Overview of Learning Object
Repository (LOR)
What is the LOR?
Shared online space within D2L Brightspace
Houses learning objects
 Any file or web resource you would normally use within
your courses
 Each object has identifying metadata (title, description,
key words) to facilitate searches
Admin Level Setup
LOR Admin Overview
Roles/Permissions
Creation/Trusts
LOR Admin: Roles/Permissions
Under Roles and Permissions, LOR is a separate
category
At minimum, set these for Admins, Teachers, and
Students, along with another other roles you wish
to have access to a LOR
LOR Admin: Creation/Trusts
Create a LOR. Riverland has two types:
 Organization - all faculty at Riverland are able to publish to it and
share learning objects
 Department – only faculty teaching courses within that department
have access and can share learning objects
For each, you need to establish Trusts, which
controls who has access
 Trusts can be based on existing roles or customized
 Department – by restricting it to a particular department, it will only
be visible to instructors of courses in that department

How to Publish to the LOR
Create File in Appropriate Application
LOR files can be of multiple varieties
 Word, Excel, PowerPoint, pdf, etc.
Use Edit Course tool
Find Learning Repository
Choose Publish
Choose Your File
Browse for your file
Choose where to
publish
If new, do not need to
choose Overwrite
Existing Object
Choose Next
Identify Object Properties- then Publish
Select Description and
key words to help
identify document
This is helpful when
your LOR grows
Use terms, Course
IDs, dates, etc.
 We include the course
number in the title
Choose Publish
Manage/Search Screenshot
Updating LOR Files
Updating a LOR File
Follow same steps as
publish
Choose Overwrite
Existing Object
Choose Search to find
file to replace
Search for File to Replace/Update
Type in file name
Choose Search
Finish by Updating and Publishing

  • 4. What is the LOR? Shared online space within D2L Brightspace Houses learning objects  Any file or web resource you would normally use within your courses  Each object has identifying metadata (title, description, key words) to facilitate searches
  • 7. LOR Admin: Roles/Permissions Under Roles and Permissions, LOR is a separate category At minimum, set these for Admins, Teachers, and Students, along with another other roles you wish to have access to a LOR

Riverland has two types:  Organization - all faculty at Riverland are able to publish to it and share learning objects  Department – only faculty teaching courses within that department have access and can share learning objects For each, you need to establish Trusts, which controls who has access  Trusts can be based on existing roles or customized  Department – by restricting it to a particular department, it will only be visible to instructors of courses in that department

  • 24. Questions to Consider  How will I use this document in my courses?  Will one instructor use this document in multiple courses?  Will this document be used by multiple instructors?  Will this document be used by multiple departments?
  • 25. Use of LOR Depends on Answers Yes  If one instructor using same file for multiple courses  If using same file across multiple sections  If using same file within a department  If using same file across departments No  If file is used by one faculty member in one class

  • 27. Create File in Appropriate Application LOR files can be of multiple varieties  Word, Excel, PowerPoint, pdf, etc. Use Edit Course tool Find Learning Repository Choose Publish
  • 28. Choose Your File Browse for your file Choose where to publish If new, do not need to choose Overwrite Existing Object Choose Next
  • 29. Identify Object Properties- then Publish Select Description and key words to help identify document This is helpful when your LOR grows Use terms, Course IDs, dates, etc.  We include the course number in the title Choose Publish
  • 32. Updating a LOR File Follow same steps as publish Choose Overwrite Existing Object Choose Search to find file to replace
  • 33. Search for File to Replace/Update Type in file name Choose Search
  • 34. Finish by Updating and Publishing Choose file Choose Next Click Publish Update Object Properties
