an immense amount of
farms, in upwards of 100,000. These storms devastated the source of income for the farmers affected.
The dust bowl was located in the Great Plains region, which includes the states of Oklahoma, Kansas,
and Northern Texas. Thousands of workers were faced with an impasse, become a laborer, doing
mindless work for miniscule wages, or move away and search for better work. (San José State
University) The people brought to these decisions that chose to ... Show more content on

New York City And Los Angeles
Being on opposite sides of the country, New York City and Los Angeles are two very similar, yet two
very different cities. Each city has its own ambience and atmosphere. People take pleasure in one of
them based on their personal preference and things available to them at each location. New York City
and Los Angeles are easily compared and contrasted based upon their weather, jobs, and style of
living.
New York City has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Each season brings upon different
weather. The spring season in NYC is very pleasant. The temperatures can range from 42 to 62
degrees Fahrenheit depending on the winter before. New York City s summer season is usually
steaming hot, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees in the months of June, July, and August. When
fall rolls around, the temperatures start dropping. The fall season is full of beautiful colors and sights,
with temperatures ringing in anywhere from 50 to 70 degrees. The dreaded winter season is the
coldest of them all with temperatures dipping below freezing and sometimes below zero (Weather
Facts New York City).
However, Los Angeles weather can be very different. With Los Angeles being in Southern California,
it does not have many weather changes throughout the year. Most of the time, Los Angeles sees sunny
skies and temperatures at 75 degrees. Southern California s climate has often been described as perfect
(DISCOVER LOS ANGELES).

The Problem Of Illegal Street Racing
Ever since the first automobile was created, Americans have been obsessed with speed. Illegal street
racing became popular in the 1950s with the evolution of the motor vehicle. In the 50s and 70s,
Hollywood romanticized the activity in movies like Rebel Without a Cause and American Graffiti.
(Petrocelli, 2007) The need for speed grew as vehicles became more powerful and faster. But, speed
and racing did not come without great consequence. Statistics show in 1999 street racing involved
deaths, but was not a giant issue at the time.
In 1999, the Florida Department of Highway and Safety for Motor Vehicles reported 28 accidents
related to illegal street racing, with 2 fatalities and 27 injuries. In 2000, the agency reported 39 racing

Yes, street racing was happening, but not as often. The races were taken to a secluded area, on a road
that was less travelled, and typically late hours of the night. Street racing was not a big problem in
Florida, due having 4 legal NHRA style drag strips at the time, Orlando Speed World, Bradenton
Motorsports Park, Gainesville Raceway, and Moroso Motorsports Park. The drag strips conducted test
and tune nights, which is typically twice a week, allowing drivers to race their friends or whoever. The
drag strips also occasionally held a fun day Sunday, which the racing would last all day. But, after the
release of Fast and the Furious , drag racing became a double edge sword. It began happening on the
drag strip and on the street.
A new subculture was born, Underground Street Racing! Street racing was happening anytime
anywhere, did not matter if it was in mid day traffic or on a neighborhood road. Street racers did not
care who they were putting in danger. People were dying left and right from the now iconic street
racing. Law enforcement became fed up, and began cracking down on street racers. Arrests were
being made for the crime of street racing, and cars were being impounded. Florida now has 13 drag
strips throughout the state to help detour street racing.
Based on my experience in Florida law enforcement of 5 years, 4 of which was a traffic unit officer.
Florida alone has very strict laws regarding street racing. First time offense can lead to

Umass Minuteman Athletic Team Case Study

What is usually seen to the common sports fan as a perfect situation for college basketball craziness is

I don t think the athletic department does a great job marketing the games to the students, he
explained.
I feel like, a lot of times, students don t even know that there s games, and I feel like if students did
know that there were games, maybe some more people would show up.
But is it just a matter of fact that, in the eyes of the students, there are simply better alternatives to
going to a UMass game on any day of the week. Whether it s staying in to study, going out on

