Birth trauma refers to damage to a newborn's tissues and organs, often from physical pressure during childbirth. It can cause long-term cognitive consequences if the brain or cranium are damaged. Birth trauma focuses on mechanical damage, while birth injuries can result from multiple factors during delivery, including hypoxia. Common birth injuries include subcutaneous hemorrhages, small subperiostal hemorrhages, and hemorrhages along cranial bone displacements. Causes of birth trauma include cephalo-pelvic disproportion, quick or delayed delivery, abnormal birth positions, and asynclitic birth.
