The British established control over India through the East India Company from 1757 to 1858. During this period, known as Company Rule, the East India Company established colonies at Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta and extended its dominion over much of India through military conquest. In 1858, after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British government dissolved the East India Company and established direct rule over India under the British Raj, which lasted until 1947.
