Interview set ups were less conventional than other documentaries:

voice which is unconventional

6. MISE EN SCENE
When taking about the food
bank, there are close ups of food
from the food bank
Ambient low-key lighting is used
which could be seen as having
connotations of sadness and struggle
When talking about
Christmas, we see shots
from inside one family’s
house with festive
decorations. So here,
we see relevant mise
en scene relating to
Christmas.
There is a lack of mise en
scene relevant to the topic
in interviews. However, it
could be argued the
furniture in the homes
could be seen as relevant
as they are quite tired
looking which is significant
to the theme of poverty.

7. SOUND
Diegetic sound is from interviews and
observational footage
Voiceover:
• Non-diegetic sound
• Voice of god narration
• Female voiceover using Standard English with an authoritative and informative tone
• The voiceover provides an introduction to the topic at the beginning and provides
information
• The voiceover states facts such as ”the number of malnutrition cases in England has
almost doubled in five years” to inform on the issue and educate the audience
• The voiceover furthers the exposition and ties sections together by providing links
between the different children’s cases

8. EDITING
Editing provides a structure and helps to create a meaningful progression for the audience.
Cutaways:
• Conventional in documentaries
• Cutaways are from interviews to observational and actuality footage
• Sound from the interview continues to run under the cutaway
• Cutaways illustrate what is being discussed and provides variety for the audience
• Cutaways are used to avoid jump cuts as during the editing process the interviewer’s
questions should be edited out as this is conventional
Other edits:
• Straight cuts – conventional in documentaries so audience does not get distracted
• Some montages of observational footage
