The British Empire originated in the late 15th century and grew significantly over the following centuries, first through exploration and colonization in the 16th-18th centuries and then through further territorial expansion in Asia and Africa in the 19th century. It reached its peak during the Victorian era in the late 19th century but began declining in the early 20th century as nationalism increased in the colonies and as the costs of war weakened Britain.
