S. alba leaves are obovate in shape with rounded or notched tips, and produce large white flowers between 2-4 cm long that open at night and are pollinated by bats. The flowers produce globular fruits up to 5 cm wide. It has pneumatophores that can reach 1 meter high. A. marina has characteristically long, pointed lance-shaped leaves 8-12 cm in length with dark green tops and pale undersides. The leaves are simple and arranged in opposite pairs on the stem.
