Booker T. Washington was born into slavery in 1856 in Virginia and became a prominent African American educator and author. He served as the first principal of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for 33 years, where he advocated for vocational education and training for freed slaves to learn trades. As a prominent spokesman against slavery, Washington also wrote about his life and experiences in his 1901 autobiography.
