2. Potou, Senegal, is one of the target sites of the
Millennium Villages Project, an initiative of the
global nonprofit Millennium Promise. Focused
on alleviating poverty, Millennium Promise is
supported by Consumer Capital Partners. The
village of Potou is struggling with significant
environmental degradation and food
insecurity, but is slowly overcoming these
challenges.
Last year, a team from CyberSmart Africa
successfully deployed large, interactive digital
screen technology in Potou Elementary School.
3. The ongoing project, which is expected to continue
through 2015, is a proof-of-concept designed to
demonstrate that teachers and students can benefit
from computers in schools, even in remote parts of
the world. Broadly, the project has shown that
interactive digital technology can be used
successfully in Africa's classrooms, even where
electricity is not readily available.
During the course of the Potou project, CyberSmart
Africa had to overcome several pitfalls. The team
identified a few key points to be considered for future
projects:
4. - Equipment needs to be simple and easy
to use.
- Content should be provided to help
teachers in creating lessons.
- Teachers need ongoing support to merge
technology into their classrooms.
As lesson plans and more resilient
equipment are developed, the hope is that
more schools in developing parts of the
world can benefit from interactive
technologies in the classroom.