Finding Emergency Housing After A Fight Essay
From trying to find a place to get her mother in law s hair permed to having to find emergency
housing after a fight erupted between two seniors (sisters, no less) over dentures to spending
Christmas in the emergency room instead of the living room, Gail s firsthand experience shows how
sticky it can get when you are in charge of your parents.
The book is divided into 60 vignettes followed by questions, including Surviving the Annual Family
Reunion, To Tube or Not to Tube, That Is the Question, and When I Will Means I Won t.
Gail, who also speaks and holds workshops on aging, says the questions get people thinking about
their own situations.
One problem is most people think they are going to just up and die. That s like 10 percent of people
now, she says. This means that most of us will end up needing care provided by others at some point,
like it or not. It s the best of all worlds when you are willing to broach it before the crisis, Gail says.
What it brings up if you wait is more fear. Death is undergirding everything to talk about.
Like Amy, Gail says a meeting is best. The first thing is to bring family together after a letter or a
phone call to tell them it s time to talk about end of life issues. She also suggests using a facilitator,
like a geriatric care manager, nurse or social worker who will cover the basics because, sometimes,
parents will refuse to talk.
And siblings may not be on the same page. During these emotional times, Having ground

The Catholic Church And The Church
The Catholic Church as we know it is much different than that of the past. Love, acceptance,
forgiveness, giving, and tradition are all things that come to mind when the words Catholic Church are
heard. If one were to ask those living in the 1400 1800s what comes to mind when thinking about the
Catholic Church, their answer would have been very different. With the exception of a few countries,
there is a separation of the church and state in todays government. In our current state of government,
the church has no say in the justice system or decisions made by the government. There is no priest or
king who rules over the country or attends government meetings. In early Europe, this was not the
case. The Catholic Church had great influence on the government. The church actually was the
government in some countries who operated under a theocratic ruling. With God being the ultimate
ruler, the Priest or King was the next in power. The royals are supposedly Gods chosen ones. They are
the closest to him and everyone else is below them. The church had power over the military, who had
access to education, individuals socioeconomic class, the laws, and almost anything else one could
think of.1 The ultimate goal of the church was to convert anyone who was not Christian into a
Christian as a way of gaining power. The inquisition ordered conquistadores to find and conquer lands
which could be used to cultivate Spanish wealth and spread Catholicism.2 In this sense, the church s

Bart Janssen Summary
In this article Bart Jansen presents a highly objective viewpoint about how the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) has begun regulating drone operations across the nation. Commercial and
personal drone use has been on the rise over the past decade, with the military being among the first to
begin using remotely piloted aircrafts (RPA). I believe that the FAA is completely going in the right
direction with the regulations that are being set in place. As an active duty aviator, I can account
multiple instances where drone sightings abnormally close to or on military bases have led to elevated
advisories for flight operations. I can only assume that busy commercial airports have to take even
greater precautions after sightings of low,

Information Processing Model Of Memory
(1) In your own words, describe the three major components of the Information Processing Model of
memory: Sensory Memory, Short term Memory, and Long term Memory.
The three major components of the Information Processing Model of memory work, in a way, as a
system. First, when sensory information from your sensory system gets encoded, it is considered
sensory memory; lasting about a second. The sensory information is then converted into short term
memory if and only if the individual is paying attention; lasting about as long as attention is held. If
the information is repeated/thought about enough, it will become long term memory; basically etching
itself across your cerebral cortex. That isn t to say that all long term memories are stored

With the final note of the song I was proud of how good I had played my first unplanned solo. I set my
Tenor Saxophone to the side and listened to the 5th Grade cheer at the beautiful music that had been
played for them. That s what I would be saying if everything had gone to plan, but instead me, myself,
and I had decided to make everything go down the drain for my first unplanned solo in band. This
story has no real resolution for the teary eyed 6th grade me sitting in her section holding her
instrument shamefully.
It all began on a not so warm afternoon in March. After leaving one of my favorite classes, Science
and I rushed to 5th hour Band class to put my Tenor Sax together. I heard the talk of who was better at
one subject or better at playing their saxophone (and the normal ear piercing playing) of Alto Sax
players in the band storage room. Rolling my eyes a little and giving a small laugh to the small (yet
loud) talk, I headed to my seat in between two other Tenor Sax players named Brogan and Austin. Our
band director, Mr. Zielinski walked into the band room, giving the usual instructions about being quiet

