Buddhism was founded in the 6th century BC in Nepal by Siddhartha Gautama, who became known as the Buddha or "enlightened one." The core teachings of Buddhism are the Four Noble Truths about suffering and its causes, and the Eightfold Path to end suffering. Buddhists believe in rebirth and karma, where one's actions determine the nature of one's rebirth, with the goal of achieving nirvana and escaping the cycle of rebirth. The Tripitaka are Buddhism's core holy texts containing Buddha's teachings.
