In the Container world, there is a need to build observability around apps and backing services running in containers. The observability should allow to capture on demand low level metrics at a low overhead. The proposal is to use ebpf as the tracing technology to capture details at kernel & user level, and generate on demand flamegraphs, heat maps for applications & backing services. The Linux kernel has a built-in BPF JIT compiler, and an in-kernel verifier which is used to validate eBPF programs. This allows user defined instrumentation on a live kernel image that can never crash, hang or interfere with the kernel negatively. eBPF provides in-kernel implementation of storage maps such as histograms and hash-maps, which helps in efficient copy of summarized monitoring data from kernel to user space with low overhead.
These features make eBPF programs safe to run in production and allow admins and engineers to collect crucial data from systems for performance analysis and monitoring.

This session will start with an overview of each of these, their locations, their focus, etc. It will then provide examples and direction on how a Member can add their hardware to a board farm. It will also provide an overview of how a Member or employee can navigate/leverage/check out a board for experimentation and usage (this varies based upon which lab/board farm is being considered, so all will be reviewed) in each of the farm locations. BKK16-111 Tunables: The Future of Platform Optimization Selection in glibcLinaro
The GNU C library has a number of magic constants that were decided based on performance and resource data available when they were first introduced. Those constants may be suboptimal for some loads and may have even been rendered incorrect due to advances in other components or hardware. Further, there are a number of global configuration variables that were added over the years to work around the problems posed by such magic constants (the MMAP_THRESHOLD in malloc is one such example). These variables have ad hoc names and each have their own scheme of initialization and maintenance.
A tunables framework aims to provide a layer that manages such global configuration and provides a unified interface to programmers, system administrators, and integrators to tweak this configuration.
This talk describes the architecture of this layer and the interface it provides and also describes the potential roadmap for this feature in glibc.

In this session, Tim Bird will discuss the mainline status of several ARM SoCs used in mobile products. The average phone uses kernel software that is 3 years old, 20 versions behind mainline, and has 1 to 3 million lines of code out-of-tree. Tim will describe the “Device Mainlining” project of the Linux foundation CE Workgroup, which seeks to address this problem. Some of the activities of this project are:
* publishing tools for mainline analysis
* finding big areas where multiple vendors have code out of tree
* identifying institutional barriers to corporate developer mainlining, and addressing them through education, training, and collaboration
* working with upstream to address deficient sub-systems or needed maintainer assistance
It is hoped that discussion will ensue about ways to continue enhancing this work, to get more SoC code mainlined.

"Linux 4.x Tracing Tools: Using BPF Superpowers
The Linux 4.x series heralds a new era of Linux performance analysis, with the long-awaited integration of a programmable tracer: Enhanced BPF (eBPF). Formally the Berkeley Packet Filter, BPF has been enhanced in Linux to provide system tracing capabilities, and integrates with dynamic tracing (kprobes and uprobes) and static tracing (tracepoints and USDT). This has allowed dozens of new observability tools to be developed so far: for example, measuring latency distributions for file system I/O and run queue latency, printing details of storage device I/O and TCP retransmits, investigating blocked stack traces and memory leaks, and a whole lot more. These lead to performance wins large and small, especially when instrumenting areas that previously had zero visibility. Tracing superpowers have finally arrived.
In this talk I'll show you how to use BPF in the Linux 4.x series, and I'll summarize the different tools and front ends available, with a focus on iovisor bcc. bcc is an open source project to provide a Python front end for BPF, and comes with dozens of new observability tools (many of which I developed). These tools include new BPF versions of old classics, and many new tools, including: execsnoop, opensnoop, funccount, trace, biosnoop, bitesize, ext4slower, ext4dist, tcpconnect, tcpretrans, runqlat, offcputime, offwaketime, and many more. I'll also summarize use cases and some long-standing issues that can now be solved, and how we are using these capabilities at Netflix."

