S. alba leaves are obovate in shape with rounded or notched tips, and produce large white flowers between 2-4 cm long that open at night and are pollinated by bats. The flowers produce globular fruits up to 5 cm wide. It has pneumatophores that can reach 1 meter high. A. marina has characteristically long, pointed lance-shaped leaves 8-12 cm in length with dark green tops and pale undersides. The leaves are simple and arranged in opposite pairs on the stem. Obovate, with a width almost equal to the length, apex is often rounded or emarginated, but
sometimes the apex shows a small pointed end.
Flowers and Fruits
Flowers are rather large (in comparison to the other Kenyan mangrove species), ranging between
2 and 4 cm in length. S. alba can easily be recognized by the numerous white stamens. Flowers
open in the evening and are pollinated by bats. Flowers are usually already spent in the morning.
Fruits are globous, up to 5 cm in diameter.