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Aops
In most of the AOPs a combination of these oxidation effects occur. In Fenton´s reagent for example;
Fe(II) is used as a catalyst, in the process Fe(II) is brought to the other oxidation state of Fe(III), in
this process OH* radicals are formed that are able to completely mineralize organic compounds. It is
clear from the standard redox potential data that hydroxyl radical is the strongest known oxidant (2.06
V), second to fluorine (2.23 V) (Table 1). Therefore, the complete mineralization of most of the
organic matters is possible, when the hydroxyl radicals are the main oxidizing species in the solution.
This is one of the major advantages of AOPs, since other chemical oxidation processes mostly lead to
partial oxidation of the target compounds, ant thus, the generation of new hazardous compounds is
possible. The other advantage of AOPs is the generation of neglible amounts of residues and their
applicability, in case of very low ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use of ultrasound technology is shown to be very promising for the degradation of persistent
organic compounds in wastewater as it is proven to be an effective method for degrading organic

In order to provide quality care, nurses must first be educated about the aspects of quality nursing.
Nurse educators are responsible for teaching future nurses of their scope of practice and how to serve
the public through proper medical interventions. Although all nurses serve as educators to their
patients, nursing educators in academics have a unique role in teaching the future of the nursing field.
This is accomplished by staying informed on current nursing advancements and evidence based
practices. Because nurses constantly educate their patients, becoming a nursing educator seems like a

primary changes throughout modern history involve providing both clinical and theory education in

Qualifications and Experience
The major requirements for nurse educators are experience in the nursing field and higher education
degrees (Hebenstreit, 2012). The benefit of clinical experience of nursing instructors should not be
underscored (Hebenstreit, 2012). When nurse educators have worked in the field for a period of time,
they can better instruct students through personal experience (Fitzpatrick, 2014). Congruent with this
belief, requirements of nursing instructors include the registered nurse (RN) license and work under
that license for at least two years (Fitzpatrick, 2014). Registered nurses serve in various capacities, but
all specialties rely on a proper education (Fitzpatrick, 2014). Nurse educators are responsible for
producing competent, but hopefully excellent nurses.
Education
Because patients require care for all types of ailments, nurses must be provided proper and quality
education. Master degree in nursing is usually the minimum requirement (Hunt, 2012). Generally the

Bret s dream is initialized with the help of his mother; she plays a central role in shaping Bret s
attitude on life after his accident. She is constantly described as a hard woman, and she knew in order
for her son to survive, he would have to be hardened as well. After the accident, she might have
softened, might have let you [Bret] slide when things were toughest...but she didn t (Friedman 335).
She forced him to become independent through simple tasks such as not allowing him to have a
wheelchair and making him button his own shirt. Bret s dream of being useful coincides with his
mother s hopes for him, which is explained in Friedman s description of her: Your mother is a hard
woman who has no time for religion but who is sure we should all seek God, to try to understand what
our gift is, to be useful (Friedman 350). The narrator includes the mother s thoughts and actions
because they play an important role in deciphering whether Bret s dream is shared. Because their two
goals are so similar, we are lead to question whether the dream story in this essay is relevant to only
one person. Perhaps his desire to find a place in society was his mother s dream all along, and he
simply adopted the idea as his own. His mother s dream for him to live independently was born from
the damage left by his accident. This destruction inflicted upon Bret shaped not only his own life
desires but also his mother s wishes.