BPF is a sandboxed virtual machine that runs user-level defined programs in kernel context, and is part of many kernels. The Linux enhancements allow it to run custom programs on other events, including kernel- and user-level dynamic tracing (kprobes and uprobes), static tracing (tracepoints), and hardware events. This is finding uses for the generation of new performance analysis tools, network acceleration technologies, and security intrusion detection systems.
This talk will explain the BPF enhancements, then discuss the new performance observability tools that are in use and being created, especially from the BPF compiler collection (bcc) open source project. These tools provide new insights for file system and storage performance, CPU scheduler performance, TCP performance, and much more. This is a major turning point for Linux systems engineering, as custom advanced performance instrumentation can be used safely in production environments, powering a new generation of tools and visualizations.
Because these BPF enhancements are only in very recent Linux (such as Linux 4.9), most companies are not yet running new enough kernels to be exploring BPF yet. Linux 4.x Tracing: Performance Analysis with bcc/BPFBrendan Gregg
Talk about bcc/eBPF for SCALE15x (2017) by Brendan Gregg. "BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) has been enhanced in the Linux 4.x series and now powers a large collection of performance analysis and observability tools ready for you to use, included in the bcc (BPF Complier Collection) open source project. BPF nowadays can do system tracing, software defined networks, and kernel fast path: much more than just filtering packets! This talk will focus on the bcc/BPF tools for performance analysis, which make use of other built in Linux capabilities: dynamic tracing (kprobes and uprobes) and static tracing (tracepoints and USDT). There are now bcc tools for measuring latency distributions for file system I/O and run queue latency, printing details of storage device I/O and TCP retransmits, investigating blocked stack traces and memory leaks, and a whole lot more. These lead to performance wins large and small, especially when instrumenting areas that previously had zero visibility. Tracing superpowers have finally arrived, built in to Linux."

The SUSE way to check whether any change breaks normal distribution behavior is OpenQA. Using OpenQA we can automatically run tests that hard working QA people did manually in the old days. Modern RDMA based network interconnects provides incredibly rich functionality (RDMA, Atomics, OS-bypass, etc.) that enable low-latency and high-bandwidth communication services. The functionality is supported by a variety of interconnect technologies such as InfiniBand, RoCE, iWARP, Intel OPA, Cray¹s Aries/Gemini, and others. Over the last decade, the HPC community has developed variety user/kernel level protocols and libraries that enable a variety of high-performance applications over RDMA interconnects including MPI, SHMEM, UPC, etc. With the emerging availability HPC solutions based on ARM CPU architecture it is important to understand how ARM integrates with the RDMA hardware and HPC network software stack. Talk Desc: The Vanguard program looks to expand the potential technology choices for leadership-class High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms, not only for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) but for the Department of Energy (DOE) and wider HPC community. Specifically, there is a need to expand the supercomputing ecosystem by investing and developing emerging, yet-to-be-proven technologies and address both hardware and software challenges together, as well as to prove-out the viability of such novel platforms for production HPC workloads.
The first deployment of the Vanguard program will be Astra, a prototype Petascale Arm supercomputer to be sited at Sandia National Laboratories during 2018. This talk will focus on the arthictecural details of Astra and the significant investments being made towards the maturing the Arm software ecosystem. Furthermore, we will share initial performance results based on our pre-general availability testbed system and outline several planned research activities for the machine.
Bio: Andrew Younge is a R&D Computer Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories with the Scalable System Software group. His research interests include Cloud Computing, Virtualization, Distributed Systems, and energy efficient computing. Andrew has a Ph.D in Computer Science from Indiana University, where he was the Persistent Systems fellow and a member of the FutureGrid project, an NSF-funded experimental cyberinfrastructure test-bed. Over the years, Andrew has held visiting positions at the MITRE Corporation, the University of Southern California / Information Sciences Institute, and the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Bachelors and Masters of Science from the Computer Science Department at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 2008 and 2010, respectively.

While several out-of-tree attempts at implementing SVE support for QEMU existed, we took a fundamentally different approach to solving key challenges and therefore pursued a from-scratch QEMU SVE implementation in Linaro. Our strategic choice was driven by several factors. First as an ""upstream first"" organisation we were focused on a solution that would be readily accepted by the upstream project. This entailed doing our development in the open on the project mailing lists where early feedback and community consensus can be reached.

★ Session Summary ★
Devicetree has become the dominant hardware configuration language used when building embedded systems. Projects using Devicetree now include Linux, U-Boot, Android, FreeBSD, and Zephyr. However, it is notoriously difficult to write correct Devicetree data files. The dtc tools perform limited tests for valid data, and there there is not yet a way to add validity test for specific hardware descriptions. Neither is there a good way to document requirements for specific bindings. Work is underway to solve these problems. This session will present a proposal for adding Devicetree schema files to the Devicetree toolchain that can be used to both validate data and produce usable documentation.

Trusted Firmware M
In October 2017, Arm announced the vision of Platform Security Architecture (PSA) - a common framework to allow everyone in the IoT ecosystem to move forward with stronger, scalable security and greater confidence. There are three key stages to the Platform Security Architecture: Analysis, Architecture and Implementation which are described at https://developer.arm.com/products/architecture/platform-security-architecture.
_Trusted Firmware M, i.e. TF-M, is the Arm project to provide an open source reference implementation firmware that will conform to the PSA specification for M-Class devices. Early access to TF-M was released in December 2017 and it is being made public during Linaro Connect. The implementation should be considered a prototype until the PSA specifications reach release state and the code aligns._

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
