This document presents a new tensor-based morphometric framework for quantifying cortical shape variations using local area elements computed from Riemannian metric tensors. It introduces a novel weighted spherical harmonic (SPHARM) representation that generalizes the traditional SPHARM. The weighted-SPHARM provides a smooth parametrization of cortical meshes and can be used to compute metric tensors and local area elements, allowing quantification of cortical growth along both normal and tangential directions. It also describes how the weighted-SPHARM relates to diffusion smoothing and provides advantages for cortical surface analysis and registration.
