Joshua J. Wells (Indiana University South Bend) presented “Public Data for Public Archaeology: Developing Linked Open Data, Open-Source GIS, and Sensitive Data Standards for the Digital Index of north American Archaeology” on behalf of his co-authors (Kansa, Kansa, Yerka, Noack Myers, DeMuth and Bissett) at the 79th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology in Austin, TX in April 2014. This presentation discusses the relationships between archaeological linked open data and the very same “Big Data” discussed by Anderson. Intersecting with law, research, education, and ethics, the perspectives of anthropology, informatics and cybernetics accommodate a unique look at the broad scope of implications of this type of research and work to prevent disuse, misuse and abuse as we navigate new human vs. technological problems.

State of the Map Asia (SotM-Asia) is the annual regional conference of OpenStreetMap (OSM) organized by OSM communities in Asia. First SotM-Asia was organized in Jakarta, Indonesia in 2015, and the second was organized in Manila, Philippines in 2016. This year’s conference, third in the series, was organized in Kathmandu, Nepal on September 23 – 24, 2017 at Park Village Resort, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu, Nepal.
We brought nearly 200 Open Mapping enthusiasts from Asia and beyond to this year’s SotM-Asia. The event provided an opportunity to share knowledge and experience among mappers; expand their network; and generate ideas to expand map coverage and effective use of OSM data in Asian continent. We chose ‘from creation to use of OSM data’ as the theme of this year’s conference, emphasizing on the effective use of OSM data. We also brought together a government panel from four different countries in this year’s SotM-Asia. We believe this event will deepen the bond and enhance collaboration among OSM communities across Asia.

This document summarizes a study on identifying chart types from images shared on Twitter and predicting how viral (retweeted and liked) the images will be. The study used a convolutional neural network to identify 11 different chart types from images. It also used a multi-modal neural network to jointly predict retweets and likes by using features from the images as well as author metadata. The study introduced two new datasets (DataTweet+ and DataTweet) of charts collected from Twitter and found the models performed best when trained on these realistic datasets compared to benchmark datasets.

Data journalism in the second machine age
Data journalism has a long history but is increasingly important as algorithms and data play a larger role. Newspapers have used data for centuries, and tools like calculators, mainframes, spreadsheets and databases helped early computer-assisted reporting. Today, data journalism uses online tools to gather, clean, analyze and visualize data to support investigative reporting. Emerging trends include using open data to monitor issues like corruption, using sensors and drones to collect real-time data, and ensuring accountability and transparency around the use of personalized data and predictive algorithms. When combined with responsive institutions, data journalism can help drive social change.

Katrina Petersen from Trilateral Research presented work carried out within the IN-PREP project at the "Data-Power: Global In/Securities" event. The presentation focused on the ethical issues that emerge when preparing for disasters by sharing data across borders/boundaries.
Conclusion
Big data presents challenges at the data, model, and system levels. At the data level, issues include heterogeneous sources, missing/uncertain values, and privacy/errors. At the model level, generating global models from local patterns is difficult. At the system level, linking complex relationships between data sources and handling growth is challenging. Addressing these issues requires high-performance computing, algorithms to analyze distributed data and models, and carefully designed systems to form useful patterns from unstructured data and identify trends over time. Big data technologies may help provide more accurate social sensing and understanding.

Encouraging an ecological evolution of data infrastructure
Infrastructure is often thought of as a complex physical construct usually designed to transport information or things (e.g. electricity, water, cars, money, sound, data…). The Research Data Alliance (RDA) takes a more holistic view and considers infrastructure as a complex body of relationships between people, machines, and organisations.
This paper will describe how this more ecological perspective leads RDA to define and govern an agile virtual organization. We seek to harness the power of the volunteer, through an open problem solving approach that focusses on the problems of our individual members and their organisations. We focus on implementing solutions that make data sharing work better without defining a priori what is necessary. We do not judge the fitness of a solution, per se, but instead assess how broadly the solution is adopted, recognizing that adoption is often the social challenge of technical problem.
We seek to encourage a bottoms up approach with light guidance on principles from the top. The goal is to develop community solutions that solve real problems today yet are adaptive to changing technologies and needs.

Beyond Preservation: Situating Archaeological Data in Professional Practice
This document discusses the potential for digital data in archaeology beyond just preserving existing practices. It outlines some visions, including optimizing current practices versus using data as an opportunity for new research methods and communication. Open Context is presented as taking the latter approach through open data sharing, linked data practices, and collaboration across projects. However, challenges to wider data sharing are also discussed, such as a lack of professional incentives and constraints of current academic evaluation systems. The document argues for treating data as an object of continued intellectual investment and innovation in order to fully realize its potential.

