Q 1: What do you mean by scientific method?
Ans: The scientific method, in which biological problems are solved, is termed as
biological method. It comprises the steps a biologist adopts in order to solve a biological
problem.
Q 2: On which factor biodiversity depend?
Ans: Biodiversity depends on some environmental factors, such as:
Climate, Altitude, Soil, Presence of other species and many other things.
Biodiversity is not distributed evenly on Earth. It is richest in the tropics.
Q 3: What is the importance of biodiversity?
Ans:Biodiversity plays important role in making and maintaining ecosystem. It plays a
part in regulating the chemistry of our atmosphere and water supply. Biodiversity is
directly involved in recycling nutrients and providing fertile soil.
Q 4: Define Classification?
Ans: Classification is defined as “the arrangement of organisms into groups and
subgroups on the basis of their similarities and dissimilarities.
Q 5: Why classification is necessary?
Ans: some of the organisms are distinctly different from one another and share only few
common characteristic whereas other resemble more with each other and share only few
differences while some are even identical. Thus it is necessary that organisms are
classified and given a specific name.

Q 6: Write down any two aims of classification?
Ans: The main aims of classification are:
To determine the similarities and differences among organisms so that they can be
studied easily.
To find the evolutionary relationships among organisms.
Q 7: What is the difference between taxonomy and systematics?
Ans:Taxonomy: The branch of biology which deals with classification is called
taxonomy.
Systematics: The branch of biology which deals with classification and also traces the
evolutionary history of organisms is known as systematics.
Q 8: Differentiate between the terms “Extinct” and “endangered”?
Ans: Extinct: In an Ecosystem, a species is called Extinct when there is no doubt that the
last individual of the species has died in Ecosystem. For example Swamp deer ,
blackbuck and Indian wild ass.
Endangered: The species is called endangered when it is at risk of extinction in near
future. For example Indus Dolphin and Marco polo sheep.
Q 9: What are the contributions of Whittaker, Margulis and Schwartz in
Taxonomy?
Ans: Robert Whittaker introduced the five kingdom classification system.
Margulis and Schwartz modified the five kingdom classification system of Whittaker.
Q 10: What is Binomial Nomenclature and who introduced it?
Ans: Binomial Nomenclature is the Method of giving scientific names to living organisms.
Carlous Linnaeus introduced binomial nomenclature.
Q 11: Define Biodiversity?
Ans: The term Biodiversity has been derived from bio and diversity. The Biodiversity of
an Ecosystem can be defined as Varietywith in a Species and among
Species.Biodiversity is a measure of the variety of Organisms present in different
Ecosystems.
Q 12: What do you know about plant like protist?
Ans: Algae are unicellular, colonial or sometime simple multicellular. They resemble
plant cells with cell walls and chlorophyll in chloroplasts. Simple multicellular means that
they do not have multicellular sex organs and do not form embryos during life cycles.
Q 13: Give the characteristics of kingdom Monera?
Ans: According to kingdom Monera “organisms that lack definite nucleus and membrane
bounded organelles called prokaryotes are grouped together in kingdom Monera e. g.
Bacteria, Cyanobacteria or blue green algae.

Q 14: what are the main characteristics of fungi according to the five-kingdom
classification?
Ans: Kingdom Fungi includes eukaryotic, multicellular organisms for example
mushrooms.
Fungi are heterotrophic organisms that are absorptive in their nutritional mode.
Most fungi are decomposers. They live on organic matter, secrete digestive enzymes
and absorb small organic matter formed by the digestion by enzymes.
Q 15: Write two causes of deforestation?
Ans: Sometimes there is slow forest degradation and sometime sudden and catastrophic
clear-cutting for urban development.Deforestation can be the result of the deliberate
removal of forests for agriculture.
Q 16: Give some examples of endangered and extinct species?
Ans: Endangered species:
Indus Dolphin, Marco polo sheep, Houbara bustard, Astore Marchor and Snow leopard
etc.
Extinct species
:Indian one horned rhinoceros, Indian cheetah Swamp deer, Hangul etc.
Q 17: What is the difference between flora and fauna?
Ans: Fauna: Diversity of animals in any region is called fauna.
Flora: Diversity of plants in any region is called flora.
Q 18: What are prions and viroids?
Prions: Prions are composed of protein only and act as an infectious particle in plants.
Prions cause infectious disease in some plants.
Viroids: Viroids are composed of circular RNA only and act as an infectious particle,
cause disease in plants.