Differences Between The Outsiders Book And Movie
When comparing both mediums of The Outsiders, they both portray the story and main points of the
book differently creating advantages and disadvantages for both. The novel has many traits that the

Taxation Of The United States
Tax is an amount of money that a government requires people to pay according to their income, the
value of their property and that is used to pay for the things done by the government. It is a charge
usually of money imposed by authority on persons or property for public purposes. According to

against British taxation policy in the 1760s, leading to the American Revolution. The independent
nation collected taxes on imports (tariffs), whiskey, and (for a while) on glass windows. Taxation

Marian s Identity In Edible Women By Margaret Atwood
The novel Edible Women, by Margaret Atwood, is a piece of literature that describes the women s role
in the 1960s. The book centers around a woman named Marian McAlpin, who faces problems in her
relationship. Marian gets engaged to Peter, who is narcissistic and controlling. She notices that ever
since she has gotten engaged, she is starting to lose her appetite. This essay will seek to prove that
food is a symbol of Marian s identity.
The novel introduces the readers to Marian, a well educated woman, who works in Seymour Surveys,
a market research company. She lives in an apartment with Ainsley, a free spirited woman. Marian is
engaged to a self obsessed man names Peter, a lawyer, who is only using her as an accessory. He was
treating me as a stage prop; silent but solid, a two dimensional outline (Atwood 72). Ever since her
engagement she feels like her appetite is not normal anymore. ... Show more content on

Marian opened the soft boiled egg and saw the yolk looking up with its one significant and accusing
yellow eye, found her mouth closing together like a frightened sea anemone (174). She starts to notice
that her body is rejecting the food. I don t seem to be hungry anymore (164).
The second example is when Marian stops consuming certain foods. Well, she said, there are a lot of
things I can t eat; I mean, I haven t been eating them lately. Meat, for instance, and eggs and certain
vegetables (208). As Marian stops consuming certain foods, she is also letting Peter make important
decisions for her. Marian s first impulse was to answer, with the evasive flippancy she always used
before when he asked me serious questions about herself, What about Groundhog Day? . But instead I
rather have you decide that. I d rather leave the big decisions up to

Health And Mental Benefits Of Breakfast
Breakfast is often left on the back burner on each busy morning, but it is by far the most important
meal of the day. First, breakfast provides you with the energy you need after your 6 10 hour long
fasting period. This extra boost of fuel results in increased brain performance and concentration. A six

Moving inward, steam and the smell of espresso drift from the pot of fresh coffee that has witnessed
many breakfasts over the years. Next comes the pale green ceramic platter that holds large stacks of
fluffy pancakes slathered in liquid maple sweetness. A delicately woven straw basket contains golden
brown toast with oozing butter dripping down each slice like a faucet. Directly in the centre sits the
hickory smoked bacon. The quiet sizzle of each crispy piece was music to the family s ears. This
breakfast was a feast for the senses.
Perfect scrambled eggs can be achieved with these three easy tips. First, quality ingredients must be
used to create perfect scrambled eggs. To make the dish you will need four large eggs, ¼ teaspoon of
salt, and 1 tablespoon of butter. The final product will only be as good as your ingredients so make
sure to use the freshest ingredients as possible. Next, the eggs must be prepared the correct way to get

foam is gone add in the eggs and cook them until cooked egg forms around the skillet. With a spatula
push the eggs around the skillet using sweeping motions. Keep pushing the eggs for about 2 minutes.
Lastly, scrambled eggs need to look delicious when they are sitting on your breakfast table. The eggs

He wanted to demonstrate how African culture was different from what the people in the West
described it as. He wanted to give real characteristics of how the Ibo culture was because the western
people only gave their perspective and that was different from what was going on. His goal was to
give an African point of view on how the men in these cultures were by providing details on how they
earned titles, practiced polygamy, and demonstrated their strength as the dominant sex. There was
only a single story on the culture, and it was just in the way other countries viewed them, not
themselves. Chinua gave the perspective of someone who had experienced all these traditions and
cultures, including how the men in this society acted. He gave a representation of the role men played