Beyond Preservation: Situating Archaeological Data in Professional Practice
This document discusses the potential for digital data in archaeology beyond just preserving existing practices. It outlines some visions, including optimizing current practices versus using data as an opportunity for new research methods and communication. Open Context is presented as taking the latter approach through open data sharing, linked data practices, and collaboration across projects. However, challenges to wider data sharing are also discussed, such as a lack of professional incentives and constraints of current academic evaluation systems. Who Makes International Human Rights Law?
This research project investigates which actors, such as governments or NGOs, have shaped international human rights law over time. The researchers will analyze meeting records and proposals related to human rights treaties to determine how international human rights law has developed and which actors have been most influential. Understanding who influences human rights law is important because it can help predict how concepts of human rights may change in the future.
IFA 2012 Conference Paper: Public Archaeology & the Internet
This document discusses how public archaeology in the UK is utilizing the internet to increase participation and engagement with archaeological resources. It notes that internet use in the UK has allowed for photo and image sharing of archaeological sites online as well as blogs, podcasts, and social media like Twitter to promote archaeology. However, it also acknowledges that increased online participation through these resources may exacerbate inequalities in participation. It provides contact information for the author at the end.
Engaging the Community with Digital Archaeology at the Old Church of St. Nich...
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by the Churches Conservation Trust to undertake a community project at the Old Church of St. Nicholas, Uphill during Heritage Open Days. Whilst the CCT were interested in the results of the archaeological work, the primary aim of the project was to use the work to enthuse the community about this seldom open heritage asset. It was hoped that as a result volunteers would be found to help keep the church regularly open to visitors.
The project made use of a combination of laser scanning, metric survey, excavation, RTI and geophysics to investigate the church and graveyard. This integrated approach to site investigation helped draw large numbers of visitors to the site and allowed them to learn about the practice of modern archaeology.
With engaging the community a priority people were encouraged to help conduct the archaeological work where possible. Volunteers were trained in archaeological survey and excavation techniques and given explanations of how the equipment they were using worked.
The project was carried out in such a way that provisional results could be viewed on site to maximise engagement. Raw scans were shown on the instrument as the laser scanning progressed, the graveyard was surveyed straight to CAD on a tablet PC, and Reflectance Transformation Imaging was processed on site. This allowed volunteers to see the product of their work straight away. A selection of the project work was exhibited on the final open day including the processed laser scan survey of the exterior of the church.
This project brought new knowledge about the Old Church of St. Nicholas to the community and allowed individuals from that community to share their knowledge with others. The multi-disciplinary approach to this project drew large numbers of people to the church and many were excited by the potential of the digital practices of modern archaeology, however traditional approaches still hold a great appeal.
This paper will discuss the successes and challenges of the project, the benefits that the use of technology brought to it, and some of the findings of the work carried out.
Protecting the Past
The Athienou Archaeological Project (AAP) has worked in Athienou, Cyprus for 25 years to excavate the Athienou-Malloura archaeological site. Looting has been a major issue at the site, but AAP has developed strong community engagement that has successfully curbed looting. The project director is from the local community, allowing him to understand local economic issues and work with looters. AAP also provides economic and educational benefits to the town through tourism and a local museum. These efforts were celebrated at a 25th anniversary event attended by the whole town, demonstrating the project's positive influence on the community.

Abstract:
In a technological society such as Canada, it is suggested that a specialized kind of expert citizenship is needed (Andrew Feenberg). In the era of big data, others suggest that there is a need to learn how to read algorithms and to study its high priests and alchemists (Genevieve Bell). While, doing citizenship requires a political ethics of technology to thwart technological and quantitative fundamentalism (Darin Barney). Finally, in the midst of a data revolution we need to critically re-conceptualize data (Rob Kitchin). Quite simply, in today's Canada doing citizenship requires data literacy, technical, philosophical and political. Access to print media - books, government documents, academic journals - in libraries and archives enabled a literate society, the prerequisite of a democratic system. I argue that good governance in knowledge producing institutions, is to have technological experts, both data creators and preservers, working to store, manage, disseminate and preserve data so that we have the requisite artifacts to increase our literacy and build upon collected knowledge. Data literacy I suggest, is indispensable in the current democratic system, and that requires having access to data, data infrastructures - knowledge and technology - and dedicated skilled people and resources to sustainably care for them. I consider research data management to be our duty.

