Narrabri Shire Council (NSC) engaged the FKG Group to conduct pavement
and lighting upgrades atNarribri Airport. The project involves lengthening ofthe
main runway, pavementrehabilitation ofthe existing runway, granular overlay,
stormwater and drainage installation,construction ofa new taxiway and apron
areas and a complete aeronautical ground lighting upgrade.
Warrego Highway Reconstruction STHD-1521, Toowoomba to
Dalby, Qld

As a result of damages caused by the Queensland weather to more than
7,000km of the state’s road network, the Department of Transport and Main
Roads (TMR) created the Transport Network Reconstruction Program (TNRP).
This program, under disaster recovery funding from both the state and federal
governments, is delivering state-wide repairs to damaged roads and transport
infrastructure.
FKG was engaged to undertake four works packages for the rehabilitation of
12.9km the Warrego Highwaybetween Toowoomba and Dalby.The scope
involved road profiling,general excavation, subgrade treatment,lime
stabilisation,construction ofplantmixed cement,foam bitumen stabilised and
unbound pavements,stormwater and drainage installation,bitumen sealing,
asphaltsurfacing,and line marking.Because ofthe Warrego Highway’s status
as a major freightroute, extensive traffic managementwas needed to maintain
safe conditions for projectstaff and road users.The works delivered much
needed repairs to provide improved conditions for heavy transportvehicles and
motorists travelling throughoutthe area.

South Burnett Regional Council, $6.96m
Supervisor
South Burnett Regional Council identified a need to undertake restoration works to rehabilitate and replace road
infrastructure damaged during Tropical Cyclone Oswald and the associated rainfall and flooding events ofJanuary 2013.
The FKG Group was contracted to undertake works which included pavementreconstruction ofboth sealed and
unsealed roads,road drainage reconstruction and floodwayreconstruction.These works were funded by the federal and
state governments through the National Disaster Recovery and ReliefArrangements (NDRRA).
Northern Regional Ponds, Wandoan, Qld
QGC Pty Ltd, $31.8m

Utilising Coal Seam Gas sourced from the Surat basin, QGC’s QCLNG project supplies around 8.4 million tonnes of
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to the global market every year. As part of the project, FKG was engaged to construct four
ponds for the storage of saline CSG water (a by-product of the CSG extraction process): the Bloodworth Pond (150ML),
Thackery Pond (230ML), Phillip Pond (300ML) and Tethys Pond (400ML). After initial award, the contract was expanded
to include a further three ponds, Kathleen, Windibri and Ross, all 25ML. The ponds were all lined with 2 mm HDPE liners
and built to have a set design life of 20 years.
Located near Wandoan, 70km north of Miles, works included site clearing, installation of HDPE liners, fencing, extensive
bulk earthworks, drainage, topsoiling on embankments, and the installation of leak detection and depressurisation sumps
and pumps.
CLEWLEY PARK DETENTION BASIN, TOOWOOMBA, QLD
Toowoomba Regional Council, $5.9m

As part of Toowoomba Regional Council’s (TRC) Gowrie Creek CatchmentManagementStrategy,a series offlood
mitigation works are being conducted around the city. These include the construction ofdetention basins and
improvements to both Westand EastCreeks upstream ofthe CBD. The Clewley Park projectinvolved the complete
upgrade of a major detention basin and works to existing park facilities.The scope included 5,000m³ ofcut and fill works,
the removal of 10,000m² of damaged bluestone waterwaywalls and the construction oftwo pedestrian bridges.
ClewleyPark was funded partly under the NDRRA (Natural Disaster Reliefand Recovery Arrangements) Program as a
Category B flood mitigation project.Of the total cost, $2.5 million came from NDRRAfunding with TRC contributing the
balance.Taking into accountsome minor approved delays as a resultof wet weather,the project finished on time,within
budgetand met all clientspecifications.
The detention basin is designed to help protect against flooding by slowing and storing water for a short period o f time.
Improvements also included reconstruction of the water channel and construction of a spillway wall to temporarily slow
and detain water as it moves downstream. These works were designed to help manage the flow of water and erosion
from West Creek into Gowrie Creek to protect homes and businesses in central Toowoomba from floods.
Roadtek

NDRRA Carnarvon Highway Upgrade, Roma to Injune, Qld
TMR, $50m

As part of the Queensland and Australian Governments’ Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA)
program, extensive flood relief works were undertaken in response to the extreme weather events of early 2013. The
project involved a two-stage overlay of the Carnarvon Highway between Roma and Injune which included bitumen
sealing and culvert construction. One of the biggest issues was the sub-grade, which was very unstable and required
extensive re-work to stabilise itproperly.
Blase was responsible for the supervision of labourers and subcontractors undertaking stabilisation works. He worked in
conjunction with the Regional ProjectOffice to set program targets and implementmeasures to ensure theywere met.

NDRRA Mt Sylvia Road Reconstruction, Mt Sylvia, Qld
TMR, $18m
Supervisor
Another NDRRA project, this involved the extensive reconstruction of roads (including eight causeways) between Mt
Sylvia and Glen Rock National Park in the Lockyer Valley south-west of Gatton. Works included concrete works,
causeway demolition and rebuild, placement of rigid and flexible pavements, culvert installation, bitumen sealing, bulk
earthworks and water diversion. The project team met significant challenges in building a causeway beneath the area’s
water table. There were also two more floods which occurred during the construction period, causing significant delays
and damaging works which had been completed.Blase’s role was much the same as the Carnarvon Highwayproject.
Tansey Park Stabilisation Project, Logan, Qld
Logan and Gateway Maintenance Alliance, $2m
Supervisor
The project involved the stabilisation of a road and embankment running through Tansey Park in Logan. The scope
included the removal of undermined stone pitching and embankment material and replacing it with stabilised sand and
textiles as well as the installation of a subsoil system to flow beneath the running surface of the road to the adjacent
creek. The height of the road’s bridge was a factor in achieving compaction on the bridge abutment sub-grade material.
The team had to use a plate compactor on an 8T extendable digger arm to achieve the correct compaction level. A
mobile scaffold unit was also required to place the embankment textiles as the tightness of the radius of the embankment
was problematic.
Blase supervised all site staff and subcontractors in the delivery of works. This included monitoring productivity, safety
and review processes. He was also responsible for liaising with the project team to set the scope and order plant,
materials and other resources.
Kedron Car Park and Stage 2 Upgrade, Kedron, Qld
State Emergency Service, $8m
Leading Hand
The project comprised the construction of a stormwater pipeline from the SES building at Kedron to the Kedron Brook
(creek) as well as the construction of staff car parks at the SES building and Kedron AFL Field. The scope included
flexible pavement placement, drainage and stormwater installation, gully pits, kerb channels, concrete works, in -situ
formwork and minor road works. An issue arose with the depth/ width of the pipeline trench. It contained unsuitable
material, creating a very limited work site. Shoring had to be employed to ensure works could continue on schedule. A
filtration system also had to be set up to dewater the site and allow water to safely enter back into the creek system.
As a Leading Hand on the project, Blase was responsible for overseeing project set-out, construction works, concreting,
levels and pipe and culvert placement as well as undertaking daily prestart talks and safety discussions. He also acted
as a Plant Operator, using a bobcatand roller on-site.