  • 2. The Decision Tree Algorithms And Grows The Tree By... This is a pedagogical algorithm, which extracts the rules in the form of decision trees. This is similar to most of the decision tree algorithms and grows the tree by recursive partitioning. At every step it stores a queue of leaves that can be further expanded to sub trees and this process is repeated until a stopping condition is met. Traditional decision trees methods have a limited number of training observations. So they only have fewer number of observations to decide upon the split and leaf node class labels but on the other hand, Trepan re labels the original observations to the classifications made by the network. And the relabeled data will be used for the tree growing process. Additionally it can also add extra data points by mimicking the behavior of the network. It uses the network as an oracle to answer the classification queries about the newly generated data points. This way it can make sure that whenever a split node or leaf node class decision is made there are at least S_(min ) number of data points. Where S_(min )is a user specified number. Whenever we generate new data points at any particular node, we have to make sure that they satisfy all the constraints from root to the current node. One of the approach to distribute the data points over a network is to employ uniform distribution, but Trepan takes into account the distribution of data i.e. at each node it estimates the marginal distribution of data. If the data at the input is continuous then it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mental Health Professionals After reading the case study, it has cast doubt in the reader s mind about mental health professionals. Are they really helping the mentally ill or are they just doing a job for financial gain? The mental health professionals in those institutions did not recognize that these patients were not mentally ill; but the mentally ill residents observed that they were all sane. This example is the reason why excuses have no place in medicine, and that most mental health professionals do not give an in depth evaluation of a person or they just look for symptoms that are easily recognizable to suit given disorder. Mental health professionals should provide evidence for detecting or diagnosing a mental illness because mentally illness individuals often have several mental illnesses that co occur which makes it very hard for medical professionals to diagnosed. They involve no uncertainty. The hypothetical citizen, seeking to know his his position, would be advised that, assuming he owed a duty of care to the deceased which he had negligently broken, and that death resulted, he would be liable to conviction for manslaughter if, on the available evidence, the jury was satisfied that his negligence was gross. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lord Mackay LC, when considering the case of Adomako, said that the ordinary principles of law of negligence apply to ascertain whether or not D has been in breach of a duty of care towards the victim . By looking at the above statement, it is clear that those same principles should apply in determining these people to whom a duty of care is owed. These principles can be found in the leading negligence case of Donoghue v Stevenson (1932). In this case, Lord Atkin in the House of Lords said you must take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would be likely to injure your neighbour (...) persons who are closely and directly affected by my act that I ought reasonably to have them in contemplation as being so affected when I am directing my mind to the acts or omissions which are called into question . It can be argued that this goes much further than the traditional duty situations. If this examination is correct, then this form of manslaughter has certainly a very wide scope. Nevertheless, the principles of criminal and civil law do not always go well together. This is demonstrated by the case of Wacker (2003), which involved the bodies of 58 illegal immigrants and two survivors which were found in a lorry at Dover. The D was convicted of 58 counts of manslaughter by gross negligence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Kant s Categorical Imperative For The Practice Of Modern... Hamza Rafique 15 June 2014 Should Kant s categorical imperative be supported in the practice of modern medicine? Introduction Immanuel Kant saw the importance of autonomy long before the field of medicine was as advanced as it is now through the second formulation of his categorical imperative: Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end . Kant recognises that it is autonomy that allows for self actualisation and the manifestation of one s identity through having the capacity to make self governed choices. Therefore autonomy factor that gives humans the duty to treat each other as ends and to violate the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kant provides us with these ethical guidelines however there are cases in medicine which illustrate that a physician s expertise allows him to see that following a patient s autonomous decision may lead to further suffering causing the health professional to take a paternalistic course of action. This ethical problem has lead me to investigate whether medical practice should uphold Kant s categorical imperative, and if not where should we search for a way forward? I intend to analyse Kant s ethics to see where