BALL PEEN HAMMER
Description: A ball-peen hammer, also known as a machinist's
hammer, is a type of peening hammer used in metal working.
It is distinguished from a cross-peen hammer, diagonal-peen
hammer, point-peen hammer, or chisel-peen hammer by having
a hemispherical head. It is commonly used as a tool for metal
working.
Uses: Though the process of peening has become rarer in metal
fabrication, the ball-peen hammer remains useful for many
tasks, such as striking punches and chisels. The peening face is
useful for rounding off edges of metal pins and fasteners, such
as rivets. The ball face of the hammer can also be used to
make gaskets for mating surfaces. A suitable gasket material is
held over the surface where a corresponding gasket is desired,
and the operator will lightly tap around the edges of the mating
surface to perforate the gasket material.
CENTRE PUNCH
Description and Uses: A centre punch is used to mark the
centre of a point. It is usually used to mark the centre of a hole
when drilling holes. A drill has the tendency to "wander" if it
does not start in a recess. A centre punch forms a large enough
dimple to "guide" the tip of the drill. The tip of a centre punch
has an angle between 60 and 90 degrees. When drilling larger
holes, and the web of the drill is wider than the indentation
produced by a centre punch, the drilling of a pilot hole is usually
needed. An automatic centre punch operates without the need
for a hammer.
Chisel
Description: A long-bladed hand tool with a beveled cutting
edge and a handle which is struck with a hammer or mallet, used
to cut or shape wood, stone, or metal.
Uses: In order to cut into a material – wood or metal – a chisel
tool is forced into the material. The driving force may be done
manually, or may be applied using a hammer or mallet. In
industrial applications, a trip hammer or falling weight, or a
hydraulic ram can be used to force the chisel into the material to
be cut.
Woodworking
In woodworking, there is a wide range of woodworking chisels
used for specific purposes. There are large chisels that are used
to remove big sections of wood and small chisels that are used
for creating fine details on the wood. Normally, in
woodworking, a large chisel is used first and then a small chisel
is used to finish the fine details. Some examples of chisels
used in woodworking are carving chisels, framing chisels,
corner chisel, paring chisels, skew chisels, dovetail chisels,
mortise chisels, bevel edge chisels, butt chisels and slicks.
Metalworking
Chisels used in metal working can be divided into two main
categories, namely cold chisels and hot chisels. Made from
tempered steel, a cold chisel is used for cutting ‘cold’ metals, in
the sense that the chisel is not used in combination with forges
or heating torches. A cold chisel is used to remove waste metal
in situations where a smooth finish a hot chisel is used to cut
metal that has been heated in a forge to soften the metal.
SQUARE BIT TONG
Description and uses: Square bit tong is used for holding small
sizes of round or square iron. Square bit tong sometimes called
flat bills. It is a closed mouth tong.it is used in many black
smithy jobs. Thus, it is an important tool for a blacksmith.
FLATTER
Description and uses: These are small iron tools having a
square flat surface bottom specifically designed for providing
flat finishes to a metal job. Flatters have flat faces with sharp or
rounded edges and are positioned on the work piece and struck
with a sledge hammer or other hammer. The set hammer is most
often used for setting in shoulders, while the flatter is a good
finishing tool and should be used specifically to leave a good
finish on flat surfaces.
