The British Empire rose to power between 1583 and 1783 through colonization efforts and the East India Company. It reached its peak between 1815 and 1914 during the Imperial Century through expansion in Africa and Asia. However, the empire declined after World War 2 as colonies gained independence, and the empire formally ended in 1997 as the last British overseas territories were handed over.