its strengths and weaknesses lie when applied to the medical field before exploring other ethical theories in an attempt to find the most suitable means of decision making in medicine. I will use case studies to illustrate the point that Kant s ethics, although perfect for an ideal world, does not work in the medical field, nor does a utilitarian approach. This leads us toward an intuitionist stance in order to keep the benefits of the categorical imperative offers us while maintaining applicability to medicine. How could the categorical imperative work in medicine? The categorical imperative does have strength in its principled and high minded nature that can be condensed down into the following three formulations: Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law without contradiction. February 14, 1997 The Ready to Eat Breakfast Cereal Industry in 1994 (A) 1 All is not well in the land of Tony the Tiger. In early 1994, the ready to eat (RTE) breakfast cereal industry had reached a critical turning point in its evolution. In an industry historically characterized by stability and above average profitability, slowing demand growth and a surge in private label sales threatened to undermine the dominant positions of the Big Three: Kellogg, General Mills, and Philip Morris. The 1993 year end statistics showed that industry sales growth had slowed to under 2%, while private labels had topped 5% market share by sales and 9% by volume for the first ... Vitamin fortification, which first appeared during the second World War, presweetening, which gained wide popularity in the 1950s, and the surge of interest in granola and natural cereals in the 1970s and 80s fueled this growth. By 1993, the U.S. market consumed 2.82 billion pounds of cereal, grossing nearly $8 billion in sales for breakfast cereal manufacturers. The RTE cereal industry had historically been one of the most concentrated of all U.S. industries, and firm market shares showed great persistence (see Exhibit 1). The largest cereal manufacturers were extremely profitable, routinely posting ROAs for their cereal divisions in the 15 30% range. However, the profitability of the industry attracted no significant entry, and the industry continued to become more concentrated. As a result, in 1972 the Federal Trade Commission filed a major antitrust suit against Kellogg, General Mills, and General Foods (then the maker of the Post line). The FTC argued that the leading RTE cereal manufacturers had jointly monopolized the RTE cereal market. In William Shakespeare s Titus Andronicus the characters Aaron, Tamora, Demetrius, and Chiron are considered monstrous due to their actions that lead up to the tragic ending of the play. Jeffrey Jerome Cohen s idea of characteristics that a monster possesse would also classify these four characters as a monster. Although Tamora, Aaron, Demetrius, and Chiron are the most monstrous characters of the play, none of the other characters are considered innocent because they all contribute to the terrible ending. Cohen states in his essay Monster Culture (Seven Theses) a monster is manipulative and never exactly dies, these characteristics are seen in Aaron. After informing Titus about some information about sparing the life of his two sons Aaron says to himself, If that be called deceit, I will be honest and never whilst I live deceive men so, (3.1 192 193). Kurt Vonnegut s novel Slaughterhouse 5 (1969) and Jess Walters novel The Zero (2006) share a series of similarities not only in the formal aspects of the novel but also in their contents. Both authors create a fictional narrative in order to present their experiences of two of the most traumatic events related to the contemporary history of the United States: the participation of the United States in the Second World War and the collapse of the Twin Towers on 9/11. Nevertheless, it is important to notice that the sense of fragmentation is more present in The Zero because from the very beginning, the first sentence initiates the pattern of narrative interruption due to it is already fragmented: the first five words do not become meaningful until five lines afterwards. If we apply this to a larger scale, the same happens with a significant amount of scenes where the ending is not concluded but interrupted. It is the case, for example, of the first sentence, whose ending is uncompleted: Mrs. Lubach opened her mouth to answer but (Walter 7); and the next line starts another scene where Remy is at the hospital waiting to be attended. Another example can be found some scenes afterwards, where the sentence does not reveal what Remy found: Remy reaching for the falling glass and finding (Walter 22). Literature Review On The Phonics Literature Review The Debate There are a million adults who cannot read, one in six Londoners is functionally illiterate and people who cannot read or write are excluded from opportunities and may eventually become alienated and turn to crime (Johnson 2010, cited by Gross 2010). Gross (2010) expresses her concern and believes it is not where the children live, it is how they were taught to read and how they were properly motivated to learn to read. She endorses the synthetic systematic phonics approach as opposed to that of the whole word approach and believes we must place our focus on reading as it is indispensable. Phonics advocates have been arguing that in order for children to learn to read, they need to have an explicit instruction in the rules of printed text