Abstract:
Today we are witnessing several shifts in scholarly practice, in and across multiple disciplines, as researchers embrace digital techniques to tackle established research questions in new ways and new questions afforded by digital and digitized collections, approaches, and technologies. Pervasive adoption of technology, coupled with the co-creation of new social processes, has created a new and complex space for scholarship where citizens both generate and analyse data as they interact at the intersection of the physical and digital. Drawing on a background in distributed computing, and adopting the lens of Social Machines, this talk discusses current activity in digital scholarship, framing it in its interdisciplinary settings.
Bio:
David De Roure is Professor of e-Research at University of Oxford, Director of the Oxford e-Research Centre, and chairs Oxford’s Digital Humanities research programme. He previously directed the Digital Social Research programme for the UK Economic and Social Research Council, and serves as a strategic advisor in new forms of data and realtime analytics. Trained in electronics and computer science, his career has involved interdisciplinary collaborations in chemistry, astrophysics, bioinformatics, social computing, digital libraries, and sensor networks. His personal research is in Computational Musicology, Web Science, and Internet of Things. He is a frequent speaker and writer on digital research and the future of scholarly communications. This talk explores how to involving a wide community of users in collaborative management of open data activities within a Smart City. The talk discusses how crowdsourcing techniques can be applied within a Smart City context using crowdsourcing and human computation platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk, Mobile Works, and Crowd Flower.

Over 25 years ago, as the web was emerging as a medium for distributing public information, it was promoted as a tool for increased democratisation. These digital divides are creating a tapestry of marginalisation through different devices, skills, and communication potentials, and it is valuable to reflect on their dimensions – both technical and social, and consider how we can consider them in a systematic way. Cottbus Brandenburg University of Technology Lecture series on Smart Regions Critically Assembling Data, Processes & Things: Toward and Open Smart City June 5, 2018
This lecture will critically focus on smart cities from a data based socio-technological assemblage approach. It is a theoretical and methodological framework that allows for an empirical examination of how smart cities are socially and technically constructed, and to study them as discursive regimes and as a large technological infrastructural systems.
The lecture will refer to the research outcomes of the ERC funded Programmable City Project led by Rob Kitchin at Maynooth University and will feature examples of empirical research conducted in Dublin and other Irish cities.
In addition, the lecture will discuss the research outcomes of the Canadian Open Smart Cities project funded by the Government of Canada GeoConnections Program. Examples will be drawn from five case studies namely about the cities of Edmonton, Guelph, Ottawa and Montreal, and the Ontario Smart Grid as well as number of international best practices. The recent Infrastructure Canada Canadian Smart City Challenge and the controversial Sidewalk Lab Waterfront Toronto project will also be discussed.
It will be argued that no two smart cities are alike although the technological solutionist and networked urbanist approaches dominate and it is suggested that these kind of smart cities may not live up to the promise of being better places to live.
In this lecture, the ideals of an Open Smart City are offered instead and in this kind of city residents, civil society, academics, and the private sector collaborate with public officials to mobilize data and technologies when warranted in an ethical, accountable and transparent way in order to govern the city as a fair, viable and livable commons that balances economic development, social progress and environmental responsibility. Although an Open Smart City does not yet exist, it will be argued that it is possible.Big Data
This document provides an agenda for a session on big data that will include readings and discussion. Four readings related to big data and geography will be discussed, looking at common themes, concepts, and questions. There will also be an exercise assessing big data characteristics. The session will conclude with an introduction to the Programmable City project, a research initiative studying how cities are programmed through data and algorithms.

However, when performing real-time analytics, timestamps should be first class citizens and we need rich time semantics to get the most out of our data. We also need to deal with ever growing datasets while keeping performant, which is as fun as it sounds.
It is no wonder time-series databases are now more popular than ever before. Join me in this session to learn about the internal architecture and building blocks of QuestDB, an open source time-series database designed for speed. We will also review a history of some of the changes we have gone over the past two years to deal with late and unordered data, non-blocking writes, read-replicas, or faster batch ingestion.

In these slides, we discuss how LinkedIn implements a powerful dynamic policy enforcement engine, called ViewShift, and integrates it within its data lake. We show the query engine architecture and how catalog implementations can automatically route table resolutions to compliance-enforcing SQL views. Such views have a set of very interesting properties: (1) They are auto-generated from declarative data annotations. (2) They respect user-level consent and preferences (3) They are context-aware, encoding a different set of transformations for different use cases (4) They are portable; while the SQL logic is only implemented in one SQL dialect, it is accessible in all engines.
