State of the Map Asia (SotM-Asia) is the annual regional conference of OpenStreetMap (OSM) organized by OSM communities in Asia. First SotM-Asia was organized in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2015, and the second was organized in Manila, Philippines in 2016. This year’s conference, third in the series, was organized in Kathmandu, Nepal on September 23 – 24, 2017 at Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, Nepal. We brought nearly 200 Open Mapping enthusiasts from Asia and beyond to this year’s SotM-Asia. The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge and experience among mappers; expand their network; and generate ideas to expand map coverage and effective use of OSM data in Asian continent. We chose ‘from creation to use of OSM data’ as the theme of this year’s conference, emphasizing on the effective use of OSM data. We also brought together a government panel from four different countries in this year’s SotM-Asia. We believe this event will deepen the bond and enhance collaboration among OSM communities across Asia. More information about the conference can be found on: http://stateofthemap.asia.

ABSTRACT
In our increasingly data-driven society, data literacy is an important civic skill which we should be developing in our society. Data is slowly but steadily forcing their way into the societies. Data literacy may seem less technical than either Computer Science or any other fields. Still we need to envisage a wide variety of tools for accessing, converting and manipulating data. These require to understand relational databases (like MS Access), data manipulation techniques, statistical software tools (like Minitab, SPSS, STATA and MS Excel) and data representation software tools (like MS PowerPoint and MS Excel). This seminar includes an introduction on data literacy, its inter-relationship with information literacy and statistical literacy. It also includes various steps for working with data followed by short demonstration of data analysis techniques by using the software STATA11.

CSUN 2024 Simplifying Accessible Data Visualizations - 5 April 2024.pptx
Highcharts and Elsevier share recent research into making interactive web charts more accessible. Our usability studies focused on improving intelligibility and understandability of non-visual user experiences of graphs and charts. We will share findings around the design of use case-based text descriptions and personalized charts. When we started our research into screen reader friendly charts eight years ago, we challenged the notion that a table version of the data was an equivalent and sufficiently accessible alternative. Since then, we’ve explored many features such as automated data point and structure descriptions, human created descriptions, and sonification or tones. We will share our research into examining different information seeking modes or use cases. What is the ideal user experience for use cases of: data point examination, identification of trends, and main idea extraction? Based upon these modes we will propose optimal designs for accessible data visualization consumption. With each of the new accessibility research questions we will provide real user feedback from non-sighted users on our approach. We will also show screen reader demos to help illustrate design considerations.

Causal networks, learning and inference - Introduction
This document discusses causal inference and its importance in understanding data. It introduces Simpson's Paradox, where data can show one relationship at an aggregate level but the opposite relationship when separated into subgroups. This document outlines a mapping strategy to develop OpenStreetMap (OSM) data for Surabaya and DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. The strategy involves mapping lifeline infrastructure and administrative boundaries over multiple stages from October 2016 to October 2017. Field surveys are conducted using OpenMapKit and ODK Collect to collect detailed attribute data, which is quality assured and uploaded to OSM. Challenges encountered include accurate GPS on smartphones and heavy rain during surveys. This document discusses completeness assessment of maps. It defines completeness as how well map details reflect the real world. Completeness is important to identify areas for focus editing and understand community health. The document outlines prior work assessing 80 cities and computing details for 1 billion map tiles worldwide. It proposes establishing a "gold standard" of highly complete tiles rated by multiple mappers to measure quality in other datasets and regions. Early findings show dense tiles often have higher completeness, but some less dense tiles are also high quality, so completeness depends on multiple complex factors. Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