in order to read properly. The phonics approach has been described as bottom up as it teaches the children to decode text and then the meaning and understanding will follow while the whole word approach is described as top down, as the children depend on the pictures within the book, form hypothesis and make predictions of the words with the text of the book being read (Wren, 2003). Gross (2010) state that children should systematically be taught to read through phonics and not by memorising whole words ; by the late 1970 s teachers were no longer fond of that approach as it was not working because children were still struggling to read, it was dull and repetitive and new words were introduced at a ... The drag strips also occasionally held a fun day Sunday, which the racing would last all day. But, after the release of Fast and the Furious , drag racing became a double edge sword. It began happening on the drag strip and on the street. A new subculture was born, Underground Street Racing! Street racing was happening anytime anywhere, did not matter if it was in mid day traffic or on a neighborhood road. Street racers did not care who they were putting in danger. People were dying left and right from the now iconic street racing. Law enforcement became fed up, and began cracking down on street racers. Arrests were being made for the crime of street racing, and cars were being impounded. Florida now has 13 drag strips throughout the state to help detour street racing. Based on my experience in Florida law enforcement of 5 years, 4 of which was a traffic unit officer. Florida alone has very strict laws regarding street racing. First time offense can lead to ... Finding Emergency Housing After A Fight Essay From trying to find a place to get her mother in law s hair permed to having to find emergency housing after a fight erupted between two seniors (sisters, no less) over dentures to spending Christmas in the emergency room instead of the living room, Gail s firsthand experience shows how sticky it can get when you are in charge of your parents. The book is divided into 60 vignettes followed by questions, including Surviving the Annual Family Reunion, To Tube or Not to Tube, That Is the Question, and When I Will Means I Won t. Gail, who also speaks and holds workshops on aging, says the questions get people thinking about their own situations. One problem is most people think they are going to just up and die. That s like 10 percent of people now, she says. This means that most of us will end up needing care provided by others at some point, like it or not. It s the best of all worlds when you are willing to broach it before the crisis, Gail says. What it brings up if you wait is more fear. Death is undergirding everything to talk about. Like Amy, Gail says a meeting is best. The first thing is to bring family together after a letter or a phone call to tell them it s time to talk about end of life issues. She also suggests using a facilitator, like a geriatric care manager, nurse or social worker who will cover the basics because, sometimes, parents will refuse to talk. • 24. The Catholic Church And The Church The Catholic Church as we know it is much different than that of the past. Love, acceptance, forgiveness, giving, and tradition are all things that come to mind when the words Catholic Church are heard. If one were to ask those living in the 1400 1800s what comes to mind when thinking about the Catholic Church, their answer would have been very different. With the exception of a few countries, there is a separation of the church and state in todays government. In our current state of government, the church has no say in the justice system or decisions made by the government. There is no priest or king who rules over the country or attends government meetings. In early Europe, this was not the case. The Catholic Church had great influence on the government. The church actually was the government in some countries who operated under a theocratic ruling. With God being the ultimate ruler, the Priest or King was the next in power. The royals are supposedly Gods chosen ones. They are the closest to him and everyone else is below them. The church had power over the military, who had access to education, individuals socioeconomic class, the laws, and almost anything else one could think of.1 The ultimate goal of the church was to convert anyone who was not Christian into a Christian as a way of gaining power. The inquisition ordered conquistadores to find and conquer lands which could be used to cultivate Spanish wealth and spread Catholicism.2 In this sense, the church s power ... The three major components of the Information Processing Model of memory work, in a way, as a system. In Fenton´s reagent for example; Fe(II) is used as a catalyst, in the process Fe(II) is brought to the other oxidation state of Fe(III), in this process OH* radicals are formed that are able to completely mineralize organic compounds. It is clear from the standard redox potential data that hydroxyl radical is the strongest known oxidant (2.06 V), second to fluorine (2.23 V) (Table 1). Therefore, the complete mineralization of most of the organic matters is possible, when the hydroxyl radicals are the main oxidizing species in the solution. This is one of the major advantages of AOPs, since other chemical oxidation processes mostly lead to partial oxidation of the target compounds, ant thus, the generation of new hazardous compounds is possible.
