2019 Global University Pitch Competition Intro DeckKevin Rutter
Do you have a cool business idea for blockchain technology, but are disillusioned by crypto price depreciations, broken promises of forked architectures, hypocritical ideologies, and ICO scams? Cheer up! The dream of blockchain is still alive!!!
R3’s 2019 Global University Pitch Competition, now open and accepting submissions, is THE place for any student (team) globally to elevate their idea for blockchain technology to the next level. The winning team will receive $15,000 as well as the support and resources necessary to begin to BUIDL a sustainable business. No technical expertise or previous knowledge required – the competition is built to be accessible for all types of students.
Promising start-ups such as Elphi and Finteum have proven that student-driven companies often tend to think more disruptively with their business models. The progress of these start-ups has shown that R3’s guidance and office space, coupled with access to our extensive network of 100+ banks and 200+ partners, can be invaluable for students early in their blockchain journey.
We certainly see a divide between technological capabilities and business needs in the blockchain space, particularly for early stage ideas. Successful start-ups in the enterprise blockchain space are those that combine industry-specific knowledge and technical savvy to identify a business problem that fits the technology well. These initiatives leading the market have followed the timeless advice of Theodore Levitt: "People don't want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole."

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

One way to survive is to create “Bank as a Platform”, which, in this case, focuses on
addressing complexity in supply chain management.
Payment Banks
• Competing to be the main
operating account
• Cutting fees for cash
management & payment to
zero
• Bearing cost for uncertain
revenue
Financing Banks
• Consuming time and resources to
sell and process supply chain
lending
• Susceptible to Fraud
• Assuming collection risk and
consuming resources to perform
collection
• Unable to offer competitive rate
Buyers
• Handling a lot of documents
(PO, GR, Invoices) and
variations
• Consuming time and
resources in complex
document verification
processes
• Having big burden on
document retention
• Susceptible to errors, fraud
and leakages
Suppliers
• Waiting for long
payment cycle
• Spending a lot of time
chasing the payment
• Limiting access to
supply chain financing
Government
• Too many documents,
too complex to audit
• Consuming significant
time and resources
• Adding negative impact
to ease of doing business
& national
competitiveness
5. DV CONFIDENTIAL

Our first customer, SCG, has provided a strong testimony based on the initial results
shared in the public stating significant productivity improvement.
Key Highlights
• The solution was launched in August
2018.
• So far, only 275 suppliers were
onboarded.
• SCG has indicated that they achieved
substantial saving of 50% in time and
70% in cost reductions.
• The slow ramp-up was due to significant
variations of requirements.
• The solution has reached the maturity
that will enable us to scale.
• We are planning to bring up the total of
2,400 suppliers by the end of this year.
• In addition, we have already onboarded
San Siri (the largest developer) and
Minors (a leading Food & Beverage
company).
• The platform has processed more than
THB 1.5 Billion transactions.
7. DV CONFIDENTIAL
The remarkable results were achievable with the combination of applying blockchain
DLT and modern application design focusing on increasing labor productivity.
Design Principles
• User Focus – Workspaces based on
users’ roles & responsibilities (i.e.
Purchasing Manager, Account Payable
Officer, etc.)
• Modern Architecture – Dashboard
style customizable by users
• Simple and Intuitive – Breakdown to
simple tasks to facilitate faster
onboarding
Blockchain – Disruptive Technology
• Simpler Integration – DLT enables data to be
shared and processed simultaneously across
multiple blockchain nodes overcoming the
limitation of having to rely on complex and costly
point-to-point system integration.
• Global Scalability – Secured transactions can be
exchanged through the Internet making it highly
scalable.
• Ideal for Trade Transactions – Blockchain is ideal for
trade transactions where records need to be
audited for tax, fraud detection, etc.
• New Business Model Enablement –These include
different ways of facilitating cross-boarder trades,
foreign exchange (FX), cryptocurrency, etc.
8. DV CONFIDENTIAL
We are planning to further expand by building a network of leading banks, which will
offer comprehensive services and opportunities to create more innovative solutions.
Global Expansion – Bank Partnership
• Customer Reach – Banks in general
have very strong relationship in their
local markets, especially with large
corporation (buyers) and SME
(suppliers).
• Credibility – Banks normally have
higher credibility than Fintech. Having
banks as partners will make it easier
for customers to be onboard.
• Differentiated Solution – Banks can
provide comprehensive financial
services on top of B2P platform
creating a market differentiation.
• Innovation – Having cross-regional
banks as partners, will offer
opportunities to create more
innovative services to disrupt the
current business model such as using
crypto currency to facilitate Foreign
Exchange (FX), bank-to-bank
guarantees without using Letter of
